You do you, boo.
Gatekeeping is such an annoying thing in anything. >.<;
More the merrier
Am on a break from the fighting in the story that I took up Mining/Fishing/Botany lol
I try to tell people to give the story a shot, at least at least as far as returning to the Waking Sands after Titan (since that is the first major story beat after you get out of the story zones) because I think people coming in may think they don't like the story in MMOs just because they have had a bad experience with the story in WoW, but at the end of the day, like you said, they can play like they want.
I've only noticed a player boosted once and that was because I was wondering how they made it as far as a level 75 dungeon without losing their sprout. It's not something I notice on a regular basis and if they hadn't been playing an expansion job I still wouldn't have been able to tell.
Warchief, there's this player I knew last year, a sprout, who got REALLY into fishing. And I mean, he was obsessed. Even before he reached level 30 on his pugilist, he got to level 80 on Fisher…! My entire FC was like dude… Cause he will always ask, how do I catch this and that? But the fish he asked for are only found in expansion areas… It took a while for many of us to basically stop forcing him to go forward in his MSQ. Some of us (myself included) were a bit annoyed with him… But in the end some of us had a talk with him about how much more challenging fishing will be at higher levels of the expansions. We learned a lesson here to not just flame someone immediately, but just guide them. You're right, there are sooo many different kind of players in MMO.. XD
Edit: I just wanna add, he became our main source of aquarium fish XD
I'm in the first two categories, but on further reflection, it's not really the story skipping that I mind. It's when people skip the story & then say the story is bad. You do you, but if you're not following or reading the story, let us who follow it enjoy it.
What pertains to boosting, I mind it because I come from WoW where boosting is actively ruining the game. Tangibly so. But I also mind it because of people like Quin, who boost a job they don't know & buy a story skip, then enter high level content & die to basic mechanics they don't know because they skipped the story (it teaches the fundamental mechanics), only to blame the healers because they didn't survive two overlapping AoEs. Then they say the game sucks.
If you boost & you don't already know what you are doing, don't blame the game; you're the one who chose not to have fun by skipping the learning experience.
You do you, but don't blame the game or other people of skipping and boosting causes you to have a bad time with the gameplay.
I've said it before but I'll say it again. the whole concept of "WoW Refugees" I feel is dumb. at the end of the day, All they are is people with different experiences, Sometimes values or ideas from you, Which is a valuable thing in any community. Besides, More players = more content and more elaborate content. So I still feel saying any GROUP of people in games is bad is just shortsighted and centered around fear. Maybe it's just me.
the thing most people dont realize is most older ff players were already wow refugees who left long ago and just didn't want that culture to follow them here. i think that's what most people were scared of but I think its ridiculous.
i came from mobas and good lord the culture sock was needed lmao.
i do everything in game at least to come degree. gpose, housing, raiding, like I've tried and do it all XD
and I'm a boosted player
I teach people who have been playing years longer than me how to play their classes
bottom line is you cant really judge people just from how they started/ where they came from
but people sure will try
I never play WoW but i will defend WoW refugees. Community attitude is base on how the game is design and their relationship with the game. WoW players behavior is large the fault of the game, if you design something that is too punishing and time wasting when someone failed it will determine how likely they will be toxic. Imagine FF14 dungeon wipe and doesn't give a short cut back to final boss, having to spend 5 minutes running back every time will make someone toxic real fast after a few repeat.
Wonderful video~
1. story skippers; you can always rewatch the cutscenes. As long as you don't do the whole "the story suxx!!1!!" while not watching or reading any of it lol.
2. Yoshi p. pretty much gonna work on this; the most recent interviews have said as much. while we have skips; I still suggest anybody wanting to "jump to endgame" to do so with caution.
3. WoW refugees should be welcomed; and hopefully the ones with bad attitudes adjust to the friendly community. I really think a good healthy relationship between devs and community helps foster a better overall attitude from players. But there will always be jerks, even in base FF XIV.
