  1. I don't even play final fantasy or know what it is, but whenever a playframe video comes up on final fantasy I click it just to see the adorable wave at the beginning.

  2. Hey Dan, just wanted to give you a really big thanks for making this series. FF14 has never been one I could play, because being the caretaker of a pair of elderly parents, I have never had time for any sort of live gaming where I was unable to pause the game so I could go and help them with something. Your series is giving me the chance to enjoy this story. Thanks a million.

  3. THE TALE OF DURMIN

    Ep 038

The story of Eorzea is a grand and sprawling narrative. One that, unfortunately, belies a simple telling broken up over months of individual sessions – including necessary if tragic breaks. In the interest of helping viewers remember the characters and terminology they have seen before I have taken the liberty of creating a pronoun glossary of sorts of Durmin's adventures.

A few notes before we get started (this text will be the same in every episode, so feel free to skip it in future episodes). First: And most importantly, this glossary is COMPLETELY SPOILER SAFE . I have manually built each entry from the episodes that preceded it; although I have played most of the game, I have taken every effort to just copy information from these videos. Second: This is not a story recap, most of the story will not appear here. This is just a glossary of terms. Finally: This little project turned out to be significantly more exhausting that I anticipated and while I am happy to continue, I will make mistakes. There may be missing information in these records, and I welcome any additions provided they can timestamp the text where the information came from. I also shift in and out of various tones as I get more and less tired, so please forgive these inconsistencies, I plan to slowly unify the tone over time now that 2.0 is complete.

I'll also be including fun facts about the glossary at the end of each expansion.

  5. A cool thing to note about the battle scene involving Thancred and Yugiri: Rogue and Ninja were not added for two more major patches after this. Only later on in the story did the Domans become available to teach people Ninjitsu.

This is the first instance of a neat thing the game does sometimes where they have a cool choreographed, well animated fight with a character using an upcoming job as the introduction to that job in-game. And it is quite the little spectacle to introduce Ninja mechanics and abilities!

You can actually see that Thancred starts the fight with the Gladiator attack pose he was using in 2.0 and, upon picking up another dagger, switches to the Rogue/Ninja attack stance. It's a neat touch and let's you know that, hey, your friends are gonna learn new jobs too, not just you!

  6. I’m only at 3:00 at it just occurred to me how much I love Slafborn
There’s this awesome vibe to him and the town in general of appreciation, for the amazing opportunity that is creating a new community from the ground up.

  7. Interesting note, of things that only made sense at the time:
You see how Yugiri fights like a ninja, and how Thancred goes on to fight like she does? When this quest was released, Rogue and Ninja weren't in the game yet! This was the first time we had seen anyone fight with two weapons, two knives in this case.
In fact, before the release of the Rogue the class that used knives was the Gladiator, and that is mostly how Thancred fights before this. So while the scene of him changing styles may look a little bit out of place regarding the storytelling, at the patch this was introduced this was a big tease of what the new job was going to be.

And the game would proceed to later on do teases about new jobs, some more clear and others less so.

  8. Leviathan Trivia (stolen shamelessly from the wiki): Leviathan was originally meant to appear as a boss in version 1.0, but was cancelled as the fight was scheduled to release in the aftermath of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami and was considered disrespectful to those affected by the event.

  9. Fun fact, up to this point, Thancred has been coded as a gladiator/paladin, using a shortsword as a stand-in for a dagger and no shield because rogue/ninja had not been imemented on 2.0 original launch. In this episode's cutscenes, we see him officially change into a rogue when he draws his second daagger.

  10. A small part of me hopes that the Admiral's VA has a trope of voicing very tall ladies. I've only heard that voice attached to the Admiral and Elewen from Skyrim, one hilariously tall and the other just amusingly tall.

  11. I love that you’ve been playing through FFXIV. It’s a blessing that you have been playing through this game so thoroughly, Dan. I adore every one of your Let’s Plays that I watch; you’re just such a naturally kind and adorable person, as is Carrie. I love you both. Best of luck in safety and in health to you. Thank you for how much you enrich every one of our lives. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.❤️

  12. If you're worried about boats springing a leak, you should know not leaking at all would have been weird. Boats had pumps to deal with a little leaking. Now, a LOT of leaking would still be a problem.

