I swear, I put out one fire and random elves start lighting three more out of spite.

  1. Ah we finally meet Hilda.

Pretty much every sapphic woman I know loves her, including myself. I wonder why…

(note: I do not actually wonder why.)

  2. So a Lalafell, an Elezen, and a mongrel walk into a bar. None of them expected the Ishgardian Inquisition.

Charibert de Leusignac is possibly one of the more interesting of the Heavens' Ward. He is intrinsically tied to fire- he had been orphaned by fire, and was put into a priest's orphanage in the Brume. There he learned to read and write, and spent his youth dug into holy scriptures and governances. He was particularly invested in the arcane, and found his calling in conjuring flames. He is so adept with fire that he can melt the wax of a letter without singing the paper.

He would be recommended for the Tribunal, but unfortunately his childhood orphanage was gutted by a fire. During his run as a knight, Charibert would perfect his skills with fire on his prisoners, and his skill with magic would become unparalleled. This adroitness would lead him a seat in the Archbishop's guard, and make him First Inquisitor.

As First Inquisitor, he oversaw the practices and methods of other inquisitors below him (we meet one of them, Cyr Blyme, in the Heavensward Hildibrand questline.) Mayhap his greatest punishment against someone was to the previous Archimandrite, Vaindreau de Rouchemarde, who was suspected for heresy and fought in combat. He tried to first boil Vaindreau in his armor, but when he pushed through that, Charibert would then leave him nothing but ash (I will mention what they actually fought about later.)

    Additional comments;

1:04 Customary tea for Durmin. So nice.

2:39 Here is a good question: if Estinien has one eye of Nidhogg, and both Nidhogg's eyes have been pried away from him, then where is the other eye?

5:47 A man working with Ascians, driven towards manipulating the peoples' fears. Who wants to also kill Durmin for some reason. Hm…

6:44 Haurchefant's "wut" face still amuses me.

14:01 Aymeric's flinch and grimace much earlier when Durmin and Alphinaud talked to him that one time wasn't just for flair. He was not blind to Ishgard's issues, just unaware of the truth as with all other Ishgardians. So when an idealist hears the news that Ishgard was built on lies and that men have the potential to turn into dragons in their veins, it is that idealism that drives him towards a reckless decision.

37:26 Hilda, my beloved. Actually, she is a sour character for the developers, as with her appearance would spark many, many questions about if there can be playable mixed races. Children of mixed race are incredibly rare, as interracial conception is seen as taboo amongst the people, and even then it's not guaranteed the child would actually be born. We have seen a previous half-breed in Arenvald, who's a hyur with garlean blood back at the Waking Sands. Now we meet Hilda, who's a hyur with elezen blood.

    – SICKNESS MUST BE PURGED.

(Edit # I genuinely don't remember but it's all grammar changes and slight revisions)

  3. …y'know, it occurs to me that, while Estinien was going all draconian-Doomguy, it's a good thing he remembered to keep his mouth tightly shut once the bloodletting started. After all, only (as Alphinaud put it) 'a single sip of draconic blood' would have been required for things to go very wrong indeed.

  4. Heavensward was already good but the events of this episode feel like such a turning point in the level of storytelling. It turns from a fairly straightforward good vs evil into something far more muddled. Estiniens monolouges really highlight the difficulty in determining what us right and wrong and how we as people deal with that. Also, I am very excited for fridays episode.

  5. Today, Playfriends, your spoiler free lore comment is going to talk about biology. Because I know some of your are wondering.

But first! Episodes since Estinien has taken a bath: 1

The Archbishop shows that the Dragonsong War isn't over. A war doesn't end just because one side stops fighting. The Holy See will fight on, even if Nidhogg is dead.1000 years of war doesn't end abruptly.

Lucia brings up the first rumors of Aymeric's parentage. This rumor, if true, places him in juxtaposition to Haurchefant. While Haurchefant is recognized by House Fortemps, and was raised alongside his legitimate brothers, Aymeric was handed off to House Borel. Haurchefant has received the training and responsibilities befitting a scion of House Fortemps. Aymeric has fought tooth and nail for his position in the Temple Knights, shaking off any rumors of his lineage to become Lord Commander on his own merit.

And now for biology! In the world of FFXIV, all playable peoples, and some of the non-playable ones, are effectively subspecies of the same species. All of the peoples can produce viable offspring with one another. The child of mixed parentage will typically be the same as their mother. Hilda shows that these children will sometimes retain some small traits of their father, such as her Elezen ears.

Of course, while biology shows that everyone is compatible, social norms sometimes get in the way. Hilda shows a further version of an illegitimate child. Rather than taken in by her father, or placed with another family, Hilda was rejected and has lived in poverty. She has taken all of the pain in her life, and wields it like a knife. But she's far more deadly with her carbine, a product of Ishgard's Skysteel Manufactory..

