  1. It's time for another Final Fantasy Friday question: if our character/avatar/Durmin da Great didn't exist, who would be the protagonist of Final Fantasy XIV?

Have a spectacular weekend, and God Bless 😇✝️

  2. This little side quest with Tataru used to be longer, but was trimmed down when they shortened the quest chain. Tataru seeking a new side job is still story relevant, however, so they didn't remove it entirely. It also is a continuation of the tradition Thancred started in Scions changing jobs during the story.

  3. The fact that there are so many Scions in the running for best Scion is one of my favorite parts of this game. They did such a great job with all of the characters. All of the recurring characters are so fleshed out an likeable – there are few that are weak or one-note.

Heck, even the few that are weak or one-note still have their charm and interesting points. Compare that to someone like Amarant from FF9. You know, that guy you forgot existed until just this moment?

  4. As Durmin goes Dragonslaying, your spoiler free lore comment is here to help clean up the mess!

I honestly love The Steps of Faith, for likely the same reasons that it feels so familiar to Monster Hunter players: it's fundamentally different than the usual FFXIV fare. Trials are usually being stuck in an arena with some big nasty trying to kill the party. In The Steps of Faith, the vitality of your party is a footnote in the Dravanian plans. There is traditional enrage timer. The enemy has an objective, your job it to stop it. This does mean that there are fewer traditional mechanics to deal with, and the boss doesn't abide by the usual enmity rules. But honestly, few duties rate as high on spectacle as stopping a massive dragon who is marching on the gates of a city.

24:35 – I love that Thancred is having to endure this. it's very "day after Valentines in Persona". Although it seems that most of these ladies are more interested in scrapping with each other than delivering vengeance on our rogue. One is even trying to spirit him away from the fray in her arms! It does, however point out one big issue with the Rising Stones: this isn't a secret headquarters. Everyone knows where the Scions conduct their business.

And we finally come to the culmination of Tataru's endeavors to expand her job. After trying her hand at being a miner, a songstress, a juggler, and now an arcanist (among others), Tataru demonstrates one of her best traits: bouncing back from setback. Tataru will pull through, and the Scions will still need their receptionist. One bit of trivia is that Tataru's little song references many abilities that carbuncles used to be able to cast on their own, but have since been removed.

And as a slight spoiler: Tataru will soon forget these days of ill fitting jobs. Her talents will shine as she becomes one of the most invaluable members of the Scions.

  5. I'm a little sad they trimmed the questline with Tataru down, it's one of my favourite parts of post-ARR. It really endeared me to Tataru more than I already was.

Originally, if you weren't aware, she started out by trying to become a miner in order to help with the Scions funds (and yes that means Tataru in a mining outfit which is ADORABLE), before giving up and trying to become an Arcanist. It's a real shame that part has been trimmed so heavily now, as it was a really nice little change of pace from all the politicking and battles going on.

  6. TATARU BEACH EPISODE LETS GO

Anyways, this trial is really annoying (things can go really south if people aren't working together well, especially prior to 5.3), but shows the wide diversity of dragons really well. Actually, dragons are really, really adaptable, evolving from the small and dimunitive dragonets that hatch from eggs (we'll see them later, they're really, really cute.)

Vishap here is a Wyrm, adapted towards a standard development and size increase – he's a rare case of one appearing in the game. The Horde Commander that Durmin fought earlier is a Lesser Dragon, adapted towards ambulation, or movement. There are the standard Dragons, which are what Vishap grew from; carapace dragons (the "armored dragons"), evolving from the Lesser Dragons via increasing its scale hardness; and wyverns, evolving from the dragonets that specialize in flight. There are even Aevises, indicating that there might be some heretics helping out the horde, and both Biasts and Dragonflies that are connected with the Dravanian horde. This growth period takes time and is influenced by the dragon's surroundings.

So in essence, dragons are basically Pokemon due to the differences in build that they can go through, as well as how adaptable they are.

Tataru's beach episode is one of my favorite sidequests in the game. When I did ARR blind on my main and got to the part where Tataru tried to become an Arcanist, I smiled as I too started out as an Arcanist with that particular character.

  7. I remember getting to Tataru learning how to be an Arcanist and thinking that that questline would have a different starter Job based on whatever the player’s starter job is seeing as my starter job was also Arcanist. Alas, I was incorrect on that but I get why. Much simpler to pick one to be story relevant and make that one only lmao.

    Edit: autocorrect stop helping ajdhsha

  8. There's not a lot of in-game lore of just what a carbuncle is, apart from an arcanist creating it with a portion of their own aether.

My personal headcannon is that Tataru really doesn't have the will, the intent, to intentionally hurt things. Those cute little sea rats by the crates… she didn't want to hurt them, they're just doing their own thing.

The result is that her carbuncle, born of her own aether and perhaps a bit of her own soul, likewise couldn't really bring itself to hurt them. And so instead… it ran away.

  9. German and old german doesn't have dental fricatives (the endlish th sound) so Th should just be an aspirated t sound. Also says that in the forum post by koji fox

  10. I started watching these Patch videos about three or four weeks after you started posting them, and I finally caught up. Just wanted to say that I appreciate your thumbnail designs, as not only are they simpler to do than something specific for each episode, but they avoid showing spoilers. Sure, the titles might be spoiler-y, but starting the patches and seeing there will be a "Louisoux" episode could mean anything, but a thumbnail showing the character immediately ruins the surprise. I hadn't considered how this helps people just catching up.

  11. Durmin and Tataru sitting in a tree… XD

This has been a great refresher on the ARR story and I must say it is much more barable when you can watch and don't have to do all the running around yourself! Thank you for making this series!

  12. Vishap can be hit by all the dragonkillers. However, only the first one is free, after that you need to use those snares you were wondering about to bind him so he doesn't fly off. It's not terribly relevant in the current state of the fight, but if you missed even one on release, you were probably going to fail the trial unless your normal DPS was excellent rather than just solid.

  13. Hah, I didn't even know there were mechanics, I've only done Steps once and I literally just stood under the dragon and poked it with my pointy stick until eventually it died because I'm guessing my party killed it for me xD

  14. A small note about the Steps of Faith trial!
Originally, the fight was considerably harder, and a perfect execution would still reach as far as the final ward. Specifically, the amount of damage players dealt was pretty insignificant, and most of the damage to Vishap had to be done with the cannons and Dragonkillers, and missing even one meant failure.
Also notice the point where Vishap dodges the Dragonkiller? He'll always dodge it after the first one if he isn't trapped by the Snare first. Gotta wait until he's charging Landwaster, bind it down and then hit he Dragonkiller.

  15. 31:00 Fun fact, this is one of the few branching dialogue in the game that have more than two variants.

If you have already completed that job quest on Arcanist, Thubyrgeim will say exactly what you see on the video: "Remember the test you already did? Go supervision her".

If you have not yet unlocked Arcanist, she will give out a brief explanation of what an Arcanist do, and tell you to check it out. IIRC, it also means that if you want to try it, you are welcome.

However, if you have Arcanist unlocked, but for any reason have grabbed this very specific job quest but not yet finished it, she will tell you to "take the chance to finish the test too".

Unfortunately, because of how New Game+ works, you can't see the third dialogue option unless you either run the Arcanist NG+ while going through this part of the MSQ for the first part, or you need to actually have not finished that job quest on Arcanist while NG+ the MSQ.
