  1. 13:21 So, yes, 7 and 13 specifically are the ONLY exceptions, even Tactics has 14 covers haha. Now, when it comes to representation, 7 CERTAINLY has plenty, from the Meteor imagery, to all the Weapons appearing, to the Advent Children bike with the OG Midgar Escape music and everything… But no remixes of 7 tracks. That being said, 14 does take direct inspiration for some of its tracks from 13, but also no proper 13 tracks. Just stuff close, and similarly MANY references to the point people can just call the entirety of Shadowbringers up to 5.3’s end one big FF13 reference.

  2. Being a classic battle theme, it's only natural there's also a Black Mages version of this track, a bit surprised it wasn't included in this reaction. Great reaction as always!

  3. In the original FF5, this boss has one VERY unique thing going for it: It takes up most of the game screen. No other boss in any other game (that I know of) takes as much. I mean the boss is pretty much TOUCHING the first character. Imagine seeing THAT in 3D… and I don't mean FF14 style. The FF14 version was also a bit unique in the way of how the boss reveals itself. Also, unless you count certain mounts and armor pieces, FF14 has NOT covered FF7, FF10 and FF13 at least. I am unsure of FF2. And yes, every time the screen goes dark in FF14, either the player went over edge and died or it's a party wipe and the fight resets. The party in question probably encountered the boss for the first time and so they didn't have any strategy for it. The thing was that you only fought Neo-ExDeath in savage mode (aka Hard difficulty)

  4. To explain the XIV footage: NeoExDeath is hidden behind the difficulty upgrade “Savage difficulty” so to even see the phase (and hear the song) you need to pick the normal ExDeath fight on savage.

As the name suggests, the difficulty is tough, so you’re watching the players die… a lot lol

  5. FF14 does have some FF7 representation. Emerald/Ruby/Sapphire/Diamond weapons, Knights of The Round, Ultimate Weapon, Final Heaven is the Monk job's limit break, there's a character called Jessie that looks exactly like the one from FF7…

  6. Can't currently afford to patreon request it as I'm between jobs, but still HIGHLY recommend taking a listen to "Matoya's Cave" from FF1, "The Mushroomery" from FF14, and "Matoya's Cave(Black Mages Version)" in that order and all in the same video, it's the same theme but 3 different takes on it; spoiler: they're all great.
If any of you Patreons are thinking of what to request next… maybe give this some consideration?

  7. You are correct, Battle on the Big Bridge is from FFV and is the introduction of Gilgamesh to the series. It's hands down the most underrated FF of the entire franchise simply because most people haven't played it. Both the gameplay (mechanics), story and soundtrack are absolutely stellar. I highly recommend the pixel remaster!
The Black Mages did this one as well on their 3rd album, The Black Mages – Neo Exdeath!
They also did Grand Cross, the Necron theme! And that one is a banger I am sure you will enjoy.

  8. this song actually begins when neo exdeath appears in XIV, the video just has the 2nd phase going through the whole video, because people were well acquainted with the phase 1 song due to the fight having an easier version that simply ends when you beat Exdeath and never gets to the Neo form.

  9. Not a lot of FF7 references explicitly in FF14 to my knowledge, but it is referenced in Limit Breaks with Cloud's Buster Sword and Aerith's staff showing up for DPS and White Mage respectively.

  10. FF7 is really the only game they haven't touched upon aside from one glam item. Yoshi P has said in an interview a long time ago that they are very reluctant to incorporate FF7 into FF14 because of how iconic it is among the fan base and they don't feel they could really do anything that would be satisfactory

  11. It's interesting that the FFXIV video uses the Phase 2 music over the whole fight. I guess it's supposed to be more about showing the song and having related background footage than a literal "Here's what it sounds like in-game". Personally I think hearing the music fade out during the phase transition and then having the new track come in as the boss tears through the rift adds a lot to the presentation, but the track is good either way

  12. Final Fantasy 5 is probably as a whole my favorite of the "oldschool" era of Final Fantasy. Yes, FF4 really kicked off the super focus on the actual plot and having character arcs and stuff like that, and even leaned into the magitech angle first. FF6 had this serious plot that played out like a proper epic that even ends in a multi act opera style composition with the final part being a full-blown rock song. FF5 though…. there's something incredibly charming that I think was only really tapped into by FF9 in the rest of the series. It has such a solid like… a proper adventure vibe to it? Yes, the fate of the world is at stake, but something about it feels more about the adventure than the destination for me? It's hard to put into words.

  13. Theres still a few games they haven't "covered" however Yoshi-P (the director) has said this next Expansion will be heavily based on FFIX whatever that could mean. What i am hoping for is a Soken cover of Crossing Those Hills

  14. SE knows that their music is a huge draw. I think part of the reason that this stays so close to the original composition in ff14 is because this section of the game where you find the fight is supposed to be a tribute, a big nostalgia trip. Instead of bringing in ExDeath and making him part of FF14 and reworking him to be a part of 14, its literally… Exdeath from 5 and I think they try to reflect that. In addition to him you fight Chaos from 1, and Kefka from 6, and even the phantom train from 6 as a sort of boss rush.

  15. Necron's theme from FF9 is called "The Final Battle" or, in the Black Mages version, "Grand Cross", and it's little surprise Neo Exdeath seems connected to it, after all the Necron battle is actually pretty inspired by this predecessor:
    – the boss wants to reduce the existence to nothingness
    – the boss catches you by surprise, unannounced
    – they're both connected to an evil tree entity
    – they share an infamous ability, Grand Cross, which affects the party with every kind of negative status

The main difference between them seems Neo Exdeath wants to erase everything, including themselves, out of anger and desperation, while Necron seems to do what they do because they feel it's the right thing to do, to nullify the pain from every living being, as a selfless desire.

I can't recall there being any references to tactics advance or crystal chronicles in there, but I'm sure there is. Every main numbered game is reflected (heh) in 14 in some way, and often times they will focus on a single game as the main point of attention in parts of the game. For example, the entirety of the post-patches of Endwalker are very FF4 in the best of ways.

  17. Games not really covered in ff14 so far: FF2 isn't really covered too much. FF7 has a lot of small tidbits like Golden Saucer and mob designs. Same with 13. FF 11 will get its shoutout shortly.

  18. Personally, I'm always a little disappointed when you listen to a phase 2 track without listening to Phase 1. They're almost like movements, and they tell a story to listen to them in order. The videos you watched were both phase 2, and even weirder was phase 2 was playing during the first half of the fight for the FFXIV video. I guess they took out the music for phase 1 and used phase 2 music for the whole video.
