The very first Variant Dungeon and Criterion Dungeon were just released in Final Fantasy 14 and the community is quite disappointed at the lackluster rewards. For clearing Another Sil’dih Subterrane (Savage) the players get their choice of… materia as a reward. Yes, materia. In this video Xeno goes over a Reddit thread about the bad rewards in FFXIV patch 6.25 and gives his own opinion about how the rewards should be changed.

The lack of extra gear avenues for players that are unable to do savage raiding (by unable, I mean getting 7 other people on the same page to do it) has been the biggest oversight in the game since…ARR. I can see the argument of "Dont make these dungeons a WoW Clone of Mythic +" where you need to do these dungeons first to do savage raiding. That's where I think the dungeons themselves should serve as the alternative. There's enough assets in game to copypaste new gearsets together… They did experiment with Eureka relic armor, the new dungeons would have been a good place to put Relic Armor into the game.
As the dungeons progress through the rest of the patches, so too do the Relic Armor gains strength. It wont meet the same level as Savage but by the time Savage is done (6.5) it'd be on par with it in terms of power. The limits the game places on upgrades would work as well.
Ever since the current relic weapons were announced to be tied to hildi quests I asked myself why???
Even before 6.25 dropped I thought, criterion dungeons were maybe meant to be used for the relic grind but it didn't work out/they chose not to, at the least minute.
It would certainly explain why criterion is lacking thought on the rewards & why relics feel tacked on to hildi quests….
Of course I could be completely wrong, even though this seems to add up.
That last part stung, cause they'd rather invite Rich and Asmon who don't even play the game (albeit Rich finished 6.0) rather than the sweatiest FFXIV streamer we got.
They need to put something that is worth repeating. After the hype wears off and people will clear the dungeon you will not be able to find people. In about 3-4 weeks it'll be impossible to find people to do it because why would they?
To be perfect it should reward a weekly tome gear upgrade item.
I agree they should have done it the Alliance raid or the Bozja/eureka way of doing the gear so that people are still motivated in doing the 8 man Savage which is still ongoing. But dropping shine, brine or twine would not have hurt which make me deduce that they may have quite severe numbers issue that they just can’t even out right now causing the lacklustre in the loot distribution. And all the problems that we all face become more apparent with more jobs and content throw into the fray.
the worst part is spending 6 hours to prog the first 2 bosses and walk away with nothing at all
Not sure it should give gear tbh. Even upgrades not sure, unless it was at same time as "catch up". But the rewards are bad. That chair is not even good (I just think savage loot is just bad in general)
Idk why I have to use my bis or so savage gear for this (crit alone). I feel I should play warrior, but I have a 635 gunblade… so why use a 615 axe? Why is this not a lower level like unreal/bozja? Then i can use any job.
I think criterion is too hard (punishing) when its only 'extreme'. I dont think the raise restrictions should be the way they are, and you can accidentally raise the same person and you can't cancel it.
Boss 1 and Boss 2 aren't that bad, but I'm annoyed with Boss 3's teleport bs. I didn't like it in E7S but this is worse. Not to mention the camera blinding you bc of the environment? At least deep dungeon you could move them in places that were easier even with anxiety. And you can't even crit solo. Stupid.
Trash before boss 2, if I have to constantly move, make them more mobile. Again, I know SE can bc i usually deep dungeon solo between savage/ultimate progression. I wanted new deep dungeon, not this.
Everyone is complaining about the rewards but aren't giving enough about the content itself.
Knowing how this guy usually acts, gonna guess he thinks the rewards are not good for criterion, or you can't get much. Starting vid now
Bruh no. Legit wanted harder dungeons for the fun of it. For the fuck of it. No rewards expected. That's the idea.
Buhh
I got all 12 routes, got the mount, it only took a day of gaming and I have no reason to ever play them again. xD I looked at the savage rewards and noped away. Hell, the outfit you get in normal is outdone by the free Halloween outfit in my opinion. It's either they make content too hard or too easy, or we get Bozja. Which I kind of liked thinking back on it.
