Final Fantasy XIV – The Burning Otaku

Welcome to World of Weebcraft – The Burning Otaku. They do things differently here, and they do them a lot better than most of the competition, too.

  1. the recommended gear button only equips the highest level gear you have that your current class can equip, it doesn't look at stats. When a character is at level cap they still have to choose between equal level gear pieces with different substats (crit, direct hit, determination etc…) the recommended gear button does not distinguish these, it only looks at level and class

  2. FFXIV..hmm…I might have to give this a try. WoW disappointed me 10 years ago…just couldn't get into it. SWTOR flopped. I haven't played an MMORPG in almost a decade. I might give this one a shot.

  3. What really baffles me is that it is Final Fantasy 14. Would it not have been more appropriate to name it "Almost Final Fantasy" in the beginning? Or maybe "Close To But Not Quite Final Fantasy" or even "Approaching The Final Fantasy With Each New Iteration Of The Game But Really Trying Very Hard, We Promise"? Finality seems really not that final once you go two digits.

  4. do multiple jobs as once you master lets say warrior and mage class, you get the magic sword class, i think warrior and their was dagoon and there IS a warlock class, you need mastery of a few mage class (Black White, Time, Geomancer, maybe even Monk and dancer class, i forgot)

  5. What FFXIV refere to as "Job" is actually not the crafting, but a class specification starting at level 30. A gladiator turns into a paladin, a marauder turns into a warrior, an arcanist turns into Scholar and/or Summoner, an archer turns into a bard, etc… (Later on, you unlock jobs that have no base class and starts at a higher level.)

  6. I have to say, though, that WoW has been really game at playing catch-up. Instead of just saying "la, la, la, we can't year you" or giving up, they have steadily tried to incorporate improvements from other MMOs and their own modder community, into the core game. However…

FF XIV's innovation here, completely sidestepping modern gamers' obsessive and fun-killing need for perfect optimization, really is genius. I'm not sure if it's the quantum leap that the MMORPG genre needs to once again be a competitive genre, but it's certainly a step in the right direction.

Anything that encourages players to enjoy gameplay rather than focus entirely on optimization is a step in the right direction…

  7. Love your vids Jingles, but im pretty sure theres something called class trials in WoW where you can try a max lvl char to test out different classes before choosing

  10. Huh. Might have to give this one a go. Fallout 76 seems to have been doing some similar things recently, allowing you to swap perks and skillpoints easily and instantly switch between camps you've built. There's probably less to do overall though.

This review does a good job of summing up why I don't like WoW very much. You spend ages levelling up a character and you don't really know what it'll do until you're max level, then you're limited in what you do unless you want to grind levels out all over again. The first MMO I played was Runescape, where you could switch classes in the amount of time it took to swap gear you had equipped, which I thought was really neat. Then moved into EVE (because spaceships), which while pretty far removed gameplay and skill training wise was similar in that you could just change ships to do something different, which was really neat.

That being said I have fallen out with grinding for grinding's sake though so I've started playing games which aren't MMOs or WoT style things a lot now.

  11. The "Job" system is common in most mangas. That FF decided to go with this is great as it allows you do learn like we do in real life.
My cooking is at level 5 or 6. Swimming, though is level 1 or 2. Don't ask me about finances because it's a flat zero. Tax time is not fun. Lol.
In terms of gameplay, it's as simple as it is in real life. I want to fix a computer, I get out my tools and flash drives and so on (weapons as it were) and go at it. IF I am fixing dinner, well, I suppose my "weapon" is my pan or skillet 😉

The old way was a direct result of D&D and the ideas of fixed classes and no ability to learn other skills or paths. Mage-Mage. Picking locks is not for you.

Meanwhile the rest of us are watching Lock Picking Lawyer in our free time and saying "hold on, it's not THAT hard, why would I be blocked from something I can learn in a few weeks in my spare time?"

Welcome to the new meta of MMOs, Jingles 🙂

  12. I was their Jingles! I was there for the start of 1.0 which tried to be to much like 11. I was their when they introduced the jump function to an Asian game and Asian players about lost their minds with anger. I was their for 2 years as a Bard bugs and all living what square did with the story to fix one of their biggest mistakes. And I was their for this epic live event that destroyed the world and closed the servers. Me and my best friend at the time actually have our names in the credits you see at the end of the 2.0 story line.

  13. Welcome back to our weeb game there are complimentary cat ears by the door.

I'm glad you're paying attention to not only the lore of the world, but the lore of the game as well. I mean you might not be reading all the text but that's okay, you're allowed to play games how you want.

Final Fantasy XIV hasn't been waiting to shine, it's already been shining in it's own way. I don't think beating WoW is as big of a deal for the game as people are making it out to be. It might be for WoW but the devs of FFXIV were already doing their best to make the best game they could possibly make and they've been doing a good job making the game better and better with each expansion without ever getting away from the core of what they learned from destroying the world in the first place.

(I still think your comment about the music in the first video is wrong but I won't hold it against you.)

  14. Jingles, actually in WoW vanilla normal dungeons were to learn do your roles, but after expansion blizzard changed the focus to end game. That was sad moment, because after that, it was just grind faster to get raid. That is the reason for people don't know their roles or how i see it.

  15. I played wow for a lot of years. The good thing about wows statistic system is that it encourages experimenting and awards knowledge and understanding of the game. For example, armor caps for tanks had to be discovered by in game players, the info was not given to them. I still feel like FF14 is better though, because you know, blizzard.

  16. oh and believe me when i say that FFXIV is the only mmo that has ever done the "all classes for one character" concept (with the exception of Phantasy Star 2 Online to a far lesser extent) and i can say this with confidence because i've sunk in time on every single MMO game (not just mmorpg's, all mmo's.) that has ever existed, even games that became massive flops, and games that tried to follow the FFXIV formula to some degree. (only games i haven't had a good proper test with are Blue Protocol and Ashes of Creation)

also in regards to wanting to test out classes in FFXIV without having to grind to max level, this is actually quite possible to do by using the Palace of the Dead & Heaven on High 100 floor super dungeons (super as in huge, not hard. monsters in these dungeons are tame compared to endgame content) that allow a player of absolutely any level (even level 1) to enter the dungeon, with the level scaling to the maximum allowed for the dungeon.

plus giving the player dungeon locked universal weapons and armors that are upgraded within the dungeon and are shared across all classes of the character within the dungeon only. basically allowing you to try out the class with every skill (upto the dungeon level cap) available at the optimal item level. and its a great dungeon for practicing party coordination & gameplay without any risk of unintentionally griefing the duty roulette parties with your noobliness.

(tip: if you are a new player doing a duty for the first time or are not confident in yourself with the dungeon, let your party know that you are
new and inexperienced and they will gladly help you along, teach you, and bear with your struggles, this is a given for all sprouts and returners.)
