Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn – #50 – Shiva

I’m beginning to suspect we understand primals slightly less than we thought.

  1. Ah, Shiva… while she does fall a bit into the ‘sexy lady primal’ mould that can get rather tiring, she’s good fun story-wise (as we’re already starting to see), and I do quite enjoy her hair-icicle-crown thingies

  2. By the by! After the fight, Ysayle was paraphrasing one of the lines from Answers, the theme used in the trailer for 2.0 (‘Look to those that walked before, to lead those who’ll walk after’). This is not the last time we’ll see that sort of lyrical reference, by a long shot – it’s always fun to try and spot them

  3. I think the moment where Iceheart repeats Hydaelyns words to us, showing she too is being guided by her, and giving voice to my own concerns about being a blind follower, was when I became tempered by this game.

  4. 57:03 Do you have, like, a constitution in mind? Something where any would-be kings, or queens, or merchant princes would need to work hard to find all the loopholes? Because if not, I see a gaping hole in this plan.

  5. Man, every time I do Shiva I always stop for a bit to groove on her theme, Oblivion. I do love Ysayle as a character though – this was the part where they really start making good enemies, ones with motivations you can understand and relate to, even if you still must fight.

  6. Ah, and a proper introduction to Lucia! You may notice that, so far, she’s just about the only non-elezen in any position of note in Ishguard or it’s outposts. What’s less noticeable because she’s currently surrounded by giraffes is that she’s remarkably tall – not necessarily relevant, but I do quite like her design.

  7. …I completely forgot that Iceheart called back to the lyrics of "Answers". Starting at 8:35. She says "Warrior of Light, redemption is not beyond us", a refutation of the last line of the first verse "How can we carry on if redemption's beyond us". Her next line "We who walked before may lead those who walk after" is in agreement with the lyric "Look to those who walked before to lead those who walk after" at the end of the second verse. Fitting, as Iceheart tells the player not to "squander Mother's gift" and repeats Hydaelyn's first words to us.

  8. Welcome, Playfriends, to your spoiler free lore comment! I'm glad you've enjoyed our opening act, Durmin and the Scions! But we know what you're all here for! Our headliner! Tonight, at the The Akh Afah Amphitheatre, SHIVA!

The first song in the The Akh Afah Amphitheatre is "Footsteps in the Snow", but the banger everyone remembers comes after the Diamond Dust attack at 5:22. This song is "Oblivion", and is great! Originally, not everyone was sold on this rock song as a boss theme, but over the years its become a favorite. Please do be careful if you want to look up videos on Youtube for the full song, as many tend to have visual spoilers for the next expansion. Also, something to remember about music in FFXIV, there are very few localized songs, so there's a good chance that if you're hearing a song with English lyrics, that's the same song Japanese players are hearing, lyrics and all.

So, Shiva is a lady, Iceheart. But also a Primal. And a historical figure. And she knows about Big Crystal Mom! This throws everything we know about Primals into upheaval. The continuing thread of "what is a Primal" gets increasingly tangled!

So, with the Doman's assistance, the Crystal Braves have scored a major victory. The Ivy is uprooted! Roaille has a major chip on her shoulder from her Ishgardian upbringing, but Ilberd shows that outcomes can be different. As the Ala Mhigan states, he'd rather cut off his own arm than betray a friend. Although Ilberd's personal biases do show in his later dialouge. As an Ala Mhigan, Garleans & their spies top his list of enemies.

Moenbryda has discovered a new technique to push back against the Ascians! The possibility of killing an immortal is tempting, but the logistics of the method is lacking. But each step is a step forward.

And now, to the 3 most powerful women in Eorzea. The Sultana's view of helplessness is understandable, she was orphaned at a young age, and the Syndicate views her as a useful puppet. Unlike her peers in this conference, she did not earn respect in another capacity before becoming Head of State. As she notes, abolishing the Syndicate would look like an overreach of the crown. But the other city states do not have a representative body in their government to counter their decrees. As much as Nanamo notes a government must be "of the people", Ul'Dah is the only government that is representative, albeit representative of the rich. But Nanamo's nuclear option of abdication has significant blind spots. While her plan insists there would no longer be monetarists or royalists, gil still buys power on the streets of Ul'Dah…

  9. Raubahn: "You mean Roaille was a double agent?"
Me: "Triple. Working for both you and the Garleans would already make her a double agent."
Ilberd: "Triple. If you consider her services to van Baelsar and the new emperor as separate."
Me: "No, dude, that makes it quadruple. Ugh!"

  10. I didn't notice at the time, but Iceheart and Moen look really similar as far as hair and outfit. Don't know if that was intentional or not, as they don't seem to act as foils in any way other than one is an ally and the other an enemy operating at roughly the same time.

  11. Shiva looks really cool, though that hair is a Choice.

Alphinaud, bby, politics are complicated. Especially international politics. Don't get mad when someone has to move some chess pieces in order to do the right thing. Also, she's right, you're super privileged, and the sooner you understand that, the better you'll be.

  12. I love this LP so much ;w; I've tried playing the game because it's so interesting and the way you present it and your enthusiasm is very persuasive, but alas, social anxiety doesn't want to cooperate. So I'm living the story vicariously through Playframe XD And I must say, I adore that you take the time to talk to NPCs now, it really adds that connection to your companions, just seeing them relax and be silly together. Moenbryda is such a treasure lol. Thanks so much for doing this LP, it helps calm me down in times of change in my life right now. I appreciate you guys channel a lot <3

  13. Aymeric's VA will also be unmistakable to JRPG players as Angelo in Dragon Quest VIII, and whatever the fancy lad was called in Xenoblade Chronicles (I can only imagine that's what IMDb lists him as). Both games having the exact same feel that FFXIV will start to have going forward.

  14. On the whole voice-acting thing. Once I realized (and confirmed by looking it up) that Alphinaud's VA was Sam Riegel, I can't not hear Scanlan Shorthalt doing some sort of bit [like, mocking a rich fop] whenever Alphinaud talks.

  15. I think they call it 2.5 and 2.55 as these final patch stories before the next expansion always come out in two halves. There's a lot more x.55s in the future, although they get better at smoothing over the cracks in the pause later if you come in after they're both out.
