  1. This is a challenging question to phrase without sounding problematic-if it is not a spoiler, or foreshadowing some upcoming twist, or explained in side content-could someone please explain given the appearance of their father Curtis and the majority of the residents of Ala Mhigo as well as its climate, how is it that Ida and Lyse have very clear airyan physical traits when literally no one else in the region shares those collection of traits?
If it was that the character hadn't been connected to the region yet, the art design hadn't been finalized like with yugiri, or a development issue, then wouldn't it have been the ideal time to redesign Lyse to look more Ala Mhigan when the glamour dropped during her character reveal?
I don't think anyone has ever gotten in trouble for white-face. It doesn't carry the same negative stigma or evil history. I mean revealing a white character was actually coloured the whole time to escape oppression couldn't have caused any issues and even has some shaky historical precedence to draw from.

  2. The end boss of Specula Imperatoris is actually an FF6 reference, if I remember right.

My absolute favorite AI behavior is one in which Alisae, a red mage, backflips off of a boss arena.

  3. Dang, Fordola is deep in the sunk cost fallacy. She knows that even if she's the perfect loyal soldier, she'll never be accepted as anything but a savage to be mocked, but she's so desperate for that recognition that she's willing to do horrible things just for the off chance this finally gives her what she craves. She's so focused on that dangling carrot she can't see how she's being used to crush the very people she wants to save.

  4. Magitek to the left of us, magitek to the right of us, but forward the Playfriends charge! This is your spoiler free lore comment!

Castrum Abania's defenders are largely a reference to FF6's Magitek Research Facility (which Heavensward's Aetherochemical Research Facility also does). All three bosses are based on either bosses from that dungeon or frequent enemies. This also helps show the themes for Garlean new magite:k a perverse blend of flesh and machines. What's particularly distressing is that Inferno and Subject XXIV have "third eye" marks. This indicates that these enemies were once Garleans, and that the Imperial Army is increasingly using their Human Resources to lethal ends for anyone involved.

19:30 – Dan's correct here on both of the twins' characteristics. Alphinaud has different carbuncles in Heavensward dungeons, but uses moonstone carbuncle for Stormblood forward. Alisaie will help out with raising and heals if things are going poorly, as befits a Red Mage. For some of the storyline duty supports, some of the Scions will use the job "Archon", as a catch all for whatever job is needed for that dungeon (ie, Thancred will sometimes tank or be a rouge).

27:35 – It is a unusal comparison that Fordola seeks something similar to Lyse. She wants Ala Mhigans to live with dignity, with respect. It's just that she view that the Empire is unstoppable, unbeatable. So the only way to have respect is to gain internal respect from them. Zenos is giving her a shot at that, to be respected for who she is, to be the model Ala Mhigan. And Fordola is willing to discard anything for that opportunity.

The writers also went back and later retconned an additional piece of commonality between these two. Fordola has met Yda. The REAL Yda, when she was on one of her infiltration missions for the resistance. Fordola was just a girl then, and followed her. This would eventually lead to Garlean troops finding the two of them, and Yda acted betrayed at the young girl so that no one would think she was a resistance sympathizer. That fight would be the last time anyone saw Yda.

28:35 – Have you ever wondered what it's like to fight Durmin? Someone who can read your attacks, side step out of the way, knows exactly what skills and spells you're employing all before you even use them? Wonder no more.

37:30 – I'm guessing Lyse and her sister take after their mother. I guess this isn't that unusual, remember that Minfilia was Ala Mhigan as well.

41:45 – THIS is why Lyse was chosen by Conrad. Not because he thinks her the best Commander, or some kind of charismatic figure. Because she understands what Ala Mhigo really needs. Her ideas on what liberty means will ensure that Ala Mhigo doesn't go back to the bad old ways during Theoderic's reign, or becomes a land of retribution like some would hope. A new Ala Mhigo has to work for everyone. She's not the perfect person to pick up Conrad's banner, but she's got it where it counts, and she's growing into the role. Something tells me she's grown far beyond anything Curtis or Yda could have imagined.

