  1. I was VERY skeptical about Asmon, but he's playing this game with a more open mind than anyone could have expected. The fact he cleared fucking COILS min iLvl, (whether he got semi-carried or not) is fantastic. Sure he's a bit brasher than most people like these days, but he's certainly an entertaining dude.

  2. I have to say… one of the reasons why I don't get the mentorship thing (which I could have had for about half a year now), is because of the poor reception of mentors in-game.

Also… regarding commendations, I have wanted to see a DIS-commendation system added to the game for a long time now. It might be a tangible enough means to encourage some few players to improve their gameplay or behavior.

  3. I highly recommend a few things for SE to do regarding the mentor system:
    – Change the crown into a watering can
    – Remove the extremes from mentor roulette or add a version without them
    – Implement a Hall of the Intermediate, building on the Hall of the Novice, that teaches newcomers the various bits of 'language' the game has, like stack markers, line-stack markers, 'get-away-from-others' markers, environmental effects etc.
    – Implement a Mentor commendation system where only sprouts and returnees get to commend a helpful mentor, regardless of how they got queued up. Reaching a certain number of mentor comms would then unlock vanity items like personal effects, minions, titles, mounts. I think it's fair for people who show intrinsically good behaviour to be awarded vanity items, something that folks can covet. It would also be a fair reward, then.

My personal gripe with mentor roulette is the inclusion of extremes. I would absolute spam it to help newcomers do their duties, because despite the massive influx of new players, some of them still see 15-30 min queue timers. But because extremes are in there, and because I have my reasons to not do extreme content sync, I avoid mentor roulette for the most part. And I HATE that.

I'll be helpful in the NN when I can, and I notice it's appreciated. But in peak time, I just can't enter it with how many 'mentors' are in there and it's always maxed out. So I can't always reach sprouts that I want to assist and the roulette that should let me help newcomers progress makes me actively avoid it. I believe the things I mentioned above will help newcomers, returnees and mentors alike towards a more positive situation.

  4. The game almost fell apart imo actually during Stormblood. Most of my friends and I HATED that expansion. Almost my entire friends list was offline during that time. Thankfully Shadowbringers was extremely good.

  5. Haven't done mentor roulette because I haven't unlocked every single thing in game, and don't know which things I'm missing, since they're marked as ??? and have been since heavensward…

I'd love a mentor system like in some other games where you take 2-3 students under your wing and just teach them rather than what the mentor system currently is. Add a graduation for when someone feels ready to go it alone to free up one of the student slots again. No rewards needed, just a more private/smaller circle of people you have to deal with.

It'd be a lot more personal, less confusing with people giving opposing advice and it'd be harder for people who just want to be mean to use the system, since people wouldn't want to be stuck with someone that's just being unhelpful.
