Hope ya’ll are ready for a gush – a run down of all the BIG FEELS and character moments that made this patch/expansion of Shadowbringers absolutely insane in my humble estimation. PHEW. Finally feels like I got a bit of closure on this chapter… from what ya’ll have been saying, I should enjoy it while it lasts 😂

  2. If you rewatch the cutscene preceding the last Trial, have a look at Emet's face when Alisaie charge him and have her little monologue. Maybe it my bias but I swear he looks genuinely sad.

Like many things Hythlodaeus told us, Emet "act" like his duties and actions don't weight on him, but he is actually a compassionate individual. Another thing insinuated by Hythlodaeus was that Emet recognized our soul as one of his close friend. The pay off when he saw our "ancient" form and his denial saying that it is a trick of the light was very poignant.

I'm curious to see your reaction and listen to your judgement on the ending of patch 5.3.

  3. I think part of Emet's appeal as an antagonist is that, like you said, he is relatable, we could see ourselves doing similar things if we were in his position.

If you are a fan of Tactics and XII, I'd recommend running the Stormblood raid and looking into Bozja.
I'd also recommend running The Twinning, unlocked through the quest "By The Time You Hear This" in the Crystarium, and reading all the notes in the dungeon. Knowledge behind Omega from Stormblood would help but I don't think is fully needed.

Looking forward to your reactions to more of the plot, as the ride is not over yet. :3

  4. Awesome thoughts video! Loved watching you finish 5.0 and am super excited to see you handle the patches. (If you get a chance be sure to check out the raids as they have some great stories as well)

    Best wishes!

  5. The thing I love about FFXIV is that it's one of the few MMOs I've played that actually make you care about the characters. The Scions, city leaders, etc, are just as big a part of the story as you are. And unlike WoW where you're mostly just a Champion who doesn't really bond with the NPCs, you develop real relationships with the characters in FFXIV.

  6. I feel the dragons and the ascians have a similar view of time and of the humanoid races. For the people of the world a thousand years is practically an eternity but for Ascians and Dragons thats like last tuesday. To them, a hyur or elezens life pales in comparison.

  7. Now…. get ready for another Feelsbringers expository session post 5.3 ;-p I'm glad you guys enjoyed the story so much! Me too, and I always like to hear other people's take on it. I think your talk here was the verbal version of my mental narrative for like at least a solid week after playing… I just could not stop thinking about the narrative I had just experienced and what it meant and what were the nuances and themes… It's been a very long time since another piece of art has made me do so much reflection.

  8. Just so you know the reason most go and see Alisaie first is because shortly before she collapsed and went to the first the WoL promised not to leave her alone. So most tend to rush to her in order to keep that promise 🙂

  9. Not sure if u Caught this. But rewatch Thancreds Scene of him laying down after his fight. When he spills his guts. At the end, it's not voiced but you can see him mouth the lines 'I love you'

  10. I always viewed Thancred being tough on Mini because he knew she had an incredibly tough decision to make and he knew that it would be wrong for him to influence that decision. The impression I'd always gotten was that by the time we met them Thancred already loved little Minfilia like a daughter and did not want to lose her. He still wanted Minfilia back but not at the cost of Mini-Minfilia. But he felt he had no right to make that decision for her. As seen in his relief when she showed up again. It seemed Thancred always knew it was going to come down to this decision.

  11. Great video ^^
You will be surprised what you see should you replay the story, either with new game plus or with a new character
there are sooo many things that one will miss in the first playthrough ^^
Funnily enough, its always Thancred that gets the short straw, so I anticipated something bad happening to him
Btw. our Character talks one time before ^^ in the 1.0 Trailer he has one sentence

  12. its time to do the blue raid quests for heavensward and stormblood because those explain the shadowbringers lore focusing graha tia and how he got to the first in a later blue quest dungeon in shb !!

  13. I also think that since the beginning, in a corner of his heart, Emet wanted to lose, he never try to stop us from defeating the lightwardens and when we fail to control the light he seems honestly disappointed. He wanted us to prove him wrong, to prove ourselves worthy of their legacy and when we failed, he immediately decided to come back to his plan of rejoining because to him it's the final proof we will never be enough.

  14. Was definitely a highlight of the expansion that the other Scions got so much character development and spotlight time. Urianger's glow-up is one for the ages, and I'm so glad that he's more a part of the team now, rather than the 'quirky book guy who speaks with funny words'.

