  1. Have to say, one of the things I've had to continue (and still continue!) to adjust too is the lack of FOMO in this game. I played WoW for SO many years and became SO trained on "Gotta do this TODAY or I'm going to fall behind" and now to come into a space where…that just isn't there, is an ENORMOUS breath of fresh air and it has actually turned me off HARD onto ANY FOMO type systems that get engaged.

  2. Although FF14 isn't as blatant as WoW, I would say that it's still pretty bad. The seasonal events for example have produced a ton of crap for the cash shop and is the same type of problem you see in a lot of other MMOs. The means to earn the items aren't placed in the game and are stripped from the game so that they could be sold on the item mall. I would also say that this not only applies to mounts and minions being farmable in game, but also to craftable cosmetics. Part of the reason why our options are so limited is because many items are relegated to the cash shop. People are essentially priced out whether it is being the inability to maintain a subscription (an expansion plus constant subscription over an expansion is something like $200+) or requires buying in to special events at a high price. I don't know how much it would cost to buy all the cosmetics on the cash shop, but I would say it's pretty damn high.

Deleting the Resistance areas altogether would be a mistake as it would be more content they wasted time on developing, but removing the CLL, DR, and Dalraida requirements are something that you're going to have to do if you want people to continue grinding the chain down the line like the Zodiac and Anima weapons. I feel that separating the relic from areas like Eureka and Bozja is essential if you want the relic quest line to survive beyond its current expansion. You may like it, but for what is the majority of players (at least according to Lucky Bancho's survey), more than half of the people who started the Bozjan Southern Front have not finished the first area even after they made THREE separate attempts to save the BSF and it is already struggling to hold onto players. Save #1 was to make Engagements give coins after completing Castrum Lacus Litore because people were just sitting around in BSF and waiting for CLL to appear, making it very difficult if not impossible to actually complete many Engagements. Save #2 was to boost rewards from CLL and and Delebrum Reginae by giving more coins as well as merit for completion. Save #3 was to remove the minimum player requirement from CLL. So while it is still theoretically completeable, we're already in a situation where it is struggling to maintain players despite still being relevant for current endgame content. It will still be there like Eureka, but just like Eureka, BSF likely going to be dead content and those that did finish it will be using Zadnor to level their characters and grind for endgame tomestones or something.

  3. FFXIV has lots of different currencies, true. But I think there was a strategy to it. Gil can only take you so far. Endgame Tombstones helps take away the RNG frustration of not getting the gear you want from raids and dungeons (the new raid coffers are even better, too!). The scrips, from a lore standpoint (Rowena is a giant miser) is funny. From a functional standpoint, it also provides crafters and gatherers an important "catchup" gear, and resources to play THEIR endgame without straight up overwhelming it with bags and bags of gil.

Granted, the market board exists, and scrip items can typically be sold there in exchange for gil. If everything was in one currency like WoW, I imagine RMT would be much worse than it already is.

  4. FOMO is like junk food, it’s good for driving high levels of short term interest/engagement, but as it builds up in your systems, it ultimately ends pretty badly for the long term health of the game and the will of players to continue. WoW is getting the long term effects now, among other problems, with a lot of people rolling away from the whole trap.

  5. I'd say FFXIV has a cosmetic FOMO that might keep some players feel like they have to pay their mandatory sub money to do holiday events. But them being on the cash shop is a bit of a relief compared to removing them forever.

Would it be nicer for the devs to let us buy old items for Gil? Yes. Would it potentially be a good gil sink? Absolutely.

But do I think buying items is the worst option? Not at all. Most people only want some items and most of the events total items are cheaper than the sub fee for the month you missed out on.

Sucks for budgeting but it pays staff, R&D, and future projects. And still most things are pretty cheap. I'll do $2 for an emote I missed out on, sure.

  6. As a wow player and XIV player, I can say I much prefer the way FFXIV is in regards to FOMO. In wow, there is tremendous pressure to do your daily, weekly and patch stuff. I mean we literally have achievements like "Ahead of the curve" that you have to do while content is current or they go away. The way the game is time gated, you have to do things every week to maintain your character or there is real fear of losing your raid spot. The result is, at least for me, things that should be fun start feeling like time trialed chores. Can't go mess around in pvp right now gotta run Torghast…. In FFXIV, one of the many benefits to me is I don't seem to ever feel like I am behind or that I can't catch up. With rare exception, I don't feel like I need to do anything specific at any time. If I want to not play and go play golf, or do something with the family, it's zero stress for me as far as gaming goes. The only FOMO I really have is finishing the MSQ by the time Endwalker is here, and really that is just because I know I will be jealous if everyone is doing content I can't do yet lol.

  7. Fomo is something I learned to hate – it makes me quit a game. There are times I want to play another game and my last MMO forced me to play it unless I'm willing to fall behind. It can do that to me only so many times until I want to just throw it all away. So no … I will not do any time consuming stuff anymore and if a game forces me to do it just to progress I will throw it into the garbage and play the games I want to play when I want to play.

  8. WoW – I planned what exactly I was going to do to get the most done efficiently based on what the game gave me that day. Example: completing the three calling world quests where 1 expires in 1 day, the next 2 days, and the final 3 days. If there were two that took place in the same zone, or on rare occasion get all 3 done in the same zone that immediately became what I did because it meant I didn’t have to do them again for several days and it helped towards my weekly anima collection. In ffxiv, I log in, I decide if I want to do a little Golden saucer, or crafting/fishing for challenge logs, or fates, or leveling a job.

  9. How do you get fomo playing a single player game like Majora's mask? All I can think of is getting the fierce deity mask maybe?? I wish he elaborated on that because collecting all the masks was fun.

  10. In regards to FOMO there is also a subset where you have 'Fear of being Punished'.. which is a very different dynamic in gaming. Where not doing content and not keeping up adds a net negative to your overall experience and that those among your gaming peers will acknowledge your punishment and shun you until you do catch up. This is mentally and physically harming the player and long term exposure to this sort of FOMO can lead to some real bad PTSD.

But. there are plenty of normal FOMO experiences in daily life especially when it comes to social dynamics, all of which are fears placed on yourself so you force yourself to otherwise engage despite your deep desire to not want to, even if there are many times no real consequences by not keeping up. FFXIV systems have a ton of FOMO for the general player base, but nearly 90% of that content doesn't punish you for not engaging regularly. I think the most harsh FOMO in XIV is not completing MSQ in a timely manner, and even then the wide range of the playerbase is telling people to not rush and pace yourself. If there is one thing I love about the MSQ FOMO ..is that its incredibly fun and easy, and not difficult and punishing.

  11. I don’t mind if they have time-exclusive cosmetics that can no longer be attained, but I’m hard against time-locking content and activities. And that includes trivializing old content with “catch-up” boosts, nerfs, etc that make old content boring.
