Oh hey! That thing I mentioned! That I was almost sure wouldn't get covered! Nice!!
Today on PlayFrame: Durmin donates to the Enclave! The Doman Enclave! Because unflooding Doma Castle would take far longer than funding development on dry land.
It feels a bit weird that you have to go and do a specific sidequest with some of those Doman kids in Mor Dhona in order to actually, fully unlock this endeavor, but that required sidequest is a cute example of the WoL going back to do small-time hero things (if you're like me and didn't do that sidequest before), so I'm fine with it.
once again, praise durmin. pat durmin. durmin cute.
edit: also, the little transition screens for inventory management/travel. they are good. I like. I have not previously had the opportunity to complement this.
edit 2: the Doman reconstruction is a nice little opportunity to make some extra gil each week by selling stuff you don't need, or by trading in Allagan coins for far more than their retail value. Compared to the Ishgardian Restoration, which provides a self-contained means to level pretty much all of your crafters/gatherers from 10 to 60 without having to go around the world every five minutes looking for the thing you need for your next craft, the Doman Restoration could be seen as less valuable… but on the other hand, the Doman Restoration just requires you to show up every week with enough valuables to meet your quota, and for those who are unable to sell on the Market Board due to trial restrictions, are too scared to try and gamble on the board, or just want some Gil without having to do too much, that can be worth its weight in gold.
I love the doman enclave, they buy my money for double the price
… I have to wonder if these were "filmed" back in like, July/August, hence the /RAINY SEASON/ or, Tsuyu ;). 47:19. MAYBE XD;.
Despite the economics of them paying for you to offload your Allagan Silver Pieces for double market value making no sense, im still glad this whole questline exists.
5:42 As Slafborn mentions, the Domans had a hand in building Revenant's Toll in what it is today. We helped the Doman refugees settle in Mor Dhona here in patch 2.2, but Revenant's Toll wasn't finished until much later in the 2.x patches. The version we see nowadays is just its completed form. Back in 2.2, it was just a tavern, a few buildings, some tents, and some bare cliff faces. None of the fortifications or towers you see now.
While this isn't their homeland and you see the fruits of their labour playing through the game now well before you even see them, Revenant's Toll is a city built by Domans as much as anyone else who lives there. It is their home. Hell, some Domans have even gotten married and started families here. And now they are to leave it…
Also, anyone remember the Buduga? Those are the guys who teamed up with Magnai and his clan on the Steppe. They're also the ones who claimed Hien to do busywork for them and wanted to make him join their ranks. You've got to hand it to them for determination.
Legit, the irl time it takes to do Doman Restoration is why I assumed it wouldn’t be done here. I just thought the long break was either irl getting in the way or just Dan needing a break (both are valid so yeah). Either way, it’s fun to see it here. o7
I still use the donation box to drop off useless junk my retainers find that doesn’t sell well lmao. Also gear I don’t need until I run out of budget and need to send them in for GC seals again.
10:30 I think you do exactly one of these in the MSQ during your time in Reunion on the Azim Steppe, but that might be a side quest you have to do to get an aether current
11:10 I choose to believe that Lalafel stand on apple boxes during these… it's just the perfect mental image…
I noticed I while back that F'lhaminn wasn't attending the Rising Stones anymore. Turns out, after her daughter's departure, she quietly retired to Revenant's Toll.
I don't think she's involved in many things after the end of HW, so I like this decision.
You might be thinking by the end of the episode that, even with a literal week going by mid-episode, that change is coming to Doma very quickly. And you'd be correct. While Stormblood was current content the reconstruction effort lasted a few patches, it has since been shortened considerably in the expansions since. Which is why Durmin cleared the first 5 milestones in his first two donations.
Still, I believe it takes about 12 max donations to complete now, so about 11 weeks after you start.
Dan, you mad lad, you're actually doing the Doman Reconstruction.
It takes irl weeks to complete the Doman Reconstruction. But for a playthrough focused on story, it's so worth including. This optional content brings very satisfying closure to an ongoing story since ARR: that of the Doman refugees. Many players will (understandably – again, irl weeks) never get that satisfaction. Showcasing it like this is wonderful, and makes me very happy. Thank you for this fantastic FFXIV series, Dan!
(If I may suggest it, there is an optional questline in the Firmament that, like the Doman Reconstruction does for Doma, puts a nice bow on things in Ishgard. Thank you again!)
I generally preferred using dungeon gear drops myself. I was topped off on Grand Company seals, you see, and my other jobs were NOWHERE near being able to use any of it.
Playfriends, it's time for Charity. Desert Bus for Hope has reached $10 million lifetime donations to Child's Play Charity! But also, it's time to help Doma rebuild! This is your spoiler free lore comment!
