  1. 🤔 what you can gather from the recent letter speaks to the FF14 Dev Team and at its very beating heart is YoshiP. He sets the example for his team and actually much of Square Enix other teams as well. The CEO and YoshiP also seems to have a good relationship as he’s there at the Fan Fest engaging, so he too has a degree of humility also even as YoshiP top boss. When you add up the good game, A Dev Team thats also transparent, players can understand and get behind them, it’s a huge reason people luv the game.

  2. I think Yoshi P. Is wise enough to know that 'If you pick up the Glory, then one day you will have to put down the Glory'.

    Thats Wows major problem. The day they picked up the Glory as Best, as #1, as have won – It was the Same day when People started saying 'What will be the WoW Killer?' Who will come take the Glory?

    Yoshi P. Is wise enough to Say – 'We will do US. Make a Game that Has our Twist and we can Be proud of' Then no matter what, no one can say what will kill FF14. It's becomes more of a statement, FF14 Came and was True to Themselves and in that Sense it can Never Lose and Never Be Killed.

I cant speak for wow, but FF14 actually does publicly disclose a huge amount of information, usually right before the next expansion start so in the next couple months we'll probably be seeing it. if you want to see the old ones just search for "FF14 infographics" there's actually quite a few interesting things to read on there, so i highly recommend looking into it!

  4. The only reaction anyone should have about WoW failing is sadness. It does mean a lot of new players are coming to FF and some are really enjoying it which is great, but seeing such an established and respected franchise that inspired so many others falling to ruin is just depressing. You don't have to be a former player to feel bad for others who have basically lost their virtual home, which is what MMOs are to a lot of people.

  5. I was a gm/ co-gm of a raiding guild from TBC to cataclysm (specifically a healer lead, with tank offspec belf paladin). I left in draenor after finally figuring out that world of Warcraft became that abusive spouse. That abusive mentality ramped up especially when ian wouldn't listen and the infamous "don't you have phones???" Of course the ccp got its grubby hands into Activision via Tencent which started dictating direction and censorship. The feeling we get is nostalgia. I mean, I've lost that nostalgia myself, but anyone who has played still has that. The game isn't classic, it5not tbc nor wotlk or even cata. That ship sailed long ago.

The MMO market is rough because you usually compete for the same players who are already playing another MMO, and because of that you don't just need to make a good game but you also need to be on a spot where those who are playing something else are wanting to try your game (usually when the current game from those players isn't good enough for them on that point), and yet those players might not spend too long time on your world in order for you to actually make their time pay off. The fact that XIV is growing is given to Yoshi-P and team making a very good game, but the fact that the game is growing more then expected by Yoshi-P himself is mostrly because of the state of wow (and everything related to it like the refugees and content creators migrating to XIV).

  7. I speak Japanese and I think I should pitch in. At 8:28 Yoshi P stated that "ちょと迷惑。" "chotou meiwaku". If you translate it officially, it does mean little annoying or irritating. But in a context of the conversation, he meant "troubling".

  8. Being a mad fan of your content and style Quazii I gotta send thanks for being the one who really got me to try FFXIV. It has been a revelation. You are awesome, keep up the content- and clone yourself so you can do all that you probably want to be doing for these MMOs !!😆

  9. I just wish they would remake FFXIV or make another MMO. Humility only goes so far, because WoW to me is just so much more fun to play.

    That isn't to say I don't think FFXIV is the better game, because I absolutely think it is.

  10. I think one vital point FFXIV gets that WoW doesn't, is that to get people to pay a monthly sub, they only need to want to log in once a month. The hours long, daily grinds are a burden and a deterrent to the larger casual player base. It's more expensive to go see a 2 hour movie, than to pay a monthly sub for either MMO.

  11. The WOW that inspired FFXIV no longer exists. It is a legend. And FFXIV in its current form is closer to the legend than WOW itself. The difference? Whereas FFXIV developers are ever humbly climbing upwards and hoping to one day meet their legend eye to eye, current WOW developers are bitterly stumbling down further and further away too proud to accept that they are on the wrong path.

  12. "meiwaku" like others have said is kind of on the level of politely saying "annoying, troubling or a nuisance." It's not as direct or rude like "uzai". But to still use the word meiwaku sets a very strong tone and message. Just like politely saying "annoying" or "nuisance" in English, there are other ways to express the sentiment but to use the word sends a clear message. It's why the journalist and team member had such a reaction still.

    Also YoshiP has stated that trying to create that "WoW Killer" or design with the premise of taking advantage a competitors weak points or overtaking another game shouldn't be the intent behind their design. Even as an after thought. It just doesn't work and has ended many MMOs looking to overthrow WoW. Instead they focus on what they felt would make a good game instead. What would the FF version of WoW be like? A company known for its stories, graphics and music. How can those things be in the game without overtaking the game itself like 1.0 did. In the end YoshiP and his team saved FFXIV (And really SE cause while XIII and XV technically made money. The kind bombed in reviews and didn't make nearly as much as they wanted) by turning away from the cornerstones that built the house of Square Enix and focusing on a good game first, and then bringing those elements back into a good game.

