  1. Y'know, the whole "having to hide your faith so your people can stay safe, and continuing to practice it in secret, while some members of the community say that hiding your faith is equivalent to not practicing it at all" is very much the premise of the story behind Hanukkah (and other Jewish folk tales)

  4. Playfriends, the political situation of the Ruby Sea is a mess. Surely life under the Ruby Sea is better than anything they got up there? Nope, still complicated. This is your spoiler free lore comment!

The first thing we have to recognize is that if you have to ask "is that a reference?", the probability is Yes. The localization team knows exactly what they're doing. I do find it funny that, with everyone ready for the references to a certain under the sea animated film, they chose to have the quest dialogue go for a different 90s Disney film: Aladdin!

I'd like to think that MMORPG players deeply understand the Kojin motivation. They're all in it for the loot. Or Treasure.

Let's talk about this little Kojin blessing that Durmin receives in exchange for a small fetch quest. Durmin has a whole new axis of the world to explore! Swimming underwater operates very similarly to flying. Mounts may be used, and are the fastest mode of moving underwater. This enables vast areas of future content for players to explore and gather materials. Fortunately for thalassaphobes, underwater combat has not been implemented. Everything underwater is peaceful for exploration and the gathering jobs. Not that it would actually assuage anyone who has fear of deep water. Swimming also provides a new form of gathering for the Fisher job: spear fishing. Fishers now find water teeming with life and play a minigame to catch fish with a fishing gig.

Sui-no-Sato shows that the Kojin aren't the only ones living beneath the waves. The Raen Au Ra here have built a refuge away from the world, keeping themselves safe from conflict. But insulated places tend to be unwelcoming to outsiders. Being in a bubble means that their primary outside contact are with the Kojin, and folks like Durmin, Lyse, and Alisaie are rare indeed. As is revealed, Sui-no-Sato is heavy on tradition, but is ruled by the Ruby Princess. The past Ruby Princess took her realm's protection very seriously, seeing secrecy as their greatest defense. As such, those who would venture out and make their nation known were banished, never to return. But time has passed, and a new Ruby Princess sits upon the throne in her castle deep in the Turquoise Trench, Shisui of the Violet Tides. This new princess is much younger, and curious about the outside world. This scarlet haired princess wishes to know more about those above the surface of the Ruby Sea, those who stay all day in the sun… But something odd has happened. Shiosai and one handmaiden are the only members of the royal court who have departed Shisui of the Violet Tides in recent days. The Ruby Princess entertained an enigmatic visitor recently, and now she is cloistered in a private ceremony.

Isobe the Otter can be replicated with the Odder Otter minion, which is a random drop from sending a retainer out on gathering missions.

28:43 – "Please don't judge / But I'm in love with a tyrant / It doesn't irk me that she's bitchy and violent / and maybe one day / she will notice me / and gently tell me to remain silent / and I'd follow orders and be like a good boy / she may be evil, but she's also HOT" – JoCat

The FFXIV community loves to make jokes about Yotsuyu, and this has percolated all the way to the top. During Gamescom 2017, the development team ran a cosplay contest, and one particularly well executed Yotsuyu cosplayer received glowing praise for her work. And then Yoshi-P capped it off with the meme (in English): "Step on me please".

30:50 – We have a bit of Gosetsu's history here, and not one he is proud of. He has spilled blood for Garlemald, all so that he could return to Doma. How many have been subjugated to serve the Empire because of a samurai's blade? Does killing for your own oppressors just to get home mean you are trading the freedom of others for a shot at your own?

35:00 – If you're wondering, the young boy that Yugiri met was called Shun. Their meeting is elaborated in a side story (for later expansions, so spoilers abound) on the FFXIV website.

Next time! Time to deal with some Red Kojin?

  5. Upon reflection the "or something" that Lyse will occasionally add to the end of a sentence is interesting. Personally it is what has made start to grow frustrated with her as a character, she's not really a scion for her brains, and she's dealing with a lot this ex-pack often with doubts we don't have time for, or by trying to blindly charge without a plan, and the constant "or something" makes it seem like she's only half paying attention to the plot, which grated on me. With how much it pops up though I'm curious if this is a Japanese phrase that is being translated poorly, one meant as a nervous tick, that in English reads as her being careless.

  6. I was already wondering if Yugiri was from Sui-No-Sato when I saw the character designs in that place. I was not expecting to bump into her parents tho!
I hope after this whole ordeal she's able to visit her family again…

  7. Since we start this episode in the picturesque home of the Kojin of the Blue, I'd like to talk a bit about the "beast" tribes (an appellation that was dirty politics at best, and is now actually gone from the game's interfaces).

MSQ interactions with the tribal races were almost exclusively hostile in ARR, aside from a few Qiqirn traders and friendly goblins. We saw a little more integration in Heavensward; the goblins have their inclusive community in Idyllshire, and we make friends with communities of Vanu and Vath. That trend continues in Stormblood; Ananta are represented among the resistance, Kojin and Namazu are accepted sights in Kugane (despite some bias against them), and we have seen a canine race integrated into Imperial forces. It's becoming very different from the universally antagonistic picture the ARR main story paints…but even in ARR, that picture doesn't tell the whole story.

Dan has alluded to the tribal quests, but hasn't delved into them–largely because they're repetitive by nature, because they're all about gradually winning the trust of tribal factions. As we've seen with Ga Bu, not every member of a tribe is tempered, and the tribal quests see the Warrior of Light reaching out to these untempered factions. Despite their optional nature, you could make an argument that this is the real work of the Warrior of Light–not just defeating primals when they arise, but laying the foundations of a peace effort that may eventually remove the motivations for summonings in the first place.

By the end of ARR, the WoL may be godparent to a clutch of sahagin and a flight of sylphs, patron to a band of kobold misfits, honorary member of an Amalj'aa warband, and collaborator with an Ixal engineer who dreams of returning to the skies. More than that, the WoL is the link that enables these factions to unite against a common threat. Heavensward sees the WoL help the Vath in establishing their fledgling community and struggle against the influence of the Onemind, stop a Vanu civil war (and start a new dance craze), and aid the moogles in restoring a historical site dedicated to the alliance of Dragon, Man, and Moogle.

It's a sharp contrast to the WoL's role in the MSQ; the tribal quests showcase them as a peacemaker, building bridges between different peoples. And, as Dan keeps telling us, the devs don't throw away their narrative toys.

  8. By the way, remember that underwater building during the intro cinematic for Stormblood? That is the setting of a completely optional dungeon unlocked through a quest in Sui-no-Sato that you only need to do if you want to get access to flight in the Ruby Sea.
