  1. Dwarves who say "lali-ho" were indeed present in Final Fantasy I, although the aforementioned catchphrase was lost in translation in the NES version, and for whatever reason became just "hurray."

  2. – is not quite La-hee but this will do

    – ok so building combat airships is too much, but a giant robot to pull down a mountain, now that's clearly the most practical

    – kinda disappointed that they don't let you say you're the Warriors of Darkness; but answering you're Alphinaud's assistants is not entirely wrong either

    – is pretty funny, yet on brand that Yoshi-P would make buildings only the Lalas could enter

  3. Lali-ho! The Dwarves are very fun. The lalafel-exclusive houses were something I was looking forward to in Shadowbringers, so it was a bit sad seeing it only be a single house. It was still wild to me when they revealed at a Fanfest that the Dwarves were the First's Lalafels. I also enjoy taking literally every opportunity I can to tease anyone in the Scions. Alphinaud deserves a good ribbing, and I love his expression.

  4. WOW ok I never noticed this before, but that music that's playing during the solo duty at the end….that's from Syrcus Tower, back in A Realm Reborn. Fitting, as we have the Crystal Exarch with us, some master of the very same Crystal Tower we explored all the way back then….

  5. Lali-Ho Playfriends! Time to visit some folks who Durmin will find weirdly familiar. And they will find him oddly familiar too. This is your spoiler free lore comment!

1:45 – Sometimes inspiration comes from the oddest statements.

2:35 – It isn't infrequent that your mind races off towards solutions for even the most fantastical problems, even if you don't wish it to. But Chai-Nuzz was once an expert Talos engineer, and he's going to be getting some help…

5:17 – Sometimes all those sidetracked moments come in handy. When you've grinded out reputation with friends in high and low places, you can be helped when the time is critical. Mass Effect players should be well acquainted with this turn of events. In a way 'Alphinaud and his Assistants' has done something here that has proven impossible back on the Source: They have united all of the peoples of the world in a single endeavor. They will be building a Talos to end the Lightwarden threat. A Talos of Deadalus design. No pressure, Chai-Nuzz.

9:20 – Thankfully, failing any of the interactions here simply results in sending you out of the cutscene to start over. And the game doesn't tell you that all of the prompts have 2 positive answers. The sole wrong answers tend to be very obvious.

19:35 – To me, this exchange is beautiful. An honest apology that recognizes that they've done harm. The wronged isn't forced to accept this apology, and it's understood that conflicted feelings are the norm. But both recognize that forward movement is needed. Both move the relationship past hostility and to accomplish a larger task. Nothing is strictly settled here, because feelings and history are complicated. It's nice to see a story recognize that healing doesn't immediately start after an apology and that reconciliation shouldn't be expected after an apology.

23:40 – Dan is correct, the term "Lali-ho" is as old as Final Fantasy itself. It was first used by the Dwarves found on Mount Duergar (also known as the Dwarves' Cave) back in the original Final Fantasy. If you don't remember it, that might be because it's been localized as "Hurray" or "Rally-ho" in English versions. FF4 had the Dwarves of the Dwarven Castle use the greeting, while the ones from Tomra (the namesake for this Dwarven village) use "Hi-Ho". The dwarves in FF5 and FF9 also use Lali-Ho!

26:09 – You might have noticed the odd comment here, "What happened to your helm?". If you're not playing a lalafell, you won't hear this comment. While not wearing a helm as a Lalafell doesn't restrict your access to Tomra, it will get some comments from the locals. As you might remember, Dwarf is the term for Lalafell like folks on the First, and most residents have identified Durmin as a Dwarf. And as you might gather from the comment, there are two things that are essential to Dwarven culture. Helms and Beards! Well, and Ale. Three things essential to Dwarven culture: helms, beards, and ale. And yes, that applies to all dwarves. Including the ladies.

32:15 – If you attempt to enter this building as something other than a Lalafell, it prevents you and provides an error message that "Only Lalafells may enter this area". While these homes in Upper Kholusia are the only area race restricted in the entire game, this may be changing very soon! MTQcapture has posted a video from her Dawntrail Media Tour event where she encountered another one of these areas in the upcoming Dawntrail expansion! She even used a Fantasia to gain access to this secret zone! It seems the devs are dedicated to adding small Lalafell-only easter eggs.