  15. This is based on speculation but i listened to the lina part in different languages (german, japanese and english) and by far the english version is the icing on the cake. I think the german version is more truthful to the japanese, textvise, but thats the problem with language. A one on one translation won't always work, so the english team made a more realistic monologue and the voice actress just nailed that line.

  16. Do the quest Akadaemia Anyder from an Npc in Eulmore to unlock the dungeon of the same name to learn more about the Amaurantian's creation magic.

Next recall Emet's word in the Amaurot dungeon: "The fabric of our star began to fray and the unchecked energies of creation begat malformed beasts. Just as prayer gives rise to primals, our dread made manifest our deepest fears…" then after you reach the second boss("doom" as Emit narrates it) he continues "The beast bellows, and gives birth to terror. A terror which, in turn, gives birth to new beasts. Its gaze turns skyward, and feiry rain falls from the heavens. Once the fear has taken root, it cannott be expunged. As if feeding upon the horror, the beast bloats… the shivers… then ruptures…" and again when approaching the final boss, "The star was fading. We saw we had to weave its laws anew…" "from the depths of dispair, the last harbinger arose…"

So what was the final days? Simply put it was the Ancient's creation magic running amuck. Their magic began to create everything which the people feared and in their fear more and more were created and these fell beasts fed on the dipair of the people and grew more powerful and more numerous.

So now that we understand what it was, we ask how this happened? Short answer is we do not know. Emet says the "fabric of our star began to fray" which in turn caused the magic to go our of control, but the first domino is unknown to us, what caused the fabric of the stsr to fray. I think perhaps it is similar to how on the source prior to Shadowbringers various characters spoke of fluctuations in the aether (we saw how Master Matoya's enchantment on her brooms failed due to these fluctuations). Now in the case of the source it is implied that perhaps the cause is Gra'ha attempting to summon us to the first as any summoning spell is said to draw considerable aether from the land (hence the empire's pretence for invasion, to stop the beast tribes from summoning their gods due to the devistation wrought onto the Burn where all the aether has been drained away due to numerous repeated summonings in the past). So who taught the beast tribes (and also the Allegans as you find out in the Warring Triad questline) how to summon in the first place? The Ascions, who are the Ascions? The Ancients, who had magic that could create anything they could imagine. What is a primal? Not a god but a recreation of a god or exhauted being (Lady Shiva, King Thorodin, and Bahamut) based on the idea for the being in the mind of the summoner (info via Hraesvelgr when talking to Ysale about Shiva). Put these facts together and what do you get? Summoning is the exact same thing as the Ancient's creation magic. Therefore I believe the final days were caused by the Ancients overusing their ability to create life thus draining to much aether from the Star, thus a dangerous fluctuation in the aether that caused the creation (summoming) magic to draw on fears rather than prayer/belief.

  17. I would love to hear Sophiekins do a reflection/review on Shadowbringers as she is so amazingly observant and has great insights she doesn't miss a thing. Can we have more Sophie 🙂 as you're both awesome together. Just to add as a 1.0 player who has played through the patch cycle as they were released over the years the G'raha Tia reveal to some of us was a surprise haha as we hadn't seen the crystal tower cutscenes in many years. To see the run through in such a condensed manner due to all content being out has been great to watch as I didn't do New Game+ I did it through both your reactions so thank you Tom and Sophie :). I keep saying it please look forward to patch 5.3 😀

  18. Personally, I was glad to chose Alphnaud first and then Alisae: when I saw the closing of Tesleen I was like "I'm going to kill something, I'm going to do something and it'll cause a lot of things to die, but HELL, I WANNA KILL SOMETHING!" – thankfully, afterwards, we are send to our first dungeon. I dont think I would have had the patience for political intrigue after that emotional gutting o.o

Playing Shadowbringers there wasnt a singly moment I thought of Emet-Selch being a friend, like the Scions. I didnt doubted that he was telling the truth and all – but you can lie just as well by omitting parts of the truth, just like he did. And I never really felt like he was telling the whole truth, pretty much like all Ascians, only the parts they want to you know, only the parts important to them. And, speaking about The Truth, its always a matter of perspetive and we getting fed the Ascian truth. I always felt it was only half the picture. Other than that, yes, he was a cool character and I felt so, so bad for him in Amarout 🙁

45:45 —- Uuuuuuhuhuhuuuuu, you, my good Sir, are asking the right questions XD And we all have to wait… only oneandahalf month now, to be precise…

  19. Thank you for sharing both you and Sofie's adventures through FFXIV with us. It's been a treat to watch you two experience all the emotions of the journey as we've all have. I look forward to your side journeys as we all congregate in the waiting room for Endwalker.