47:55 – An Ala Mhigo that works for everyone. Even those who have been under the Empire's heel all their lives. Those who've had to serve the Empire, just to eat. To live.

Next time, we push onward. To the Lochs, and the Ala Mhigan capital!

  5. "We need more Roegadyn in the Scions, in my opinion" – Actually being a Roegadyn in the Scions, my opinion concurs. I never had to look up to talk to anyone until Gosetsu arrived, barring one-off points like Wedge riding Maggie.

  6. Is there any way to have both Duty characters and real people joining a raiding party? I only ask because while the duty characters are cool, Dan's got a ton of friends in his Dantalus Theater company who I'm sure would love to be part of Playframe…

  7. That's cool that ai characters have specific actions built into their moveset for the duties. Alphinaud making Alisaie his first priority for heals is very sweet, he's such a good boy.

  8. All three bosses in the Castrum are from FF6. The Mag Roader is a regular enemy as the party flees the magitek research center, Number 24 is a boss inside that facility and Inferno is a reskin of Number 128 which was boss of the fleeing the Magitek Research facility.

  9. I wonder if the reference to Hamilton is part of the reason so much of Stormblood just feels so hollow to me, though I haven't seen the musical, I'm given to understand that it's very mythical in its understanding of the american revolution. Rather than think of it as a complicated operation in many ways done at the urging of the wealthy (though obviously quitting the british empire is a really good thing!). Stormblood hits like half the time for me. Funny enough I think my favorite part was the Azim Steppe, so pretty!!

  10. 19:52 Yes, yes she will and it can be just a little annoying.
40:06 more Hamilton references! Raubahn and Illberd certainly did not throw away their shots.
42:28 Yes. Just plain yes. This is not my favorite expansion, but I come to appreciate it more every time I revisit it. (first time through felt a little sluggish because I had heard so many good things about Shadowbringers and was looking forward to that)
44:50 "doing a skulk" I like this phrase.

  11. Aren't all those 3 bosses from FFVI?
I'm sure you fight those three at the Imperial labs… and the magitek guy has a double that is just nasty at that weird kefka cult tower.

  12. OMG right after the dying is easy line, I paused and said, "Hey wait… isn't that from Hamilton?" And then Dan you continued and immediately answered my question. That is a good line, in both situations. In my opinion, a lot a ballyhoo is made about dying for what you believe in, but I think more focus needs to be put on living for what you believe in.

  13. Fun fact: Alisaie's penchant for just going ham with the limit breaks was not intended! Apparently the devs later said that it was a bug and they would fix it, but the players were like "But it's perfectly in character!" and they left it in.

  14. 8:40 I just kinda wish there were more normal tanks. Treaded stuff with big gun turrets.
13:31 They have plenty of practice.
21:36 It has a head bead (third eye?), like Zenos… kind of a short list of "what", long list of "who".
27:32 …I have terrible news for you: the "freedom" you would have achieved, at best, is assimilation. Which erases who you are, in at least some capacity.
    28:09 No, you won't.
29:42 You betray your people, you assault your people, you murder your people… and you run as soon as things turn against you. A coward and a traitor. At least Yotsuyu was willing to do her own dirty work, to the death. I do wonder if there's some… "redeeming" bit for Fordola, like there was for Yotsuyu.
33:57 Props to this guy. He didn't butt in, he didn't ask what was expected of him, he saluted and, presumably, got about it.
    35:12 Called it.
    37:47 Now that there's a battle cry.
    40:05 Hard truth.
40:12 I didn't! Not my jam, I'd rather read a biography. Same thing now with Oppenheimer.
47:41 I feel like Naago is more talking about survival instinct. If a group is busy kicking the teeth of well-armed soldiers in, it's a deathwish to try fighting that group.

  15. Adding on to some neat character AI for Alisaie – in the level 87 dungeon there's a boss with a mechanic where he hides and you have to search for him. Where the other Trust Avatars take a moment before finding the boss, Alisaie will just start spamming her Flèche everywhere, to no effect!
