  1. 34:14 This is not the same otter as in Sui-no-Sato, though it is the same model. You can also get a minion with the same model, named the Odder Otter.

No, the otter in Sui-no-Sato is Isobe. Isobe has a deck that is a random 5 cards from a pool of 8 rather than a consistent 5 like you have. Unfortunately, that deck contains 4 4*'s and 3 5*'s, where your deck can only have 1 of each.

So he is very, very hard to beat and requires building a deck to make the most of the Plus mechanic, something that can be hard to wrap your head around and play towards.

Then, even if you can beat this otter, the cards that drop from him, cards that you can only get from beating this otter, have a ~9% and ~1% drop rate.

So you have to beat this very hard to beat otter many, many, many times.

Long story short: Triple Triad is a fun game, but collecting every Triple Triad card is pain.

  2. I've been looking forward to this one. Tataru has some great scenes!

43:10 This fight has one of my favorite debuffs in the game:

"Falling: A distinct lack of terra firma prevents the use of certain actions."
    I love how that's phrased.

And bit of side trivia, FFXIV has a holiday event for new years. During the Year of the Tiger, The legend of the white tiger Byakko was a large part of that holiday quest. If you had completed the Four Lords quests previously, Byakko himself will show up (in a silly disguise to stay anonymous) to experience the festivities himself.

  3. 4:49 I wonder if we're going to get a "greying" of the "oni=evil" thing. I expect not, but I dunno.
    6:23 A little squad and a chaperone.
7:02 Lots of spicy honey (or delicious chili sauce, if you prefer).
12:54 That… kind of looks like a Kamaitachi. Looks a little serpentine.
    20:13 Thank you, Tataru.
    20:55 I'm loving this bit.
    22:06 Tamamo?!
22:16 You uh… might not want to know? If this Tamamo matches who I'm thinking of, the short answer is "nothing good". (Fate/_ doesn't count)
    23:19 Hello, sickle-weasel.
24:31 I don't know this reference, but the only Inugami I know doesn't murder indiscriminately.
36:53 Interesting note: "basically" the only difference between youkai (demons) and kami is reverence, in a sense. So this tracks 100%.
38:28 Also, the ara/nigimitama is nice to have thrown in.

  4. I hate to say I'm kinda sad Dan Jones didn't get involved, it's nigh time for some vengence upon the Buff Cats!

Completely different note, Amatsu Kaze is in the repetoire of songs I annoy my long-suffering coworkers with. Can't help it, it's really good when just cleaning and going about the place haha

  5. – i love how Soroban basically goes "oh no the Fplk tale is all symbolism… but the Loot tho!"
    – i mean it would be nice if Tataru & Soroban could join
    – honestly i would love if we could get the best of both worlds & have Playable Trusts, i wanna go punching things as Lyse, yeah you could probably cosplay them but then you have characters like Alphanaud who have fully custom movesets
    – yeah this lava looks great, not tasty like Spicy Honey, but looks pretty dang cool. Honestly is impressive how much a strong art direction & appealing Color Pallete could do regardless of Graphical limitations (casually points at HoloCure, or anything made by Sabotage Studios)
    – funny you say that, as there is a Kamaitachi-inspired Pokemon: the Sneazle line!
    – Soroban, really?
    – … yeah that checks out with another certain Inugami, of the Eekum Bokum variety
    – Genbu got out easy by only being YEETed by Tataru
    – Dan must once again face his old nemesis: Buff Cat!
    – Senri tells explanations exactly how i do, i love that big ball of fluff

  6. Playfriends, it's time to balance some accounts. The Scions are in the red due to Alphinaud's shopping, and Tataru has a plan to get us back in the black. This is your spoiler free lore comment!

4:50 – Tenzen here isn't just any samurai, he's a reference! A reference to XIV's predecessor Final Fantasy XI. There, Tenzen was a samurai and the guardian of the Phoenix, which was linked to his legendary blade (The Phoenix Blade in FFXIV). Tenzen was a major character in the Chains of Promathia storyline, where he, along with other heroes, worked to prevent the return of the Twilight God. Final Fantasy XIV players might be more acquainted with Tenzen's time daughter, Iroha, as she is the crossover character for the FFXI event quest. Iroha is one of the protagonists of Rhapsodies of Vana'diel, which seemed to be the finale for FFXI back in 2015. This has since been proven wrong with a new update in 2020. Notable, the soundtrack that plays in the temple is similar to the FFXI track "Iroha".

6:20 – I love the randomness of parties when going into dungeons. I don't know if this party is "chorus line mom had to bring her kids to work today" or "local Viera hasn't realized she's an adopted child yet". Although my favorite group of lalafells + not-lalafell has to go to a group that ran a Miqo'te school teacher leading a field trip.

The Four Lords are a reference to a group constellations in East Asian mythologies, sometimes called the Four Auspicious Beasts. Each is associated with a cardinal direction. Sometimes a fifth Beast is added, allowing them to correspond with the five east Asian elements. The earliest depiction seems to be in a Chinese tomb, dating back to ~5300 BCE.

The first we encounter is Genbu, which is the Japanese name for the Black Tortoise of the North. Sometimes the tortoise is noted as the Black Warrior, as the literal name does not always indicate an animal. Visual depictions usually have a tortoise entwined with a snake, which is a form Persona/Shin Megammi Tensei fans should be familiar with. Genbu is associated with the element of Water (as his boss battle demonstrates). And the "talking turtle" joke is one of my favorites, and if Dan takes on the Monster Hunter crossover trial there's a "talking cat" joke too.

