Final Fantasy XIV: Before the Fall (2.5)

We arrive at the final story patch of the base game and at LAST the giant dragon and airship from the cutscene at the beginning becomes relevant!

  1. On lore: Mirke's Menagerie is a wonderful little compilation of in-game and lore book quotes. I think you would really like it.

On storytelling: FFXIV's big strength over GW2, which I think you've said before WP, is both the amount of time given to dialog and cutscenes and story, and then also the constant reiteration of what's going on. I even noted it repeatedly in this one episode – the scions tell you what's what c o n s t a n t l y to make sure you, the player, are following along. And that's a good thing! There's a lot happening sometimes, and there are often (always?) multiple storylines happening, which can be a lot to follow after a full JRPG worth of play time.

And I think the little extra care FFXIV takes really shows in this case. We do care about Moenbryda. We do care that Urianger cares. It's just framed right, and we're given the chance to know these characters. It's however many years later and I still don't care about Marjory to be honest, and I wouldn't have remembered Belinda existed. They were such nothing characters for me. I had the same with my mentor in the Vigil… uh… Forgal? Is that his name? I can't remember if it is or not, and I don't care. He wasn't interesting and I didn't know him long. That said, it's been really great to see Janthir Wilds doing better with the storytelling and adding details. I really hope Anet keeps on that.

Moenbryda thinking of Urianger in her final moments hits even harder after having played Endwalker.
Make sure not to forget about her like I almost did during my time playing it! There's some great story moments to look forward to.