37:55 – In this sequence, The Crystal Exarch shows off some of his impressive skills. Depending on the roles you selected back at Holminster Switch, this might be your first time seeing his capabilities. First, he fights similar to a Black Mage, using spells with a long cast time. But he's not just good for Magical DPS. You'll see him using the Healer skill "Rescue" on Korutt to get him out of a jam, and then in the next combat section he casts healing spells. In addition, the golden line connecting him and Korutt is a Paladin's ability Cover, which redirects damage to the Paladin. This shows all three of the jobs The Crystal Exarch can cover at Holminster Switch: Black Mage for DPS, White Mage for Healer, and Paladin for Tank (He conjures a shining sword and shield of glowing aether for this role). In addition you see him using a Black Mage limit break at 42:23 to dispatch sin eaters. A man who can do it all!

Next time: Mining the Earthseed and I talk about an old Dwarven grudge.

  6. 32:30 – For a moment, I was really hoping Dan was going to say "There are many players, who are not Lalafel that have not seen what is inside this building, and to them I say… try out a fantasia, I'm not spoiling it!"

  7. Final Fantasy Etiquette: "You get a Lali-ho, you give a Lali-ho!"

Not sure if this is a community thing or just something I do, but when I join a party and someone gives me a Lali-ho, you better believe I'm stowing my "Hello" and giving a "Lali-ho" right back!

Also thank you so much, Dan, for showing the inside of that building! I'm basically as tall as it's possible for a player to be in this game so I've been curious for years!

  8. The Dwarves! I had lots of fun with them, they have some great moments. Of course, I only remember them from FFIX (the most recent instance of short armored folk who say Lali-ho!, I never played 5), but I’m usually always glad to see them. Given that they are this worlds lalas, I was afraid something dreadful had happened to them in this reality, but no, they’re just kinda keeping to one area (with a notable exception).

The Chais are great, both of them- Dulia is just delightful, and for all of Nuzz’s complaints and anxiety, it’s clear that he is too curious if this is even possible to say no, particularly in the face of his wife’s disappointment!

  9. This episode title made me really happy. I've been thinking about the FFIV dwarves off and on through this whole series, hoping they would eventually make an appearance. I didn't know how ubiquitous they were in the other early games, but Tomra specifically is a place you visit in FFIV.

  10. Alternate title: "In Which Chai-Nuzz Creates a Great Deal Of Work For Himself." This section is the reason the fanbase loves Dulia-Chai. She's such a loving person. A bit of an idiot, but as long as she's not hugging you that's an easy enough thing to overlook.

Poor Feo Ul… and also DORFS.

  11. Wait, did… did the Exarch just quote CID GARLOND?! Wh…. I mean, I kinda figured he must be from the source, but that's some nonsense. Well, okay, not nonsense, but certainly FASCINATING.

  12. 2:47 Give an engineer a problem…
    5:36 "Oh, nobodies, really."
6:07 … of course she buys it.
7:51 Y'shtola said "go". You'd best not waste time, she's very efficient.
8:24 Unrelated to the dialogue: the track in the background is High Treason. If you want to avoid spoilery videos, look for "大逆" when searching.
8:35 You're an *engineer*! Nothing's impossible, it just takes time and resources. You're only pressed for time, and with all the hands you'll be getting, that shouldn't be an issue.
8:48 Well, at least he doesn't take to liquid courage.
10:50 Where's the "if we don't, we never get rid of sin eaters." option?
12:17 The Scions specialise in absurd, borderline impossible plans that, even when they inevitably don't go according to plan, shake out in the end. It's a thing adjacent to plot armor.
    16:14 <obligatory Castlevania reference>
21:35 "Go find a small boulder's worth of specific ore." Sir, this isn't Minecraft.
    22:07 With the Exarch's secrets… I don't like this line.
22:55 So why did we need specific ore for the Talos for the miners?
24:12 Most importantly, they all seem to have beards.
    25:08 Love #3.
39:43 This feels like one of those times where being a tank is a chore but dps is doing fine. Durmin's trying to get aggro, but dps doesn't need aggro.
    40:37 What a suspicious non-answer.

  13. I once tried taking one of my roe friends to the lala house. I was fully expecting the game to make them get down on all four, and crawl inside.
I don't know which would be funnier, lala-exculsive content? Or crawling animation for everyone else?

  14. Delights me that there is lala-specific "where's your helm?!" dialog with the dwarves. I suppose there would have to be – anyone who's done the healer quests for ShB knows what's up.