Oh boy, I forgot about all these little critters. Time for a mythology dive. None of this is comprehensive, and there are differing depictions across East Asia:

22:05 – Kudagitsune, or kuda-kitsune, or kanko, is a type of fox spirit that hides in bamboo tubes. it is said the fox can tell portents of the future, or perform curses. The nine tailed fox they speak of is Tamamo Gozen, the final boss of a chain of FATEs in the region. She's still out there, but quite hidden.

22:25 – Komainu, or Lion Dogs, are frequently seen depicted in statues flanking the entrances of temples or other prominent structures.

22:47 – Nue, as they indicate, is typically depicted as a chimera with the body of a racoon-dog. It is usually associated as a terrible monster.

23:16 – Kamaitachi are a type of yokai, depicted weasels with massive sickle shaped front claws, and ride dust devils.

24:09 – Furi, known as Fengli in Chinese, is a type of flying leopard, which will feign its death if attacked.

24:25 – Inugami is a dog god, which is said to feed on the malice of people, before coming back to destroy them. Or you might be more familiar with her as a kickboxing, retro gaming vTuber from Hololive. Chainsaw Wow!

24:55 – Senri is, interestingly enough, the Chinese name for a spirit which may be the basis of the Japanese nekomata. Nekomata are sometimes known as pet cats that have lived well beyond a normal lifespan, fled into the wilds, and now eat people. Or steal food, maybe, I mostly know her as the gamer cat vTuber at Hololive.

31:00 – Byakko, or the White Tiger of the West, is associated with element of metal (yes, metal is one of the 5 Asian elements).

34:30 – It might not be the same otter, but it's the same minion model.

Next time: The flames of longing are not so easily quenched…

  7. 4:36 Tenzen is a character from Final Fantasy XI, specifically from the Chains of Promathia expansion. A samurai from the nation of Aradjiah in the far east of Vana'diel, the world of FFXI, he wields the power of the terrestrial avatar Phoenix within his blade, and seeks to save his homeland from a phenomenon known The Emptiness. Phoenix is in poor shape in FFXI, but every foe Tenzen's blade fells gives Phoenix some measure of lifeforce. Alas, the rulers of Aradjiah, seeing Phoenix's poor condition, sacrificed many innocents to the blade to keep Phoenix's flame lit.

21:52 The background music here is "Iroha", an arrangement of the song of the same name from Final Fantasy XI. In FFXI, it's the theme of, well, Iroha, a girl from a future where all the world and its peoples were lost to a force known as the Cloud of Darkness. In the Rhapsodies of Vanadiel expansion, she travels back in time to prevent the apocalypse. She also has a connection to Phoenix, who revives her when she dies on her mission – and to Tenzen, whose future self was her father. With the help of Phoenix and the player character, whose future self was her mentor, she succeeds in preventing the future she comes from from happening, at the cost of her own existence. Before she disappears, she expresses confidence that she and the player will meet again, when she is born into the new future she's created. In one of FFXIV's two FFXI crossover events, Iroha finds herself in Hydaelyn. Her memories are fragmented, but even after the Warrior of Light helps her regain them, she doesn't return to Vana'diel, presumably because her timeline no longer exists there, and continues to live her second chance at life within Eorzea.

22:17 She's involved in a FATE chain in Yanxia – in fact, she's one of Stormblood's two superboss world FATEs.The other being Ixion from Final Fantasy X, whose FATE occasionally happens in the Lochs.

43:05 More like, a furry given form, given how anthropomorphic he's become.

50:09 Tenzen's appearance here is pretty much identical to FFXI's Tenzen, in case you didn't play FFXI and were wondering what he looked like.

  8. This trial series is one of my favorites in the game! I hope that cut just before after the second boss wasn't because Turmin made the classic blunder in Hell's Lid, which is try to pull in one go the entire first set of mobs before those two big mini bosses (which Dan mostly cut, you only see the second one die in the video). While you CAN do that if you're relatively well-geared for your level, it requires that your healer be Johnny-on-the-spot, so it's much nicer to just split them into two groups. If you don't, it's very easy to end up with a party wipe by accident. Definitely not something I've done more than once, no. Definitely not.

  9. BLU's Clues: The fancy ring of aetherial turtle shells that Genbu puts up at 17:10 is the Chelonian Gate and–you guessed it–BLUs can do it, too. The spell conjures that pretty shell-wall, which reduces incoming damage by 20% as long as you don't move or take other action, for up to 10 seconds. If it soaks 30% of your max health this way, the Chelonian Gate gives you an Auspicious Trance buff. This changes the spell into Divine Cataract, which unleashes crashing waves of water to damage nearby enemies.

Divine Cataract has a special bonus, however, which involves another neat BLU trick. Dan has pointed out a huge lighthouse in La Noscea a few times–the one with giant orange crystals smashed through it. This is Pharos Sirius, the site of two dungeons. In the Hard version of Pharos Sirius, BLUs can master Aetherial Mimicry, a spell that lets them target another player and siphon off a bit of their role mojo. A BLU mimicking a healer gets powerful upgrades to healing magic, a DPS-mimic gains a hefty buff to their critical and direct hit chances, and tank-mimics become much more annoying. (To mobs, that is.) Tank-mimics also get bonuses to defensive spells–in this case, they deal double damage with Divine Cataract.
