  1. I believe that many people relate cataclysmic, apocalyptic and prophetic events as the only possible elements for a good fantasy story. This is not only to underestimate what storytelling really is, but to limit the elements that make up a good story. Excellent fantasy fiction books released over the years are there to prove that fighting gods, preventing the end of the universe, descending into hell and facing demons or world-eaters isn't the only way to tell a good fantasy story, in fact, sometimes it's even the most predictable way. Good examples of fantastic narratives that don't necessarily flirt with this type of story are books like "The Name of the Wind" and "The Gentleman Bastard Series". Final Fantasy has always been a very good franchise at telling us good stories. To expect that, in order to be successful, an expansion needs to have a story along the lines of ShB and EW is both to see fantasy fiction in a limited way and to underestimate the ability of the minds behind FFXIV's creative process.

  2. I know to temper my expectations on Dawntrail. Everyone is saying so becau as it is a new arc of a story. But having witness what CBU3 did with FF16, I have no doubt that they can make a compelling story that can grip us from the getgo. With such pedigree under their belt, it's hard not to have high expectations.

  3. The game needs a story ARC skip option, expecting new players to join and having to go through 2.0 all the way to 7.0 is a bit much, even though the quality is there, not the best practice to grow the next generation player base

  4. What's funny to me is these journalists are somehow completely oblivious to the fact that FFXIV has been using this "stagnating formula" to grow the game for over 10 years, long before COVID and the WoW refugee crisis happened. It's like the 6+ years of growth prior to Shadowbringers didn't exist. Granted, ShB was an extra boost of growth, but it was doing just fine before that too.

  5. I think everything is coming to a head with Dawntrail.

The story was kind of finite in Endwalker, culminating 10 years of story and finishing the Hydaelyn-Zodiark arc. In many ways, Endwalker felt like Wrath of the Lich King. I had a ton of friends quit after Wrath because the story felt like the culmination of Warcraft series, and us finally defeating the Lich King. Cata's story kind of sucked and many of my friends dropped off. So I think the story NEEDS to hook people and get them invested again, and I'm worried we might have another ARR situation where they have to introduce many new characters and setup many facets of a story, which may not sit well with people and cause them to dip. It's also going to come back down to earth, versus traveling the cosmos to stop the final days. The post patch story was already kind of mid for a lot of people and caused them to dip already.

Endwalker sucked in terms of content, let's not sugarcoat it lol. Doing roulettes to get tomes, to get your epic relic? lol. Variant dungeon rewards? lol. Island Sanctuary? lol. Post patch story? Mid. So I think all this is leading to people wondering if they will deliver on content in the next expansion or are we going to get another round of Endwalker? It has turned from we expect to get something to
now wondering if we are going to get it, and if we don't, well…I can see people leaving in droves.

And lastly, while I think a lot of us want content back that we didn't get in Endwalker. A lot of us don't want to the same old shit that we've gotten every expansion. We do want them to try new stuff, but we want it to be worth our time. Variant dungeons COULD be good, if they make the rewards worth it. While a lot of people don't want another copy/paste of deep dungeons, blue mage, bozja, etc.

  6. DT is SE last chance, if they want money, fix the account registration, payment processor and regions.
In the long run, having EW relic with just tomestone is good. If you just play FFXIV in Dawntrails, you will be swamped if you want to do Eureka, Bozja, Dawntrail's one. Grind (ARR), relax (HW), grind (StB), grind (ShB), relax (EW), grind(DT)

Another important things is, I already run out of 800 glam slot. Can we just rebuy stuff we obtained for 1000 gil. or just can use anything ever obtained.

  7. I have a lot of gripes that have been consistent since 2.0….however these dramatic hyperbolic "discussions" are so played out. The audience knows their point… it's attention. I've been around 10+ years. These videos come and go… The actual issues with the game are still here 😂

I will die on the hill that is opinion of the relics have always been and will always be utterly and entirely worthless. You dont need them for anything. There's no objective usefulness for them. They're pointless if you can do the hardest content without them. The fact that they release the last part of the weapon and/or gear AFTER the last actual content patch is just weird to me. The only reason this even bothers me is because a lot of players are really just hung up on there being no Eureka or Zadnor this time around. Thinking its the problem with EW. It's not. The problem with EW is the patch cycle. People are bored af. Another pointless relic area wouldn't have changed that in EW because its just busy work. That would have been stretched to its limits due to longer times between patches. Ive always thought relics were dumb in this game because they never make me feel like a badass. No matter how much work I put into it. If my crafted gear can get me to win, then whats the point? It would have just been more obvious to everyone else if they had done like before because they would have still run out of content.

  8. island sanctuary's main problem was how you couldn't gather on your friends island. really doing anything with your friends in the sanctuary would have been a godsend.

  9. "last chance" talks are always funny to me, games always change and that means some people will take it well and some won't. The people who won't maybe will leave, but that doesn't mean the game will die or fail, there will be always new audience they can reach, that's just the natural cycle of things.

  10. I would say that what the game really needs in terms of change in content itself (as the systems like glamour have their own issues) is the open world.
The open world portion of the game has been in the same state since ARR.
It feels too static and the maps are just a stage for msq and side quests.

There are a few FATE chains in ShB and I think in Endwalker. I have loved those as they make the world feel alive / a sense of things happening. But there are only a few of those chains. Most FATEs are static and none of the FATEs have any impact on the map itself. Either the FATE is up or not. That is it.

The world feels most times deserted by players as almost all are in towns / instances.
Where is the MMO presense in the exploration maps, I would ask from the devs.