Next time, Durmin assaults the heart of the Ishgardian Orthodox Church: The Vault.

    New voice actor:
Jaye Jacobs, of Holby City, as Hilda

  6. -this was a double "wow, they can swear" moment, i don't really FF14 dropping any modern-day swearword
-oh yeah, this is honestly one of the most sensical versions of the Evil Church FF has done…. can't say the trope is unjustified
9:19 LMAO that Heretic was so disappointed by the war with the dragons ending… granted, yeah most of it was caused by Nidhogg's rage but I'm sure there has to be at least one other dragon who's also mad so not sure how over it is for them

  7. Head of House Fortemps: "Don't do that, it's treason!"
Basically everyone else: "Treason it is. Let's go do a treason."
    Love it.

EDIT: I think I'm gonna like the Mongrel. Maybe not as much as Y'shtola, but, and I mean this in a good way, the Mongrel is best bitch.

  8. Final Fantasy X-2: after a calamity that lasted centuries, your protagonist lost the power that made her special, the world didn't get better because people are no longer afraid of a common enemy and each faction wants their ideal world… but the story we follow is a fanfic about searching for a dead boyfriend, starring many goofy OCs and clichés about love and friendship.
Heavensward: Ends the tragedy that lasted centuries and despite letting you control an almighty hero, things get realistically worse because people are no longer afraid of a common enemy and each faction wants their ideal world, the focus is a group of "romantic reckless fools" who want to avoid another tragedy… but how?

Sometimes, what separates a bad story from a good one is just focus.

  9. So, Fun Facts about Hilda since shes rocked up here;

Shes kinda a problem for the writers and devs. As far as im aware, Hilda is the single, only confirmed Half Elezen/Hyur in the game – indeed, the only crossbreed of any form in the game. She alone has genetic parents of two different species. While there are several other adoptive family groups that cross species line (Minfilia the Hyur and F'lhaminn the Mi'qote, Pippin the Lalafell and Raubahn the Hyur), no other interspecies romance (Of which there appear to be plenty) seems to have produced a child, let alone half breeds.

(There are two exceptions; 1) Garleans and Hyurs can produce offspring. Pure-Blood Garleans are specifically said to be different to Hyurs, despite appearances. Your mileage may vary. 2) Some background lore/religious tales speak of cross-species progeny, but these remain mystical even in-game.)

When quizzed about Half Breeds at a fanfest some years ago, Yoshi-p reacted with a pained look and explained that while Hilda does exist, she is unique simply because its a bit of a pain to make every species have a half-breed, so from this point on they simply dont address it again, both to save on dev teams time and effort. I believe that if there were ever to be any more cross species characters, they would solely be NPCs.

Wherever that means that half breeds are canonically possible and simply dont appear in game, whether its some kind of "All offspring are of the mothers race" or whether it is simply impossible to produce offspring and Hilda is some kind of statistical outlier is up to the fans to decide.

  11. Ah the Jeweled Crozier pops up again! The first time it pops up in dialogue, the last way you say it is how I say it, but I think honestly either way works depending on dialect. I knew we'd be running into the Jeweled Crozier again, so I'm glad I mentioned it a while back, among, I'm sure, other commenters.

  12. 11:56 "How did you turn your bow into a light saber?!" Those purely-glow weapons are from The Palace of The Dead, some optional ARR content! They're surprisingly reasonable to get ahold of for how distinctive they are. "Aetherpool Grip" is the item related to obtaining them.

  13. The attempted assasination of Nanamo ul Namo was where I knew this game was going to be great, but the Vault is where it became the greatest Final Fantasy. I'm both so excited for and dreading the next episode, but no spoilers!

  14. I was absolutely livid when those two thugs were harassing Tataru. I really wanted to make them eat my fists, and I still haven't fully forgiven them by the end if the Dragonsong War.

  15. My only comment this time is that the illegal herbs do indeed exist, just ask around Limsa and you'll find a proprietor or two, notably in the Astrologian questline. I would also recommend looks up the descriptions of Skybuilder's Hemp Grade 3.

  16. It seems with every episode of this series, I bounce between the extremes of “ugh, this is why I don’t play MMOs” and “ohmigosh a chubby chocobo follower, make an account now , I MUST HAVE HIIIIIM!!”

  17. I'm just saying if I was up to no good and a guy who communes with giant crystal life forces and heads of state, slays monsters, gods, people's idea of gods and feckin' ageless dragons on the regular, if he came up to me and was like "Here bud, enough of that, yeah?". I would stop with whatever dasterdly world domination shenanigans I was getting up too right then and there, that is just common sense, I like my shins.
