Welcome to the 2nd entry of my “how to” series, in this series we will be covering EVERY single job Final Fantasy 14 has to offer and I will be personally challenging myself to learn all the jobs to the highest level and provide guides for you guys during my journey. So join me on my journey and together we shall learn them all to the highest level!
The video may not be as short as my previous guides but I can assure you I nail most if not every point I could think of when playing a PLD, I’ve mained the tank role for 8+ years since the start of ARR and have had plenty of tanking experience so I really wanted to make sure this was RIGHT. If you have any feedback or need any help with these guides then please do leave them in the comments below and I would be happy to reply.

A lot of this is my own research but I couldn’t of done it without the help of the resources provided in the Balance discord, so props to the brains over there.

Something that got past my reviewing stages (I've been up all night so was easy to miss I guess) is I mention intervention is "20% for the first 10 seconds" at 6:15 no idea why I said this but I meant 20% for the first 4 seconds… on top of that its worth mentioning that the buff from rampart and sentinel do not stack for the intervention, so using both isn't going to make it 40%.
For a more detailed breakdown of how to recover our Rotation and a quick mock up of Dungeon AoEing, check this video out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7EHbmr_Kb1o&t=288s&ab_channel=AzuriteRPG
Really good guide. You showed the complexity of the job and explained it really well. The rotation sounds like a mess when there is downtime so it's great that you showed a way to recover it.
I love paladin and learned a few new things from this video. Thank you for sharing! As a SCH healer main, I would add that tanks shouldn't be afraid to use stuns to help mitigate damage during trash mobs that are proving to be hard hitting/debuffers, particularly if you can use Shield bash and Low blow to take out two enemies for a few seconds. As WHM, it's less of an issue due to Holy.
Excellent! Keep these coming, love the vids!
These continue to be just excellent guides for EW, really loving the style of content.
amazing guide this is just what i needed!!
A tip to note, maybe you talk about this i am half way throught the guide , is you can use requiescat every wall to wall pull in dungeons and it will be up everytime. im currently pulling around 12kish on packs and since it adds some nice self sustain with the healing from holy shelltron and holy magic you are freeing the healer from having to heal you too much. Just a tips that i found
This is the one class/job i've mained for almost 20 years since 2004 between both WoW and FF14. Noot even the Boom Boom Pew Pew of the dps has made me fall in love with the other class as is playing a Paladin no matter the MMO. There is something about playing such a character, defensively and i do love it as a job in FF14. You feel a bit the pain when you level down in dungeons, yet such is every other job as well. But you feel it. I tend to use Requicast after i pop shields and then Holy Circles that way i'm shielded in AoE while i'm Holy Circling, single when its one target for the other spell.
So easy to digest, thank you for the excellent guide.
Just a quick question as i'm new to endgame ff, I reached 2.44GCD just through gear upgrades, around 575ILVL, does this suffice?
Hello, great clear guide, I'm very new to Paladin and tanking in general, may I ask where you came up with the idea to skip and lose one Atonement after the first full rotation? Was that something you decided upon yourself or something others have theory crafted and proven to be a dps increase? I only ask because with 2.41s GCD on ps4 it seems as though I'd only be delaying FoF for the duration of one GCD or less, and with atonement being one of our more hard hitting abilities, losing one atonement and overwriting the confiteor combo dot 4 seconds early with the melee dot, it seems hard to picture this as a dps gain but I'm far too inexperienced to know for sure, could you please respond and tell me whether or not you're 100% sure that losing that stack is a dps increase? Thank you in advance, and a well made clear guide so good job 🙂
My rotation looked nothing like this, but I will definitely give it ago. Thanks for another great video.
isn't it better to pop fight or flight before goring blade?
Best guide I've ever seen on pala! Earned my sub 😉
I like how comprehensively structured this video is, going from basic understanding of the job's various skills, to the intricacies of the damage rotation. Each section is well thought out, and easy to follow.
