One game that I avoided for many years and yet couldn’t escape was Final Fantasy XIV. A critically acclaimed MMORPG with a free trial so generous that it includes the base game, A Realm Reborn, and the award-winning first expansion, Heavensward, and 60 free levels with no restrictions on play time, ’twas fate that she would ensnare mine very soul! Okay with the shill meme out of the way, onto the real story. I didn’t want to play this game because, well, people who liked it wouldn’t shut up about how great it was. Just a stubborn refusal to try it out. Come this past August and I came across that Ross video from his famous Eggwalker challenge, when he ate a whole inventory’s worth of boiled eggs (and then some, about 148,000) in-game without stopping. I had watched it when it came but for whatever reason, it clicked with me this time. Couple that with one of my favorite streamers focusing on the game, and simple curiosity would get the better of me. Been playing ever since! (In fact, at time of writing, I’m just about to finish Endwalker!)

Onto the music. FFXIV has many songs which I would love to cover and I’ve already picked which one to do next (here’s hoping that works out), but this one stood out as a great one to start with. High-energy battle tracks are sick, after all! Astonishingly, there were no massive challenges here. Once I had all the different parts mapped out, the whole process was a breeze. Even filming went smoothly, with each instrument only needing a couple of takes to get right! The only real difficulty was one bit (like maybe 2 measures) where I didn’t know how to harmonize with the melody. I may or may not have listened to ToxicxEternity’s version of this track “for reference” there! (if you somehow see this, Jack, keep doing what you’re doing! You are forever an inspiration.) Overall, however, smooth sailing! Ya love to see it.

(Note: This composition obviously doesn’t belong to me. The original game was developed and published by Square Enix, and the soundtrack for A Realm Reborn was distributed under Sony. Consider playing the free trial! You’ll find me in Limsa on Faerie.)

Hey, you read this whole thing! Comment “this is cool and all, but why are you wearing a Pikachu hat in a Final Fantasy video?” to let me know how cool you are. (Minor spoilers: because I can.)
