  1. Reminder to my lore nerds, this entire series is designed not to spoil things for people playing through the game. If there’s a fact that we learn later – I will include it when we learn it.

  2. I've been pretty seriously playing 14 for the past 5 years, and had looked into some 1.0 lore so I knew a bit of this. But even so you managed to lay it out so clearly and cleanly that I learned a few new things. Bravo sir! Outstanding!

  3. I always love it when Jesse Lore deep dives or goes into crazy theory crafting. With Dawntrail a day away I can't wait to see how much Jesse gets right. Also no matter how many times I've seen the Answers opening and theme it always hits hard. It really it is one of Uematsu's greatest pieces.

  4. Neat little factoid: if you had a character in 1.0 and ported it over to Realm Reborn, you got a different set of cutscenes designed to reference back to your character being the warrior of light from that time. A new character sees different cutscenes, so the only way to see them is via clips on YouTube.

  5. I'm probably the only person out there that actually wanted a 1.0 Classic. Not so much of an exact classic "Vanilla release", but more of a remake with today's current up to date UI and features. Guess what I really want to re-experience are the old maps with awkwardly positioned over leveled mob placement, 50 cap, old stories and music, and the original leveling system (minus the 1.0 fatigue) of an old style mmo.

  6. Some people may think that showing the entire Battle of Carteneau without commentary is the product of lazy writing or editing.

Those people do not understand the impact of these events.

  7. I've always been meaning to get around to watching a MSQ compilation of a 1.0 play-through (and still do), this is such a nice informative booklet sized summary of 1.0, and in only ~20 minutes.

  8. Nael van Darnus is a woman, btw. At least, the one we know – she's actually Eula Darnus, and she assumed the identity of her brother (the real Nael) after he died, long before the events of Project Meteor.

There was some confusion as the Japanese language version left her gender ambiguous until she revelaed her face after you faught her at the end of 1.0, while the English version went with male pronouns, which sort of made her post-boss reveal confusing. She also never regained her sanity before her death in the English version, while she did in Japanese. The record would eventually be set straight in "Encyclopædia Eorzea: The World of Final Fantasy XIV" which revealed the above information regarding her true identity as Eula.

  9. Jesse, this was amazing. I've been playing 14 for 2.5 years now and the 1.0 stuff has always been somewhat known to me…but never organized so I could actually understand it. You did that. Thank you.

  10. Yes, after going through later expansions, much of how/why this all happened is much clearer. But not to be written here, of course. However, much of this involving Gaius I had not known. Thanks, Jesse.

  11. Maaan this is the summary I had been missing!! I didnt learn any of this context around Dalamud, Cid, and the Empire until I stumbled into the Bozja questline. Then I asked a veteran friend to fill in the blanks… First time I really felt liked I'd missed out in not being around for 1.0!

  12. Excellent video Jesse. It hits all the major plot points of the end of the story. I think if there was perhaps two things I would consider including (which may be an interesting point in a focused video of each of the individual city-states of Eorzea), it would have been the internal politics of Ul'dah, Gridania, and Limsa Lominsa prior to the formation of the grand companies and how the grand companies were founded. There's a lot of interesting character moments in that of the political leaders establishing themselves beyond their country's borders.

The other thing that I would have included would be just how terrifying the descent of Dalamud was, how with each new patch (every couple months or so) the damn thing kept getting bigger… and bigger… while perhaps minor in the grand scheme of themes, it set the tone of anticipation of what was going to happen — ending in what is probably the best send-off to an MMO on the brink of collapse.

Anywho, those are my two cents!

  13. This is such a well made video. I will always appreciate the former history teacher giving lessons about one of my favorite games.

These 1.0 cutscenes were really something else, especially the WoL and the Archon's confrontation with Gaius. Much more fluid than what we currently have right now. Hope we can come back to this style again some day.

18:33 This little tidbit kinda makes me wish that this was mentioned during the Myths of the Realm Alliance Raid – if not by the NPC scholars then by the actual characters and bosses in the raids themselves.

That transition from 1.0 to ARR is definitely a once in a lifetime thing that you had to be there o fully experience what the hell just happened. From the server shutdown to the eventual reveal of 2.0, pulling off that kind of miracle is such a monumental feat. Makes me wanna rewatch the Noclip documentary all over again.

  14. i loved 1.0
sure it played like hot garbage….
but man did it have all the charm in the world already.
and ever since, that charm only grew into something bigger and better.

  15. I never realized that Nael literally does the walk through flames evil psychopath FF thing after going crazy and all before making a meteor fall. VIIth legion indeed… I'd heard they were inspired by Sephiroth, but just assumed it was because of the meteor bit.

  16. Haven't seen any of your videos before, but i have to say. This one was amazing! You earned a sub!
Also, the footage from 1.0 used was just incredible. Kind of made me want to at least try 1.0 😀