Now I love the game a lot.
The story and the instances are great content. Some maps look absolutely stunning + the music.
But to me this side of the game needs some serious improvement to make the world feel more exciting to be in.
The world in my opinion needs
    * challenges to explore,
    * ways to spawn tough hunt marks dedicated to you or your party (that is not tied to the large hunt trains that the community is now doing). A bit more effort to the hunt system basically.
    * Time or interaction based secret places.
    * NPC's that react to the state of FATEs.
    * Rewards that you find in the map or from npc's based on what you have done. Not just that you did the required amount of FATEs.
Any of these improvements would help.
I do not need all of these. Just something to make reasons for players to roam around after the story, a sense of discovery and adventure.
And to give players reasons to meet each other and party up in such areas or just ask help.

  11. The relic direction is absolutely an issue because it isn't just a casual weapon, but the best one at the end of the game. It should be somewhat challenging to get, especially since it makes the tome weapons obsolete in most cases. Tome weapons are currency based already, it's too monotone

  12. Last chance to evolve? Probably not. We don't even know what story they want to tell, yet. We're less than 2 months from Dawntrail's launch, and I know more about the War Within's storyline, and I don't even play WoW anymore.😅

I know the title is kinda click-baity, but it's still a fun discussion. If you put ARR and EW side by side, you'd never believe they are from the same game. They have vastly different design philosophies, story structures, Etc. I can't imagine what these devs could do with a blank canvas in front of them.

  13. Nah, Endwalker's relic system is still super lame and boring. And Island Sanctuary is mostly relegated to 'forget it' for me without the 'set it', it's just way too passive and uninvolved. When you're not even leaving the base of the island to actually go get anything after a certain point, what's the point of having the rest of the island at all? It's a microcosm of the game's overworld being underutilized, it's actually kind of funny.

I am hopeful for Dawntrail, and I don't think it's necessarily going to be 'make or break' for the playerbase as a whole, but Endwalker had me take the longest breaks out of every expansion so far, I hope that trend doesn't continue.

  14. There is a difference between laziness and being spread so thin that things start slipping through the cracks. But it definitely can be perceived as laziness if you aren’t getting the full picture of the situation.

  15. There's actually a problem I've seen with more casual story only players where they're actually convinced Endwalker was the last major story expansion, because it ended so finally. Even seen some say they're officially done after Endwalker, because they were satisfied with the ending.
I don't know about Last Chance, but they do have to basically restart the whole overall story, and convince less commited players to keep playing after a major ending. That might not be easy to do.

  16. Heavensward: that was amazing. I can't imagine the game getting any better than that.

Shadowbringers: that was amazing. I can't imagine the game getting any better than that.

Endwalker: that was amazing. I can't imagine the game getting any better than that.

And yet . . . Yoshi P and team still keep the hits comin.

Or they could increase the max item level sync so that you can get even stronger gear to make it even easier. Probably do both increase the gear level that drops and then massively increase the max gear level so you can easily come back and farm for glamour.

  18. Title was click bait… A lot of people are so invested, and they know a great story is going to be fleshed out. The only way it will go down is if they change the game too much.

  19. My honest prediction for Dawntrail, It will help us play hooky, while looming a crazy story above our heads like the Gyshal green because we are the fat chocobo…

  20. I uninstalled FFXIV, haven't played it in a long time and needed the disk space… wasn't as interested after Shadowbringers (excellent) and playing as a Machinist (only class combat style I enjoyed) was thankless, always bottom tier no matter how well you performed

  21. Last chance to evolve what? Like the game hasn't been wildly successful for a decade while managing to grow in one of the hardest to grow genres in the industry.

  22. I think Dawntrail is FF14s last chance to dominate the genre and curve out a bigger audience. This expansion is a golden opportunity to innovative on the game and take some risks.

However, if Dawntrail is safe and mediocre, the game isn't going to die. It's just not going to help the game grow. But the game will always have its audience of hard-core raiders, part-time story/social players, and casuals.

  23. I think it's more likely that the game will have a bit of a recession on this expansion. I don't think we're going to see any systems improvements after the graphics update. What the game really needs to modernize, though, is seamless zone transition in Eorzea with flight. It needs THE Eorzea expansion that gives depth and replayability to the open world.

  24. To be honest, as a player that have been playing since ARR, I have no interest in Dawntrail at all. Haven't played for over half a year now. The story I wanted to see the end of is over, the game is getting more and more formulaic and streamlined, it just doesn't feel all that interesting to play anymore. Judging from Endwalker, it seems they're putting focus on more solo play and short term activities. And I just can't see the point of paying for a month and playing for maybe 4-6 hours and be done with everything in the patch. Endwalker severely lacked any longterm goals or activities. And no, island sancturary doesn't count, the only reason for that taking time is because it's locked behind timers 😑

  26. Last chance? Meh and who exactly can contest with FFXIV? WoW? Definitely not. SWtoR? Dead for a very long time. Guild Wars 2? Nope.

FFXIV is not perfect, but definitely the best there is. If is to be dethroned, worthy contender would need to show up.

  28. I don't think the story will be that good since it's the beginning of a new story arc and they undoubtedly have to establish a lot of new lore before going hard. In fact I'll go one step farther and say that The War Within (WoW expansion) will probably have a better story than Dawntrails since it's their turn to unravel years of lore building. That being said I don't care that much how good the story is at this point, I want to see that they can still make engaging group content that isn't raids, because Endwalker wasn't it.
