Hey there everyone, how was your weekend?
3:12 I have been informed that tourniquet is pronounced "turn-a-kay" rather than "turn-a-kit".
However, that might be a regional difference, with the former being a British pronunciation and the later being the American pronunciation.
7:22 This hammers the fact I was pointing out last time. Anyone, literally anyone here, would be a better general than Lyse (and it so happens that M'naago is standing right there and is proving that SHE can use logic ^^). What Lyse at that point of the story does best is being a bolder and more naive warrior of light which is NOT a leader type character. At least the actual WoL listen to others.
Also being a second grade WoL is a real bad place for her character to be because either she'll be outshone by the protagonist (the literal warrior of light) or be annoying by stealing their spotlight. The only thing unique and interesting about her character nowdays is the enormous gap between what she thinks Ala Mhigo is and what the people who actually live there think it is, but this is never explored.
16:10 Aside from the calamity seen in the opening title sequence of ARR, it is mostly the 4th and 6th umbral calamities that we know the most about
The cause for the fourth one (the calamity of Earth) was the Allagan empire, as seen in part in the crystal tower raid series and many times more in the MSQ (in fact, we’ll be dealing with the fallout of that for a long time to come)
The sixth one (the calamity of water) was a result of the magi war, a war that was fought between the Scholars of Nym, the White Mages of Amdapor and the Black Mages of Mhach (all mostly Lalafell btw). Aside from the in the video mentioned void ark series, You’ll find out more about that particular part of Eorzean history in the Scholar, White Mage, Black Mage and Red Mage quest lines. What remains of Nym can be seen in La Noscea today, what’s left of Amdapor is now a dungeon in the Black Shroud and Mhach is part of the void ark quest line, as already discussed.
As for the other 4 umbral calamities, much is shrouded in mystery, and what little is to know about them, you REALLY have to dig.
The fifth umbral calamity (the calamity of ice) is an especially though nut to crack, as “The known world was frozen over” and that Miqo'te might have arrived in Eorzea from Ilsabard in the fallout of that, are literally the only things we know about it. One can surmise that with the fall of the Allagan empire, much of our ways of recording history was lost along with them, and it wasn’t until after the calamity of ice that we finally figure that out again.
I do love that game throws out wild roses the first time as a FF2 reference and then everytime the WoL (Durmin in this case) is given the option to give a password, they are also given a wrong wild rose option. Its a very dumb joke but it gets me everytime, especially cause if you do choose it people are just confused most of the time.
8:37 The short story Tales from the Storm: The Weight of a Name is a good one to read right about now. It's told from M'naago's point of view around the time Lyse and Papalymo found themselves helping the Resistance.
I just realized Lyse is dressed like Kid from Crono Cross. Was this intentional?
Playfriends, it's time to take stock of what we have left. This is your spoiler free lore comment.
2:00 – I like taking in this image. All these magitek armors, these machines of war, taken down by spear and bow and blade. And, presumably, magic. For all the terror that is Garlean machina, the Alliance are capable of holding their own, and they're getting better at it by the day.
2:40 – It's easy to forget that some members of the Alliance got their start this way. The Elder Seedseer's personal bodyguard was a Garlean conscript that was nearly left for dead at Cartenau. And now he is her fiercest defender. It would help to have more healers, though. To bad two of the Scions' conjurers are out of action.
What is amazing to me, and possibly other players, is that Lyse's couple of text boxes about this ark, Nyunkrepf's Hope, wasn't just a myth or legend. Well, legends have cropped up around the events and people of the 6th Umbral Calamity, but what Lyse imparts is 100% fact, even though this happened ~1500 years prior to Durmin's story. I had assumed this information to have been a folk tale, until Endwalker proved that this was recorded history. Nyunkrepf Nyunkrepfsyn was a Roegadyn who would become one of the 12 Archons of the 6th Umbral Calamity (The Calamity of Water). These 12 Archons were learned folks who foretold of the Calamity during the War of the Magi. Nyunkrepf was an Astrologan and prepared this vessel to save as many as he could. As he took on other stragglers during the flood, he spied a massive tidal wave bearing down on his people. In a desperate move, he cast an unprecedented teleportation spell, grabbing everyone in the region of the ship. This ark didn't arrive in the Peaks of Gyr Abania because it floated here, but because magic deposited the vessel here, safe from the floodwaters. Between the refugees he saved and others flocking to safety, the inhabitants of Gyr Abania were founded. That being said, later lore states that Nyunkrepf didn't remain in Gyr Abania. At some point, he became disillusioned with the chaos and power struggles of the people, and departed with a contingent of like minded folks. These people would take to the seas again, and this time land on an island to the northwest of Eorzea. There, Nyunkrepf and his followers would found another nation, which many of the Scions are very familiar with: Sharlyan.