  13. I always liked how he isn't afraid to talk about the successes of other games. I know that can be a tricky thing for a public face in a company to directly namedrop their competition in either a positive or negative way. You usually have to tiptoe around a bit.

  15. As someone who played wow for 14 years (i quit before BFA) I have to agree it comes down to suggestive personality. I had no problems breaking my relationship with my characters (despite being heavily invested in wow and having so many rare things on my account) because if I am not having fun, there is no point for me to go on. Perhaps I am cold in that regard- the same can probably stick through if something happens to 14 that made me lose that love. What keeps me going isn't the amount invested but rather those around me (friends who at some point left wow and some who came to 14) the game is just that for me, a game. The only difference I see is, 14 still keeps that humility, especially Yoshi P, and for that, he will continue to have my absolute support in ANY game he makes. Whenever it is 14 or something else.

    Yes but There time you put your chest up and say I'm proud of my team work (Note I know this video is 2019)

  18. The main demonstration of this as a long term player is the annual Rising event, which is the yearly anniversary of the ARR launch. It's a celebration of the game, but it's also a celebration of us, the players, and includes Yoshida himself showing up as an avatar in game to thank us for joining them on their journey. It feels incredibly genuine and demonstrates exactly the humility and gratefulness that you highlight in this video review.

  19. Yoshi P looked to WoW to make the current FFXIV and Blizzard looked to FFXIV 1.0 to make the current WoW.

    I'm joking of course but there are a lot of similarities between the issues 1.0 had and WoW currently has.

  20. That's the difference between Square Enix and Activision/Blizzard. Activision/Blizzard feels entitled to special treatment and will usually double down when they screw up, sometimes flat out ignore even their own customers who will inform them of said problems. Square Enix on the other hand will actually LISTEN TO PLAYER feedback, apologize and make adjustments. That's business ethics 101, a trait Activision/Blizzard have obviously dumped in favor of microtransaction hell and mediocre content.

    Letting your over inflated ego lead to business acumen is step one in an overall collapse.

  21. If you watch the breakdown of the lessons learned from 1.0 that Yoshi P did, you will see that most of the mistakes they made are being made by the WoW devs now. Refusing to listen to fans, pushing content out unfinished to patch later, etcetera. I want WoW to fail because WoW needs a wake up call like FFXIV got with 1.0. WoW needs to be Reborn. And in order to do that, the current team needs a slap in the face, and for someone like Yoshi P to take over and reforge them. That is what I want for WoW. That is why I want WoW to fail. Because, as someone who loves Azeroth and RPGs, WoW HAS failed. It is a ghost of its former self. A Phoenix can’t rise from the ashes until the old is done burning.

  22. All MMO's start feeling that the game belongs to the players and the devs are facilitators. Eventually games that are successful reverse their thinking and begin to believe that it's their game and they let you play it. FF14 rev 2 held on to that original feeling that the game belonged to the players for all these years and it has paid off.

  23. @Quazii YoshiP is a bigger Blizzard fan than you probably realize, he's been to Blizzcon and loved playing World of Warcraft and other Blizzard games too.

  24. The problem with WoW right now is that they didn't follow the saying, there is not reason to fix something that isn't broken. All of sudden some where in the mindset of of Blizzard, they decided to think that certain aspect of the game was "broken" and decided to "fix" these things that actually wasn't broken. When we compare the two games and systems that are in the game, what is the one thing that FF XIV still uses and WoW doesn't? FFXIV still uses Badges and has a Gem Socket System for Gears, while WoW devs have moved away from this system and started to "fix" their game with all these other stupid systems that are overly complicated and frustrate players in both terms of gear acquisition that no longer makes for a fun game play experience. I mean they have even has the token system in place when farming for old mounts from old raid in FF XIV when I could be on my 1 Millionth try to get Invincible from ICC and still not get the mount.

    The simplicity of being able to one determine how long it may take to get something in the game, and actually be done with the acquisition, as well as being able to determine and choose what pieces to get first is that whole agency matter that is now missing from World of Warcraft. Just because something is complicated or seems interesting doesn't equate to fun, and Blizzard need to return to the more simplistic systems.

  25. There's a certain tone here I'm going to push back on a bit.
    When he's talking about taking responsibility, he's referring to "mistakes". I've got a bit of a problem with that characterization.
    A "mistake" is something that shouldn't have been done to begin with, and could have conceivably been foreseen and avoided.

    Improving on something isn't saying the old version was a "mistake". It's acknowledging that you see an opportunity NOW to do better–and seeing what was done BEFORE NOW as a necessary step to get to the opportunity NOW. This is a key component to iterative design.
    Something doesn't have to be "bad" to be able to make it better.

    And taking responsibility to improve a situation doesn't necessarily say anyone is to "blame" for the situation needing to be improved.
    The recent FF popularity explosion is essentially a meteor-strike. No one's fault per se, but the company's responsibility to correct for it.

  26. Two things have driven FFIV current popularity.
    First and foremost FFIV team has worked really hard to put out a great product.
    Secondly, Blizzard and WoW have changed their game development culture and the game itself detrimentally.
    Both of these things has pushed FFIV to be the great game it is now!
