  1. I'll never get over how insecure the MSQ locusts are about ARR. For people who love the game they are quick to throw it under the bus just because it doesn't measure up to a later expansion. Most people are taking that criticism seriously and never trying the game in the first place because of it.

  2. All us wow players have been trained to expect games to have a very incomplete, and honestly, unimportant story. I always catch myself rushing through games and I have to remind myself to slow down. I look forward to both of y’all’s journey. Yes ARR has some grind-y fetch quest-y parts that are a pain, but over-all the way that the FF14 team has paced the game is solid. Keep being engaging and building y’all’s community and they will carry you through even past the MSQ. Have fun guys and enjoy!! Love from NA Primal/Hyperion.

  3. I'm here to watch the story but also I think it's great to do all the content you can along the way. Binging the story will present a very different experience than if you take some time and savor everything. For me, what resonates as a viewer is genuine lore appreciation and thoughtful discussion, taking your time and not talking to chat during the cut scenes, dialogues and exploring all the other NPCs you can talk to along the way.

One thing I'd suggest is with all the optional side content like extra dungeons, maybe tribals and things like that, spend a few hours each stream doing that sort of thing before hopping into story content, instead of doing all of them all at once over a couple of streams. That let's you stretch out the non story content over time and mix up the content types in every stream.

And never worry about viewers ditching if you decide to chill in a stream. Anyone who feels like that can go watch the vod.

  4. People remember ARR differently because it was genuinely a lot more of a mess originally. It still probably wasn't as bad as it's made out to be but there was a lot more slog sections that got cut especially in the post patches, also for the longest time new players were pretty much forced to skip all the praetorium stuff since they put it in the instance so most people probably didn't even know what the fuck was going on at the end. You either didn't get to play or skipped the cutscenes. Those being unskippable/redone as dungeons are more recent updates.

  5. 22:26 while it's great that it exists at all, the sync system in ffxiv isn't as good as it really should be. With the way ilvl sync works, if your equipped gear is high enough above the ilvl it is being synced to, you can end up with far more stats than a gear set of the sync level would have. This is definitely a noticeable power gain, and is a large problem with older ultimate raids. UWU and UCOB (the two stormblood ultimates) practically have no dps checks at all anymore due to the unfortunate way ilvl sync works, and even TEA (the shadowbringers ultimate) barely has them at this point. This issue is compounded by the changes to jobs and skill potencies over the years. Content still does age a lot in this game, and it's very noticeable.

46:30 so, when it comes to raiding in this game, the playerbase has a really bad habit of overcomplicating positioning/movement/etc when it comes to strats and positioning. There's many things where you absolutely can, and arguably should, just eyeball it yet people will lose their mind if there's any variability at all instead of following a script. It's genuinely a problem a lot of the time where people will only learn the movement for how to follow a specific strat without understanding why the strat and the mechanic it solves work. This is in addition to an extreme over-reliance on ground markers when the arenas themselves are often designed in a way such that the floor textures will feature very prominent indicators that are used for mechanics in the fight. For example, the first trial in Endwalker already has very easy to spot markers on the ground and walls, yet people will always request the actual floating markers even though they are completely useless in that particular fight. PF is often jokingly referred to as a hive mind due to these mentalities.

53:00 you'll really like the later stuff then. the tuning gets a lot tighter after arr. coils doesn't even come close to pushing you to your limits. give it time and you'll know 😉

1:07:20 this happened in ffxiv too, albeit to a far lesser extent. it became too much work to add more job quests every expansion, so they replaced them with "role quests" starting in shadowbringers.

  6. I wish people stopped with the whole "ARR is slow/bad" they keep telling sprouts because 1) as you said in the podcast it's not that bad in general, pretty typical mmo stuff 2) there are plenty of people who love ARR 3) going on about how it gets better later can be detrimental to someone's enjoyment of ARR thinking they need to rush through that OR they might give up on the game entirely because one shouldn't have to "suffer" through something bad/mediocre to get to the "good" stuff. Yes the later expansions are amazing, but just shut up and let sprouts go at their own pace. If they ask if some aspect of the game improves later, tell them, but don't start their experience with doomsaying ARR.