As a minor note, I think some of Nyunkrepf's story might have been retconned. I think some of the information in one of the Eorzean Encyclopedia volumes contradicts this story, placing the ark closer to Dravania, and the site of the eventual Sharlyan colony, Emporium (current day Idyllshire).
26:00 – I am not used to these Hexadrones being this huge. I don't think it's a size difference with Durmin being so small, I think the later hexadrones are much smaller. I guess the new block upgrades make them more portable.
29:00 – This reminds me of descriptions of those living under totalitarian rule, where political discussions, even expressing minor disapproval, must only happen in one's own home, where it is safe from prying ears. Leaping Doe's story ephasizes that it's not just keeping that information from Garleans that is imporant, but would be Resistance members as well. "Collaboration", sometimes just to feed your family, can be just as lethal as rebellion. It's surprising there's any Resistance supporters in Radiata. What appeal is there in overthrowing your oppressors, just to install a government filled with people who think you should be strung up for your coerced contribution to the Garlean workforce?
Next time, we've got a big gun to take!
I feel that about how well XIV portrays Empire and realistically too. Even better, this doesn’t even stop at this expansion, it keeps going basically every time the Garlean Empire is involved. I get the feeling they weren’t so fleshed out in ARR days, but Stormblood definitely changed that for the better going forward, I think. It’s definitely one of the expansion’s strong points.
I do love how we help some imperial soldiers here. Not only strategically (having your own side fire a cannon at you is bound to shake up loyalties), but just showing compassion in war. We have to kill Imperials to stop imperial rule, yes, including killing those forced to fight from conquered lands, but that doesn't mean we must snuff them all out.
We learn this compassion has been extended to Imperials in the past in ARR. An example is an unfortunately unnamed Hyur Keeper of the Entwined Serpents, the Serpents that personally guard Kan-e-senna. He previously fought in the Battle of Cartenau, but as Garlean conscript. He survived the red moon falling and Bahamut's destruction, but was severely wounded. Nursed back to health in Gridania, he pledged his life to serve Gridania and protect its leader.
💙
– we will forever lament the loss of Conrad, & we must give him a proper burial as soon as we can… screw everyone else who died from the Cannon tho
– i appreciate the little detail of the Eorzean troops willing to help the injured Imperials as well, not only it shows that the Eorzean allies are here to help & not just replace one empire for the other, but also because most of the Imperials are most likely Ala Mihgans forced to work for said empire, as we saw back in Doma
– yeah i think the Flood was mentioned in the Sky Pirates arc, still wild how well it preserved
Always wondered if Radiata was a reference to Radiata Stories. Wanted to play it back when it came out, but alas, a young student didn't have money for games back then.
The "ship thing" is actually explained by it's sightseeing location text entry, and I think one sidequest.
1:29 He's not dead. He's not alright, but he's not injured.
2:08 If they're well enough to shout, they're not seriously injured. You want the quiet ones.
2:33 Nah, I'm not there.
3:15 O.O
3:47 Man, the medics are gonna looove this bunch. This guy needs a cart… or y'know, bird ride. Like Durmin's offering.
4:31 That's not how wars work. Nevermind the kind of artillery that landed near you.
7:06 I'm not sure Estinien would like being called a malfunction…
31:51 This does make me wonder if the Roman Empire is as bad as half of this or not. Relatively speaking, of course. Would being conquered by the Romans have been worse than the Gauls or Carthage? Empires are expansionistic by nature, and many have been at least one flavour of oppressive, but fictional Empires are usually the bad guys (for obvious reasons, conquest is usually frowned upon by the conquered), but you could make an Empire that is actually decent, because it's fiction.
This game makes no bones about how awful oppression and discrimination are, in all its nasty forms and insidious digs. Good storywriting right there.