  13. As Durmin prepares to for a whorl of a time, the spoiler free lore comment is here to… talk about semantics. Okay, we'll talk about some other things too, it's a grab bag kinda day.

Let's get down to some linguistics! FFXIV uses the term "tempered" for those who have been enthralled by a primal. But it appears that the use of this term wasn't always intended to be universal. Those enthralled by Leviathan are called the "drowned", which are apt for those who under the control of a sea primal (19:35 is a good example of this). But the first Primal encountered by players is Ifrit, who demonstrates the enthrallment, and Durmin's resistance to this effect. In a kind of anchoring bias, the term for Ifrit's thralls, tempered (after the heat treatment technique, suitable for a fire Primal), has taken hold as the primary term for other Primals. As a result, the game slowly uses "tempering" and "tempered" in relation to all Primals. In universe, the reason for this is due to the high numbers of those tempered by Ifrit, resulting in their sheer numbers displacing the terms used for other Primals.

You might notice Durmin comes by a lot of "bad guards". This is partially due to the fact that Durmin vastly over levels the local enemies. Hostile enemies will normally aggro to players in their cone of detection, but when a character is significantly higher level, enemies will ignore them. This is to eliminate the annoyance of low level enemies swarming high level characters who are passing through older areas.

Next, another piece of trivia about Yugiri! It was foreshadowed in the last episode that Yugiri is very good at hiding, and that's because she's a ninja! in Patch 2.2, Rogue and Ninja hadn't been released, so this is another bit of appetizer for the players. You might notice that Thancred is also sporting a pair of blades now. In ARR, Thancred (and many other NPCs, like Cid) used battle animations of Gladiators, even though he didn't use a shield. Being the Scions' resident sneak, this new fighting style is much more his speed, and meshes well with his backstory of being an urchin in Limsa.

In the melee with the Sahagin, we finally see Admiral Merlwyb Bloefhiswyn in action wither her twin pistols Death Penalty & Annihilator. No, she never seems to need to reload. Merlwyb has a bit of backstory regarding the Sahagin & Leviathan. Or rather, was retconned to have some backstory. In the lead up to Endwalker, the development team released a series of small side stories (they typically do this for each expansion, beware of LOTS of spoilers in these Tales from the ___), one of which focused on Merlwyb's past. Long before she became Admiral, Merlwyb was a member of the League of Lost Bastards, one of the many pirate companies in Limsa. Called to action by the threat of the last time Leviathan endangered Vylbrand, all of the available forces in Limsa moved against it. After a major battle, Merlwyb's father, Bloefhis Bloefhisyn, went missing. Rumors of pirates attacking along side the Sahagin soon began to spread. Merlwyb eventually lead a force to eliminate these pirates, and found them all enthralled by the primal. Worst still, they were lead by her own father. In the end, she dueled her emaciated father, not in a protracted battle, but in the way of the pirates. A dozen paces, turn, and fire. Now, with the Lord of the Whorl returned, The Admiral knows exactly what is at stake for all of Limsa Lominsa.

Next time, we'll be talking about Leviathan. But we won't be talking about lore…

  14. Hurray! FF XIV time!

So I remember Moogle King Mog was supposed to be a Leviathan fight, but they made the switch because of an IRL tsunami befalling Japan.

Is this the postponed Leviathan arc but released at a later time?

  16. Can someone clarify the FF14 free trial for me?
Does it means I get to play up to LV60 + 1st expansion for 30 days for free then pay monthly subscription after that whether I finish the 1st expansion or not?
Or completely free up to the 1st expansion no matter how long it takes for me to finish it?

  17. This bit of the story was added in 2.2, where they also added the Rogue/Ninja class/job. Thancred, who up until now has been a gladiator, has effectively changed classes to Rogue here, much in the way that the player can by changing his equipped weapon. This is not the last time a member of the Scions will change to a different class. They almost always get a fun scene to show off when they do!