Step one of rebuilding is going to have the people to do the job. While there are many Domans who survived the occupation, many of their most able bodied escaped to Eorzea. And in Revanant's Toll, they've built up their skills in expanding the town. The recall of the Doman Refugees will uproot their lives once again, but the call of the homeland is strong.
5:45 – So both Eorzean and Domans will answer the call. Reciprocity for the expansion of Revanant's Toll, but also strengthening the bonds between the two continents. And after all, most adventurers don't get a chance to sail to the Far East, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity!
7:50 – I'll be honest, I expected Higiri's sentiment to result in a subplot where a Doman would return to Eorzea after everything was done, having put down roots in Revanant's Toll and determined that it was their home, not Doma. That's not to say that it's impossible, travel between the two places is free for all (and easy if one can teleport to an attuned aetheryte).
It's quiz time! There's no real consequences here, but it is fun and probes how attentive you might have been.
12:10 – All 30+ year old gamers know the answer here. Myself included.
14:10 – C'mon Doware! You can't have worked along side her all this time and not written something dowm! The descriptions helps players who only mostly interact with them when exchanging goods and services. In this case, this is a bit tricky, as most players interact with the correct gal just to get level 50 max stats weapons. Her other weapons have fallen out of favor, except for fashion enthusiasts.
16:30 – This naughty carbunle is usually seen around town, with her owner searching for it. The tricky part is that the color of the carbuncle isn't indicitive of the name this time. Dan, of course, is right.
18:45 – In my opinion, the correct thing to send would be a Othardian fruit basket, but I don't know how well those ship. Hozan eventually gets the right idea. Either way Slafborn isn't a fancy guy.
22:35 – This feels less impactful for modern players. When the Domans first arrived in the game, Revanant's Toll was much less developed. The Domans have halped the town become what it is today.
27:35 – They got the thiiiiing! The thing is berets.
38:00 – In this case, "Ten Thousand" is an expression. In many East Asian languages, 10,000 is sometimes used as an "arbitrary large number".
Mechanically, there is a weekly donation limit which grows as your progress. You donate items like your gently used gear or old Allagan coins (which Durmin has been stocking up on with quest rewards), or other detritus in your inventory. And the Domans pay you a premium for it! No, the market economics don't quite add up, but a reputation grind that's based on clearing up your inventory sounds good to me! And yes, as Dan shows, you have to split the stacks before you go to the donation basket, it's a little annoying.
The progress on the Doman Reconstruction is based on the total value you've received back. As the limit increases as your progress, it can be easy to burn through the first couple of quest progressions on the first week. Given there's no real 'work' to do, the real task is usually just remembering to drop by.
45:00 – Endwalker gave us visual confirmation that buuz are large steamed buns, sometimes containing with very spicy filling.
45:50 – These disasters are after Hien due to his exploits on the Steppe, but, as is obvious, they're disasters. Hien is in no danger of being kidnapped and inducted into their tribe.
47:51 – It's always good to click on the basket until Kozakura says she will take no more donations. This cutscene was likely unlocked last week due to Durmin's large contribution. What's more, as progress goes through its sections (as they were released during the patches), the map of the area becomes more developed.
50:00 – Well now I want bao! Why am I doing this after I eat!?
Well, the Ten Thousand Stalls is complete, and the Domans have new trading partners and foodstuffs to fuel their work. But more must be done! A poor craftsman blames his tools, but at some point you've got to invest in infrastructure.
Next time: I guess we're on to Patch 4.3
These kinds of questlines are my favorite. Just like the Disciple of the Hand and Beast Tribe quests, I just like rebuilding questlines. Not only you end the threat, but you help people recover so a tragedy need not repeat.
💙
41:52 I'm the kind of person that would sit there making sure they never exceeded their budget. Not one gil over.
43:45 Are the monsters not edible?
49:33 I'll take two baskets to start, yes.
51:24 It has been too long since I had tako anything… might need to get some takoyaki…
52:52 I literally just ate, but this is making me hungry again.
55:01 He's having a time…
Now I'm wondering. Did you donate to the Shazenkai while you were also doing other stuff with Durmin that we've seen/have yet to see and the video's are cut this way? Or did you wait a week to continue this quest a little bit.
In either case, this kind of dedication is why I love these FF14 video's! It's so cool to see that your character's choices have influence on the world and not just in the way of slaying Eikons.
So this is why it took so long for Durmin to return. Well, half of why. I'm guessing the other half of why it took so long was a certain extremely grindy piece of side content on a certain island, since I can't really think of what else would take so much time besides the Doman Restoration.