  7. Enjoyed both of your perspectives after spending some time in XIV. I grew up playing WoW and played it for 15 years, and there's something about XIV that feels like home compared to the modern WoW. I feel like WoW has slowly become more and more of an isolated experience. People don't say hi or talk during dungeons, no ggs after finishing it's just zoom zoom zoom exit dungeon. It feels so….lonely. Hard to get into pug keys, hard to get into pug raids, so what to do? I feel like gear, mounts, and collectibles have become so plentiful that a lot of the "Whoa I wish I could have that! That is so cool!" has just lost all it's prestige. I just…..miss when it was more about the journey instead of the destination (Rushing leveling and endgame is where all the content is). It can sometimes feel like we're playing Diablo with a WoW skin.

  9. I hope you both enjoy the rest of your (long) journey through Eorzea and beyond. It will be interesting to hear your different opinions and how things contrast with WoW. (I ended up ranting a bit below).

I left WoW behind after 12 years with the start of Shadowlands. I do get the urge to play sometimes but some of that was sated by playing Classic versions on and off but I've not touched WoW in like a year+? I really don't miss it as much as I thought I would. I think what I miss is like a stylistic choice in game design like big epic raids(I don't miss the excessive trash) and the combat being more snappy, FF14's combat has a slight delay to things, WoW is press button thing happens instantly. I do prefer WoW's healing style, you have to deal with more constant damage.

FF14 just respects my time more and I feel like I can step away more easily and not feel like I'm losing out in any real regard. I set myself a bunch of long term goals. Get all jobs to 90, did that not long ago, now I'm working on crafters. I've been doing reputation grinds on the side. Generally as I feel like it chip away at all side content. Because it's all done on one character it does not feel like time being divided by a bunch of alts. I hope to have everything done before Dawntrail. I can't say I felt the same way in WoW. At least not with the Legion to Shadowlands era.

This has turned into another WoW rant…I love(d) WoW but it's not the game I used to play, maybe some FF14 players feel the same way that started in ARR. I think the big one is small raids. I love 8 man size in FF. I miss 10 man in WoW. I had so much more fun raiding during Wrath, Cataclysm and Mists. If Dragonflight had said 20 was going 10man, I and a friend of mine might of given it one serious go again. I can't be dealing with 25~ people. Always a few people that annoy the heck out of me. Mythic+ being toxic beyond belief if you don't have a team of friends to do it with. FF is my MMO home now unless something with it goes horribly wrong or the next big next gen MMORPG comes along that might tear me away (Riot League MMO).

  10. It really needs to be said more often that the ARR and Post ARR that people remember doesn't really exist anymore, because now there's this disconnect between vets continuing the "Just get through ARR, i promise" (not without reason) and the newer players going "Huh, this is nothing like the horror stories".

  11. I hope you continue doing the content and MSQ at your own pace. Try not to be too concerned with the 'stalling' comments. Personally, if someone in stream kept badgering someone after they had said they're interested in trying things and playing the game they way THEY want to, I'd jump to defend them. Hope you two enjoy your time in Eorzea.

  12. Great Podcast!
One small suggestion for your adventure : if you like it, make a tier list of characters after each expansion (I.e. One once you have finished 2.0, after 2.5, after 3.0, 3.5, etc.). It's great to see how your perception of these characters evolves through your adventure and I regret not doing it myself.

  13. Welcome and im happy your enjoying the MSQ. Don't worry about enjoying side content, you should enjoy the game at your pace. Im pretty sure if you started fishing, you could get full ocean fishing trips of just enjoying the mini game.

  14. Oh man, touching on fishing slightly, you and Russ should organie an in-game Ocean Fishing trip sometime. It's a great way to pick up on how the basics of fishing work and imo it's a tonne of fun!

  15. Interesting talk. I just want to remind you that there are many FFXIV players that also played WOW before, during the time when WOW was king. Coming back to WOW (that empty shell on modern days) is not an option anymore for most. It is missing things that can actually pull you back inside again… most friends I know only get back to WOW due to nostalgia kicking in, and they drop off a couple of weeks later.
