He’s correct. The journey is the goal for this game. Content, unlike WOW, stays relevant so it’s encouraged to take your time and soak it all in. Glad he’s decided to ease up on the dirty dialogue skipper routine LOL.
Just in case you didnt know. Misshapen Chair has some very fun story recaps for your brother or you as well after you have done an xpac.
Best thing about starting XIV at this point in its life is that you really don’t need to rush to the finish line.
Just take your time and enjoy the ride.
A year is more than enough time to get through the 10 year story ark and most of the major side content before Dawntrail drops next summer 👍
I also recommend trying out BLU, it’s a fun side job you can do on the side and use it to solo a good chunk of stuff with it and challange yourself lol.
Little bro out there making the rookie mistake of assuming that lore is just as irrelevant in XIV as it is in most other MMOs. But he'll learn. He'll learn.
Also, YoshiP hates FOMO, and the game design reflects that. There is no truly missable content in XIV. Aside from seasonal events and special crossovers like the FFXV and Yokai Watch events, all content in the game is permanently in the game. It's plenty easy to get caught up with gear, even going at your own pace, since endgame gearing isn't about grinding for a specific drop off a specific boss once per week. You start earning endgame gear currency – Tomestones of Poetics – after you finish 2.0, and can use them to buy the best gear from all older expansions as you reach the end of each expansion. It's super easy to farm Poetics, and the gear purchased with them will last until at least the third dungeon of the following expansion.
hey psybear if you can talk with Kyle and grate from grinding gear there from wow also there starting end walker see if you can get there view of the game with you fresh from the start. glade to see other wow player's playing this. Have fun. i'll glade to see you future videos of this game.
The HUD bit is definitely not very well explained (at all) – a few useful ones here:
-You can select (leftClick) an element and then RightClick it and the name of that bit turns grey-blue: disabled / white: enabled
-Your class specific HUD: apart from moving and resizing, you can get a Simpleview option in the cogwheel settings button (after u select it) if its too distracting
-Raider alert : 1) Your targeted enemy entity’s info in Target Info, that can be split up and individually resized (select, Cogwheel Settings Button/ “UI Element Settings”). You know your foe’s name and HP%, but you want to be alert of what move they might be casting so you might want to put TargetInfo:Progress Bar to like 200% (recommended);
And in the same mind 2) Your own buff / debuffs bars can also be split up and sized separately – you want to take note of what debuffs you’re receiving from a raid boss? That’s on Status Info: Enfeeblements
🎉
Heads up, Psy! Your spiritbond is at 100% on some of your gear. The green/white dots next to your inventory grid represent your gear slots (click them to open your character page). When the dots turn white, the corresponding slot is at 100% and you can right-click to Extract Materia* from them.
Materia works like gems in WoW, bonus stats you can slot into sockets on some gear. It's mainly an endgame thing for min/maxing, but it's also free gil if you extract and sell the materia at any level. To meld the materia into your gear, you'll need to a) be a crafter of appropriate level, b) Request Meld from a crafter of appropriate level, c) pay a Materia Melder vendor npc.
*Not to be confused with Retrieve Materia which will pull melded materia out of your slots.
In FFXIV there's red dps, blue dps (tank) and green dps (healer). I honestly find healing an absolute doddle. Not like other MMOs I've played.
Side quest pro tip: if the quest prompt screen has a picture on it, it's a lore quest with cutscenes.
inspirational
I recommend watching Zepla's guide to the Glamour System is really good. She also has other ffxiv guides i highly recommend for sprouts.
Glamour Guide: https://youtu.be/QQxIuKtfrAk
got to the HUD discussion, Ill throw in that at some point, just go through the options menu. Like ALLLL OF IT. Theres a lot you can customize to your liking. Mainly The Character config menu. System has a few thing like controls, themes worth looking at, but definitely Character config. DIG IN DEEP.
I wish they didn't get rid of abilities as new expansion comes out but instead upgrade abilities as you leveled up from 50 so you maintained 32+ abilities throughout the rest of the game.
Ultimates aren't really endgame because you can do a bunch of them before you beat the story, same goes with savage and extreme raids.
Endgame in FFXIV is really whatever you want to do but its mostly getting dope glams and housing.
The glamour quest is near vesper bay in western thanalan. All quests that unlock things have blue backgrounds and plus markers.
The best way to glam is to use the glamour dresser because you can cave an outfit and apply it at any rest zone.
Understanding the map gets easier if you use the teleport menu
Use the teleport action to bring it up
Honestly, as long as you pay attention to the cutscenes you’ll be fine for ARR.
You guys should TOTALLY prog Coils of Bahamut together.
The thumbnail is so disgustingly cute, I love it
Honestly, it’s okay. You don’t appreciate ARR until much later. I certainly skimmed a lot of the early stuff until the very final patch quest. It wasn’t until game+ came along that I went back for a deep dive.
glad youre enjoying the game! brings a smile to my face
If you prefer a bit of complexity in your rotations then you are on the wrong job lol, summoner is about as basic as it gets. It's definitely fun if you love the aesthetic and you should go for it if you like it but there is basically no depth to it. Your bro is on the right path though if he likes complexity in a job, monk ends up having the fastest GCD of the melee and the combo is a lot less straightforward than just 1,2,3, combo.
12:49 — Thats "Palace of the Dead" – Kugane Tower is in Stormblood, and its a jumping puzzle (and the local inn ^.^).
