Final Fantasy XIV – Tank – Role Basics

The role of a tank is the forefront of the entire party, if you fall everyone else will usually follow after. Not only are you more of a leader position, your fights as the game progresses is more exclusive and different than that of a DPS/Healer role. It is important as a tank to mitigate as much damage as possible for yourself and the entire party while holding the boss’s and monsters’ attention and dealing your own damage forms to them on top. More often than not you will also have to solve other mechanics that the rest of the party does not. Other times you may have to even turn the boss into your party so the cleave doesn’t one shot you! (e.g. Shiva EX Icebrand Sword shotgun as an example) Each boss is different so don’t treat anything the same!

Versatility and adjusting is key to constant success.

All of this may seem intimidating but a great tank is always sought after for, even more so than a healer if executed well, especially in the later stages of the game.

  1. Shirk is used for swapping tanking positions. For example, sprout tank doesn't know to taunt/take over tank, so you shirk them. I also shirk if all my mitigations are on cool down.
Shirk is also great for situations such as, when a DPS wants to face-pull and take a shot at tanking before the full raid arrives at fight. Mark #4 for 4HEad and Shirk them. 🙂

  2. dont every sprint away from your healer… thats one reason why most new tanks die. u think are creating distance from the mobs but also now your healer needs to chase after u. when hit in the back from a mob thats more chance from them to crit hit u. u cant block from the back. like GB's parry. u parry nothing when u sprint away making the cd worth less. sprinting away from your team/healer just makes there job even harder. never sprint in content just to make it faster