My hubs made an alt character name Gordon Ramsay, plans to become a culinary and run around Limsa asking everyone "where is the lamb sauce"
But what if gatekeeping is how we have fun? You don't pay my sub!
(Obvs joking)
FFXIV feels a lot like WoW Classic back in the day. It doesn't matter what level you're sitting are, or whether you're raiding or not. Games are there to have fun. All there is to it. Glad to hear you're enjoying FFXIV!! 🙂 I love your content, keep up the great work.
As kind and welcoming as FFXIV's community can be, and as I've said elsewhere, they do have a big gatekeeping problem among the veteran playerbase that take their knowledge and overanalysis of the game for granted, and expect a very high bar of performance or "dedication to improving" beyond "good enough" in even the leveling content. I saw someone recently "say the quiet part out loud" and admit that they macro their rotation, and hooo leee craaap, you'd think they'd said "I use the live-harvested hides of [insert your favorite cute animal here] to make gaming gloves." Threats of "auto-votekick if I see you" and the whole nine yards. The happy land of FFXIV is happy until you try to speak against the "conventional wisdom," and they'd better not catch you cutting corners, because those corners are there to weed out the "players that don't belong here!"
The biggest difference between WoW and FFXIV is WoW gives you the freedom to group with people that will tell you to your face all sorts of nasty reasons why you don't belong in this group/content, while FFXIV pretty much relies on the game doing the gatekeeping, which it does do (I saw Belular call the ARR patch content slog a "filter," a term he got from the community apparently), and so when people find ways around those systems that they see as present to protect the integrity of "who is allowed to group with me," or indeed "who belongs in this game at all," they get REEEALLY MAD and the ugliness comes out. They can smile and be welcoming because the game is supposed to filter the people that "don't deserve" their smiles. That's not ok.
Only point discussed here that I had a bad experience with was early in Stormblood when we had a trial (Susano, lvl 63) and one of the tanks was clearly a brand new boosted char and was being an idiot and when time came for a tank to block the giant blade, he didn't know to do it, so other tank grabbed it and he screamed at that tank for 'taking my job' sat down and logged out then and there…
Oh yea, there's for sure gatekeeping in the end game raiding community; outside of the other gatekeeping you mentioned. Especially around the ultimate raids atm. Thankfully we got some wonderful new players who are sick of that toxic mentality, and are a breath of fresh air to raid with. Don't let anyone tell you that its "required" to use 3rd party addons in order to clear content. Why? Simple, the game is multiplatform (might be xbox as well in the future). There's plenty of ways to test your rotation on end game raids without having to rely on 3rd party tools. Look up the Stone, Sky, Sea, which expanded into the Lawns for SHB.
The other gatekeeping people tend to do is treating progression like its farm, and have expected you in advance to have looked at guides or have previous experience. You can even find this during the first week of new content. My best advise is to find a good static that is of like minded individuals, and if you can't find one I suggest you learn to avoid the bad/toxic parties in pf on your data center. Thankfully the community is still very helpful overall, but you will still run into occational elites.
I was lucky to have a static of friends from my first FC, and we did take alot longer than standard groups but we had a blast. Even though my friends wife wasn't great at doing top end dps, she was able to learn the muscle memory of the mechanics and avoided dying. At the end of the day the tried and true method of doing good dps is not dying lol.
ehmmm, it's very interesting tho, by the words from yoshiP recently, some "gatekeepers" just too enthusiastic about newbies.
From the motivation scale, they mean no harm, but the truth is, newbies may feel disturbed.
To let people enjoy their game is indeed the issue, but more importantly, this should be in their own way.
If newbies cannot even enjoy it, all the good stuff will be just nonsense.
Instead of trying to steer people away, I kindly remind them that many many features are blocked by the msq. They will have to do it eventually but it’s best to let others do it at their pace. We are now a month away from Endwalker and I certainly hope people won’t rush sprouts through in the spirit of ‘not falling behind’. On that note, Peebs please finish ShB in the next month haha