However, one major feature missing that–I think–would greatly improve this guide is a section with example uses of the Paladin's toolkits in group play. As it stands, the latter part of the video is focused only on damage dealing, which isn't really the job's main feature. Divine Veil is clunky, so when's some good opportunities to use it? Divine Intervention is great for off-tanking, but are there interesting tips and tricks you can do in specific situations? Cover is a super niche ability with very little practical use cases, so why not spur your viewer's creativity by providing an example? Should I ever spend Requiescat charges on Clemency, or is my sole focus as a Paladin simply damage output? The job offers so many more options that just mashing damage buttons.
Anywho, that's me nitpicking. Keep up the good work, and I look forward to more guides from you!
Idk why but i never thought to pop hallowed ground early in a dungeon for big trash pulls but that just makes a lot of sense for better dps/ quicker clears. Especially since i usually just hold it and almost never use it.
I really appreciate how well you presented the damage rotations with both visuals and talking us through it. Plus your voice is clear and smooth, making it all easy to digest.
Solid work!
What is the % of "block" ?
Very well made sir! This raid tier will be my first time doing Savage and I appreciate your help in equipping me to contribute to my static!
If you need a big aoe numbers, do : FoF > Circle of Scorn > Expiacion > Requiescat > 4 Holly Circle(2 intervene between) > Confiteor combo (after, all should be burned). Total Eclipse + Prominence is just mana filler, do not use that for big pulls as the main aoe rotation.
One question. How do I move around the oath guage? Its blocking my quests thingy
probably a dumb question sorry, but I still find myself struggling to recover the rotation when making a mistake, or from downtime. Using requiescat can help this?
Excellent guide! There is one minor correction though, and that is that Holy Circle is a DPS increase on as few as 2 targets rather than 3. Holy Circle is a total of 600 potency on 2 targets as opposed to 540 on Holy Spirit (unless I'm missing something.)
pld rotation looks actually hard not gonna lie ive played this class wrong for so long oof
I am a greedy tank so my oath gauge is used exclusively for sheltron.
As a player who is coming back after a little break. This was an awesome video! Thank you for making it <3
Overall, great guide! One thing I’d like to note for large pulls: I’ve found it better to use Req>Holy Circle spam first, because you take more damage at the beginning of the pull and the self-heals help with the extra mobs and give the healer more leeway to do offensives.
Great stuff! I do have a couple of suggestions.
1) You mentioned that Clemency “benefits” from Req. You might want to note that it does not get an increase in the potency, especially since it did in previous expacs. Just the instant cast effect.
2) A couple of things regarding popping Divine Veil. You mentioned, correctly, that you can pop it with Holy Spirit. However the way you said it implied you needed to use a Req’d Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit heals you whether you’re in Req or not, so it’s not necessary to be in req. You may also want to mention that Holy Circle also pops it. In dungeon trash packs, it’s handy to use veil and pop it yourself if the DPS/healer eats an AoE. Almost all trash wipes I see are from the healer getting behind when they have to heal someone other than the tank, and tossing that heal/shield out can often provide the protection necessary to ensure the healer doesn’t need to split their attention.
3) You should definitely consider leading with the Req combo in big trash pulls. On six targets, as an example, the Req combo does double the potency per GCD as the FoF Total Eclipse/Prominence combo. A not inconsequential portion of that damage is the DoT that gets applied to all the targets by Blade of Valor. If you wait until FoF is done before using the Req combo, a lot of times the trash will be dead before that DoT gets applied (ie. 9th GCD vs 20th). This can definitely end up screwing up the timing of your buffs when it comes to the single target bosses, but delaying FoF so that you can realign it during the boss is definitely a net positive in over all potency if you get to make sure you’re potency on the trash mobs is optimized.
