I don’t know what a final fantasy is….

Final Fantasy 14 or FFXIV is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed and published by Square Enix. Directed and produced by Naoki Yoshida, it was released worldwide for Windows and PlayStation 3 in August 2013, as a replacement for the failed 2010 version of the game, with support for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and macOS releasing later. Final Fantasy XIV takes place in the fictional land of Eorzea, five years after the events of the original 2010 release. At the conclusion of the original game, the primal dragon Bahamut escapes from its lunar prison to initiate the Seventh Umbral Calamity, an apocalyptic event which destroys much of Eorzea. Through the gods’ blessing, the player character escapes the devastation by time traveling five years into the future. As Eorzea recovers and rebuilds, the player must deal with the impending threat of invasion by the Garlean Empire from the north.

The original Final Fantasy XIV, released in September 2010, was a commercial and critical failure. In response, then-Square Enix President Yoichi Wada announced that a new team, led by Yoshida, would take over and attempt to fix the issues with it. This team was responsible for generating content for the original version as well as developing a brand new game which would address all of the previous release’s criticisms. This new game, initially dubbed “Version 2.0”, features a new game engine, improved server infrastructure, and revamped gameplay, interface, and story. The original version shut down in November 2012 and was followed by an alpha test for Version 2.0.

The game released to largely positive reception; critics praised the game for its solid mechanics and progression, and they commended Yoshida for turning the project around. After a poor 2013 fiscal year, Square Enix executives attributed the company’s 2014 return to profitability in part to the game’s strong sales and subscriber base, reaching a total of over 24 million registered players by October 2021, also becoming the most profitable Final Fantasy game to date. The game has had a number of post-release updates produced for it, including four major expansion packs: Heavensward (2015), Stormblood (2017), Shadowbringers (2019), and Endwalker (2021).

  1. Stormblood is actually when they start doing something a bit interesting with the Savage Raids, during the final fight in a wing (the 4th, 8th and 12th fights in the Raid series) they will have a 2nd phase. You said you were a little disappointed Kefka didn’t turn into his god form in his battle, but that’s exactly what he does in the Savage version!

  2. Do savage and most of your minor issues with the Stormblood raids are addressed. Its amazing. You can tell they had to hold back their best tricks a little. Especially Kefka.

PS i think Cid being invisible was also a lowkey nod to FF3 when Cid in that game is… literally invisible when you first meet him. Or turned into some sort of ghost. Of course its also plot setup for Alpha helping us, but i think its funny they chose invisibility.

  3. i would totally recommend trying out the savage versions some time as things like kefka's trick aoes being too obvious is removed in savage, or guardian being too forgettable (the missiles… god the missiles and viruses…) are fixed there
the dev team usually designs the savage versions first and then simplify mechanics to make it easier for normal mode. so if you want to experience the fights in all of their intended glory, savage is the way to go!

  4. Stormblood's story was a bit weird but god if it didn't have some of the best combat content released so far in the game's history (and a lot of it STILL holds up – can't wait for Stormblood Unreals to start rolling out)

  5. Hope you enjoy the Shadowbringers and Endwalker raids just as much, if not more
I think Stormblood just had better fight mechanics all round, not just the raids, even dungeon bosses are more interesting than ARR and HW.
Oh ans Alpha and mini Omega randomly show up around the overworld, and even have had cameos in seasonal events

  6. "Might just end with them killing each other"

    Me: You mean g-

    "Or gettin married"

    ….. 🙂

I LOVE the omega raids, even on normal on and roulettes I'm always happy to see them. I think the story incorporated fan service pretty well, and the fan service was GOOD.

These fights hold up pretty well, especially the normal mode compared to a lot of others IMO, ESPECIALLY if you run them on min IL. Story is still good on a replay, gots the feels.

  7. Halicarnassus is actually also a FF5 reference. Its one of the followers of Exdeath and is the King of the Illusionary castle (yes King) that poses as a damsel in distress, cought by catastrophe (the 2nd boss) before you find out he is the King.
The desert puzzle interlude is a reference to quite a simmilar puzzle from FF5 too. There you first just want to cross the desert and way later want to enter it to find a late-game boss.

Omega is a reacurring superboss in multiple Final Fantasy Main-Line-Games. Always for the strongest ones of each world to improve himself and get closer to the ultimate version of itself.
Thats why it copies us in o12, after we defeat him in o11. If you have not noticed it: Omega-M uses Skills from Physical roles (e.g. Paladins wings, Bards Pitch Perfect or Bard Limit Break 3) and Omega-F uses Skills from Magical Roles (e.g. Black Mage Limit Break 3, Black Mages Blizzard or Black Mages Fire) and ofc their synchronized attacks that they both know and use at the same time. Trying out different strategies and you can see the it trying to learn what works. And it shows in the 2nd Phase (savage exclusive)

Also you really should do the savage fights of the raids. The 4th fight in each tier has a 2nd phase which is exclusive to savage and is really cool. Even the non 4th fights are way better in savage (most of the time). You said that o11n was lacking something? That something that he is lacking is whats ommitted from the normal mode to be savage exclusive.
