Larryzaur Teaches Me How To Dark Knight In FFXIV – Krojak Reacts

Krojak reacts to “Basically, Dark Knight [FFXIV]” by Larryzaur, and the sheer amount of things I learned about Final Fantasy 14’s past is insane. This video is filled with tons of little tidbits of trivia from when FFXIV was but a little fledgling mmorpg. Oh, and Larryzaur is hilarious.

Final Fantasy XIV is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed and published by Square Enix. Directed and produced by Naoki Yoshida, it was released worldwide for Microsoft Windows and PlayStation 3 in August 2013, as a replacement for the failed 2010 version of the game, with support for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and macOS releasing later. Final Fantasy XIV takes place in the fictional land of Eorzea, five years after the events of the original 2010 release. At the conclusion of the original game, the primal dragon Bahamut escapes from its lunar prison to initiate the Seventh Umbral Calamity, an apocalyptic event which destroys much of Eorzea. Through the gods’ blessing, the player character escapes the devastation by time traveling five years into the future. As Eorzea recovers and rebuilds, the player must deal with the impending threat of invasion by the Garlean Empire from the north.

  1. Tanking were a lot closer to FFXI Online back in the day which makes perfectly sense. I liked it because it felt there was a lot to maintain in order to keep going but I wouldn't wish it back lol. It's felt like driving a manual rather than automatic.

  2. Before 5.0, you had to manage aggro. When 5.0 hit, protect went away, and tanks just held aggro natrually from just hitting things. A lot of jobs across the board lost abilities.

And yeah tanking stance always used to make your dmg output lower. Thats just tank stance 101 since like the history of ever. So in raids with multiple tanks, tank had tank stance, OT used the DPS stance. Your job as a tank was to hold aggro, not DPS.

Also each class used to have 'finishers' that went away in 5.0. Abilities that could only be used when the enemy was under like 20% HP or something. I miss the SAM one. but hey.

  3. I remember a time back in stormblood when you could do a big pull, pop up that skill that gives mp back when you get hit but it also increased blood gauge. We didn't have delirium as it was, so this was the only way to have quietus spam moments, and it felt damn glorious

  4. Actually, most new players do not understand why in 14, we hated moogles for so long (some still do).
In HW, in the Churning Mist area specifically, have you ever done most of the side quests there?!?!
Most new players will say no to this, especially now that the main story quests give out ridiculous amounts of XP and you have other better methods of gaining XP.
Well back when HW came out, we had to do these side quests for XP and these quests sucked!!!!
Moogles could be in one place, but you couldn't tell if they were above or below you as back then, as we didn't have the map or mini map indicator telling us whether the objective was above or below us for objectives. Also, the moogles would sometimes be in these sort of hidden areas and ya, we all wanted to kill all moogles at this time. Add the fact that you couldn't unlock flying until you passed the story section of this zone and did the specific side quests to and this meant you had to do these side quests on foot/ground mounts.
Even Yoshi-P acknowledged that the moogle quests were "troublesome" and that they wouldn't do quests like that again. :/

  5. Let's get this out of the way, DRK's best iteration was the one from HW. It was complete in every sense. Great MT and a lot of fun to play even if you were OT. Lots of tools for mitigation and attacks.
Back then tank stance lowered your damage output by 20%, but it increased you defense by 20% and allow for aggro generation with ever attack you made. (Today, this is now a tank level 1 trait, where you now have perma 20% damage reduction only, regardless of tank stance on or off)
If you had the tank stance off, only aggro generating attacks, such as the 3rd attack on your aggro combo or your aoe (I believe) and 1 or 2 more attacks generated hate.
So why would you take off tank stance??! Damage, of course.
The gap between a very good tank and your average joe tank was much much bigger back then due to this system.
The fact that for savage content the DPS checks were tight, especially in the 1st round/tier, A1-4, and you had the raid scene now being selective and paying attention to what players were "good tanks" vs "bad tanks". These fight were done with tanks in DPS Stances or no tank stance.

I know some people say it's better now, but if you ask veteran tanks of above average skill from back then, they will probably say the opposite, as it really did make you feel more of a badass tank back then since you actually had to manage aggro generation and a far more stricter CD management style as you were taking more damage outside tank stance so you had to have CDs up for not only tank busters but for other situations, as well.
Also, aggro generation during tank stance was not like today where it has an innate x10 aggro per attack. You really had to do multiple aggro combos to get a decent lead and then you could drop the stance to do dps and even then you had to squeeze in an aggro combo from time to time.

I will say this about today's style and that is the fact that it lets us tanks do what we really like doing and that is to focus on our DPS since we don't have to think about aggro, but there in lies the problem as tanks have basically become DPS classes over all.
Gunbreaker, imo, would not work in HW system way too much to juggle as it is. It was made for the new style for sure, as I still think it was meant to be a DPS job from the start, but then they decided to make it tank later on, again my opinion.