In addition, when dealing with dungeons and trash mobs, unReq’d HC spam is only 5 potency less per target, on average, to unbuffed TE/P and only ~40ish less that FoF’d TE/P. In exchange, you get a 400 potency heal, every GCD. This can be a pretty noticeable amount of extra healing. Swapping to unReq’d HC can definitely ease the burden on a healer who might be struggling for whatever reason. Or, if you’re coordinating with your healer in VoiceChat or something, it could let them continue to DPS while you take a much milder loss to DPS than them needing to cast a GCD heal.
All of this is optimization on casual content though, so that that with a grain of salt.
5) I’d recommend putting both Expiacion and Circle of Scorn on the same weave in the opener on single target, and just in general. Now that they’re both 30s CDs, you can just muscle memory them together. And if you’re doing the 61s rotation, as you’re suggesting, you’ll end up using them both at the same time in your rotation each time, which enhances the muscle memory nature of it. This helped me a bit, since the change in CoS’s CD screwed up some of my muscle memory and realigning them together made it easier for me to adjust.
Why no tenacity? Am fairly new to FFXIV. I keep going for Tenacity in PLD.
Genuine question. Can you guys really play endgame content with this camera setup?
Best teacher for ffxiv thank you so much for the help
Great guide, very concise and easy to digest. Also that 5Head blur at 18:11 for spoilers was a pretty cool touch 🙂.
A quick little trick that can help on tight deeps checks: Requiescat's buff lasts 30secs, but the skill itself is melee-only. Meanwhile, Holy Spirit and the entire Confiteor combo is 25y ranged, while lasting 12secs or something (and also, the entire post-Confiteor Blade combo doesn't need the Requiescat buff to cast, so as long as you cast Confiteor during the buff, you're golden).
So, if you know there's a ranged-probable phase sometime in the fight, you can activate Requiescat during a oGCD lull to set the buff up (typically during the FoF window) and when you're forced in ranged, you got 12 seconds where you can do your Holy Light -> Confiteor combo and lessen or outright negate the range phase damage loss.
It's not a "spur of the moment" thing, but it can help when you're getting the hang of the fight and want to push the extra sliver of dps to beat enrage or just finish before an annoying mechanic starts.
Tenacity might be preferred to DH if you're planning on getting all tanks to 90 and don't want to maintain multiple gear sets. The DPS difference is small enough that it won't make or break an encounter in most cases.
Started playing few days ago, pld atm am i oke with the af armors until im avove lv 50? Im 48 atm free trial
Uh I'm a bit confused on double goring combos when what do you mean when you say that you gotta pop it halfway through the GCD and also how do I get both off because every time it's a bit wonky is it because I'm doing the 3rd atonement and that's cutting of the seconds or is there a certain time I'm suppose to be in between Riot blades load I should be going for it? Because sometimes I got blue parses and goring blades perfectly time other then a very small few others it's a noticeable drop.
Thank you for your time wonderful vid!
hey, im beginner Paladin 🙂 how do i know if i have the Skillspeed threshold? i have 780 atm how much is that in seconds?
the thing i'm mostly struggling with right now is how requeiscat is changed.
now it's just 5 charges (as before) but on an 30 second timer instead of being much shorter (think 12 in shadowbringers?)
This is nice in a sense, but i'm having trouble relearning that specific part.
also the ignoring an atonement stack really ircks me, feels to me if you don't use all your things, it's bad job design, still love the job, just gotta drill it into my muscle memory again.
also double weaving while also weaving into defensive CDs makes it a lot more difficult, that's why I kinda despise the dummy trial (that Yoshi-P claims you can handle that trial) but you'll always have to weave in different CDs depending on encounter concidering you got macro delay (fuck macro delay, i use that for either Shirk or Intervention for the 2nd in the party list)
or you gotta take an tankbuster and gotta double weave 2 defensive CDs in.
i'll get back up there, just kinda having an hard time relearning it, the 8 GCD of complete free movement is godlike though.
Thank you for the excellent guide! What is your glamour please for your Paladin? It looks great