17:45 — You turn the boss away from the group because many bosses have a frontal cleave, even in ARR. And even if not, its a good way to practice 😉 Also, many melees have positionals (monk!), so rotate the boss on them and they'll hire a hitman on you 😛
18:30 — In normal content, tank has indeed "just" to stay alive. In harder fights, the tanks have to preposition the boss, have to do swaps between them, have to do certain mechanics the others wouldnt survive, and all the while keep their rotation rolling while having their mitigation up (or rather up at the time they need it). Its a mixture of planning in advance and very reactionary. Some tanks are more forgiving (like Warrior) than others (Dark Knight).
31:17 — Yeah, true… thats a bummer. You learn it, I guess, if you play around with the system menu… otherwise you have to ask youtube… or other players. The game teaches a lot, there are many tutorials, but not about this.
34:58 — The "rule" with quests is: do MSQ and all the blue unlock quests (unless they are for other jobs, best to focus on one or two at the beginning – dont worry, MSQ gives enough XP for two jobs). Blue unlock quests (the blue and gold questmark with a big plus + sign in it), are mostly dungeons but also the hair dresser and of course the glam system. Its always worth your time doing them. Also, check normal side quests for certain rewards like useful gear and emotes: every main city has a side quest, where a special dance is your reward.
41:40 — Dont put Ultimates on a pedestal 😀 Yes, they are hard fights but no, your dmg is second: playing the mechanics correctly is especially important for Ultimates. Yes, you can cheese a bit with extra dmg but even grey parsers can beat an Ultimate. Dmg is important, dont get me wrong, but unless you're a speed runner, if you do a decent job at it its enough. Also, from what I've heard, Ultimates arent the most difficult content where mechanics are concerned, that is Savage. The challenge of Ultimates and what makes them hard is that these fights take around 20 minutes or more with several phases (savage raid bosses take "only" around 10 minutes) – and if you wipe, you have to start at the very beginning 😀
Really, the game would be better off dropping a giant sign saying "THERE IS NO ENDGAME" at the very beginning. Sure, the newest raid tiers are the hardest and obviously the most active, given that they're part of the gearing loop, but 50/60/70/80 content is still fun and doable (and part of the journey). Hell, we only have 1 lvl90 ultimate, everything else is "not endgame".
Also, about the fear of missing out, as many call it: there is absolutely no need to rush. Speaking of personal experience, I did every raid, alliance raid, trial chain, leveled up every class to 70 to get all of the individual stories, did basically everything except Saucer and Treasure Maps, and I finished Endwalker in less than a year (I started around october last year). So yeah, no need to rush: you'll get to Dawntrail before it drops. And even if you don't, streaming it would be hell considering you'd face 20 minutes queues to get in due to server overload.
Video: a brother interviews his younger brother.

Perfection.
You guys will really enjoy this game if you take your time and realize it's deeper and much more than it initially presents. If you guys are also looking for more complexity to your gcd and ogcd maybe ninja and blm have a bit more of that in comparison to smn and mnk. Even rdm has really unique styles of gameplay in contrast to many other mmo jobs. But like you guys are experiencing you can just pick the classes up as you progress and try them out and see what you like. All the classes are super fun and really unique and also have great stories with them as you level. Have fun!!!
You know since he's your little brother, as punishment 10 gift subs when you hit 30 and another 10 when you hit 50.
Also in retrospect tell you bro this. If he goes to an inn, next to the bed (where you can log out and get bonus rested xp) is a book called the Unending Journey. He can replay all the content he's missed up to the current MSQ he's on. Its actually pretty good recap system, also there's new game+ that unlocks around Storm Blood that if he wants to play the events again.
There's replay systems in place if he doesnt want to watch a video.
This was so amazing and wholesome to watch and listen to.. I really enjoyed it 🙂 thank you Psybear!
12:42 Well akshually: "Kugane Tower" would be a jumping puzzle. You probably meant Palace of the Dead 200 Floor Roguelike (Heaven on High 100 floors; Eureka Orthos 100 floors).
19:13 Your bro might want to check out the Glamour Dresser at an inn. There you can store your cosmetic Lv. 1 items and then apply them to other gear. Buy or craft Glamour Prisms while you're at it. It is much clunkier than WoW's Appearance collection, but will be very helpful for the glam enthusiasts.
21:53 Who told you about our Sprout Betting Pools?! 😱
31:40 RE: Hotbar Enable. System > Character Configuration > (5) Hotbar Settings: Display. In here you can enable and choose layouts of each hotbar. The Sharing tab will allow you to set persistent hotbars so when you switch jobs some bars will stay (like mount, minions, emotes; what have you etc)
33:05 Sidequests are largely there for flavor. There are certain quest chains that payoff more than others but are largely hidden gems for you to find. There are some like that at the end of each expansion that are highly recommended FYI.
He's in for a shock later on if he thinks monk's too slow. Low level monk is janky, but 90 monk has a lot going on
The slower pace of battle in early levels is the result of two things. First, the early levels are generally treated as the 'training wheels' for the game. I don't think it would be an exaggeration to say those training wheels don't really come off until you finish the first level 50 quests and start post-ARR and even then there's always new things to learn. The other thing is that every time a new expansion is released (or a job gets reworked) they change up some of the abilities, pruning some old abilities to make room for new ones. There are definitely fewer abilities on the road 1-50 than there were back in ARR itself from pruning alone. In some cases, those abilities may still be in the game, they just get rolled up into passive traits. To be clear, most jobs feel MUCH busier as you learn the oGCD abilities and start weaving them in between your GCD moves. Busier than low level ARR anyway.
more brother content 😳good vid! 😄
i cant wait to see him in shb…and his brother… arm in arm crying 😀
Me and my friend also playing catgirls he tried every race, but he changed back to a catgirl it is the supreme race😂
