Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers – #39 – The Tempest

I’m sure Emet-Selch’s invitation to get in the sea was merely playful metaphor.

  1. Man it feels kinda wierd now that we are in patch 7.0 meanwhile Dan recorded this around 6.5 because he still has Plunge instead of Shadowstride in his DRK hotbar.

    (I miss Plunge.)

  2. And we arrive to the area with one of the best songs in the game.
Ryne's first comment is 100% on the money. If you play the game, sometimes, it's just worth it to go down there and look out into the distance.

  3. I have to be honest. It's incomprehensible to me that people keep calling ShB the best expansion when it does keep making you do chores for native tribes in every area, multiple tribes even in one of them, repeatedly, even when on a tight timelimit like Durmin's light corruption. They are not interesting, they are not fun, and they are like 50% of the story here. And the rest is just… a somewhat better version of ARR. Il Mheg was a lowpoint, for this reason, and being that this is right when the story is building up to the climax, stopping to do tourism (because that's what it is) with the Ondo is another low point. For like the entire story of the game. The writing in "side content" (rolequests, raids) for the expansion is great, but the main story is quite weak. Even ARR didn't make you waste so much time while so incredibly pressed for time

  4. The Tempest is absolutely gorgeous!
And I'm surprised that there's actual physical evidence that the Ascian's old home existed.
It must both be a bit of relief but also painful for them to have a reminder of what once was.

  5. 0:23 "Side things that are mandatory"… what? Then they aren't "side" things any more.
3:12 I'm not saying I'm not enjoying it… because if I wasn't, I wouldn't be typing anything, but as good as this is, I do certainly lack your level of enthusiasm for the story.
    5:48 That's no island…
8:41 One day, a very specific song won't play through my head at the mention of "Bismarck"… today, as you probably guessed, is not that day. At least it's a good song.
10:19 Not a criticism, but Dan, why only talk for Bismarck and not both of them? They're both speaking Gaelic(?).
11:07 She shrank again… and left her royal regalia behind.
13:05 Somehow, the music in my head is just as fitting.
14:09 Oh, just give it a few minutes.
14:44 You guys might want to move, I don't think the dock is gonna last much longer.
21:51 I really like the design of that one.
39:14 I feel like this is a quest type better suited to single player games. Here, I'd probably just look it up without trying or something. It's not what I would have signed up for. Like the treasure maps in Skyrim, I love those… but those are optional things that I can do over a long period of time, when I feel like it.

  6. So the funny thing here is that the fish people are just the normal people trying to live day to day life and we, by din of Durmin being a sneeze away from exploding into the 18th Angel, are the Eldrich Horror beyond comprehension.

  7. ….oh I remember that "City of the Ancients" quest. While I agree with Dan that the objective is pretty unique and cool, I was awful at it. I remember it taking me forever to find the right damn building. Still, I enjoy the Tempest. The music is relaxing, and it's got some fun lore.

  8. I did not expect this. Here I was thinking The Tempest would just be a final dungeon not a whole zone. And it's a majestic zone at that, the BGM is probably adding a point to the expansion by itself, that soothing gentle guitar alongside an underwater expanse. Gosh I'm a sucker for underwater area's in games.
I'm glad we finally remembered to call Feo Ul, she deserves it and finally gets her day (asin getting the thing she really wants which is for us to call on her). I'm also excited to see even more of the Asscian angle, that architecture at the end looked beautiful.

  9. – oh Urianger, by all means please do entertain us with the gift of your attempts at swimming
    – because of course Y'shtola can see it with her own eyes
    – wow, they gave up quick…"welp the Whale said no"
    – Feo Ul showing up to the Final Fantasy theme
    – wait, Primal Bismark is White as Marble, is mindless, & only lives to feed upon aether… did the Vannu Vannu accidentally summon a Sin Eater?
    – Ascian Concrete!
    – yeah figuring out Landmarks as a way to find the Quest area is neat but it would wear out its welcome incredibly quick

  10. Playfriends, we're back on track with the MSQ. This is your spoiler free lore comment.

11:50 – I guess Bismarck recognizes the succession of Feo Ul to Titania.

13:15 – We've encountered a Bismarck before, and it was also a large whale. It's possible both of them take their names from an older entity, or if somehow this fae creature is somehow the original namesake. But either way, they continue to magical whale theme of Bismarck throughout the Final Fantasy series.

17:00 – Welcome to the final zone of Shadowbringers! We're back under the sea again!

19:15 – I think he gets you a boat. Storyline wise, it's best to think of yourself as stuck down here. Mechanics wise, you can go anywhere you want in the game.

25:15 – We do what we're best at! Quests!

33:19 – The Shoebill is there. It's a bit to the left of the Clionid Larva.

35:45 – They don't scratch. They survive under the water. They don't corrode. Life has grown around them. And Y'shtola can see that they are like nothing on the First.

38:40 – I do love these mystery type quests. Usually they're part of a unique quest chain, like ARR's treasure hunt, or Stormblood's murder mystery. I like that this one is integrated into the MSQ. To prevent players from simply wandering forever, this part of the zone is relatively restricted and the sparkles of the survey point will draw players to it.

While we're working to get the Ondo to warm up to our team, this isn't to say that Bismarck's breath hasn't caused them considerable problems. There is a side quest line in the Ondo village that reveals that the air pocket threatens to end their civilization. Their queen is laden with eggs, prepared to birth them to be kept safe by her subjects. But without the water, she lacks the essential buoyancy to do this safely. She's stuck in her residence, unable to move, unable to feed. The side quests help the Ondo with caring for her, as well as providing various items from the surface that will assist with her birthing. It's the least you can do, since your intervention threatens to end an entire generation of their people, if not worse.

Next time: We discover why the Ondo have been awaiting emissaries of the Ancients.