If they allow you to get viable raidgear from ways other than the raids, then that content becomes mandatory for raiders. They clearly don't want that. Hell, I don't want that. I like criterion a lot, but I don't want to be expected to run it weekly in order to be caught up on raid gear.
Maybe have it reward tomes? Then it would be something you could do if you want, but it wouldn't be expected of you, if you'd rather get your tomes some other way.
I honestly don't know what they could do to make the rewards "worth it" though. I would hate being forced to do it weekly for gear. Unless maybe the gear is not on the level of the actual raid gear, but instead 620 like the tomegear? I guess that could work, but at that point, would people say that the gear rewards are worth it? I have doubts. Lol
100% will not do this savage dungeon because the rewards are just not worth my effort of trying to clear it 🤷🏻♂️
Being that this is the debut of an entirely new type of content I'd understand if they just want to test the waters before committing to something like gear rewards. Are they balanced well enough for all jobs to participate equally, do people actually enjoy doing them, how long do they take players to complete and will they get burnt out on them, etc.
As one of the comments said the moment Criterion dungeons drop gear they become "required" to clear every week or whatever to gear as fast as possible which could potentially upset people considering how low of a time investment the game tends to be. Add too many chores and it starts to have the same problem as WoW.
Then if people are gearing faster they may not be playing for as long which could affect sub revenue. (I have no idea what the numbers on this would look like but it could be a concern for Squeenix.) The gearing process takes as long as it does for a reason, I assume, so if Criterion dungeons give gear rewards they may make it take longer to get gear elsewhere or limit the number of tomestone gear upgrades that can be used in a week. Which at the worst could mean more work for the players for the same reward.
Gear in FFXIV is very shallow, there are no cool unique pieces with different effects just slightly different sub stats so any gear rewards added to Criterion dungeons wouldn't be very interesting. Should they simply drop upgrade materials for tomestone gear, an entirely different set with different stats, or should the whole gear system be reworked to allow for more interesting pieces from different sources?
It makes perfect sense that Criterion would provide gear in some way but all those details need to be considered. Imo it would be a shame if they never progressed beyond what they are now but I guess we'll see.
New content already dead on arrival because of poorly thought out effort/reward, good job SE. I swear, it seems FFXIV been hemorrhaging for the past few years, where only content REAL effort being put into is story/MSQ. Gotta say i've been playing less and less, soon it will be time to say good bye.
new gear drops, means new glamours & balancing…, but Yoshi and half his team are tied up in FF16 atm.., soo no can do atm
I think they didn't add anything crazy because they weren't completely sure how many people would bother clearing the content. At the same time, giving basic rewards promote even more not doing it, but if they add something that everybody wants and the content is hard/challenging the forum would be bloated of posts of people ranting that cool rewards are locked behind "unclearable" content. Even if you add upgrades for gear, only raiders would bother doing the content and not most of the casual playerbase, which is probably the 95% or more of people that play this game
Considering how difficult ASS is … yeah … pretty lame
In World of Warcraft saving the entire universe and defeating the mightiest of foes nets you a whopping 32 gold so consider yourselves fucking lucky.
Here's a legitimate question in endgame, in an mmo, what even constitutes as a "meaningful reward"? Because you're not really working towards something when you get the reward so I don't understand the problem?
Mounts and minions are cosmetic and are a reward in themselves, gear thats just another 5 ilevels higher isnt really anything to write home about, materia you can get from literally any content, glamours are only cosmetic too so like, whats the problem? Its how the game has always operated, its how MMOs in general have always operated, theres no reason to do something unless theres a reward for it, but the reward is very rarely ever truely "meaningful" just play the game to have fun.
cant even enter this scnd thing because im gearing 2 different chars at once and there both only 606 or somehting, i dont understand that in a game that makes it so easy/enjoable to have more jobs, why is it so hard to gear more than one at the same time (yeah there is crafted gear) but im talking about normal gearing.
there is NO DOWNSIDE i can think of if it was easyer to get like the 620 gear for more jobs at once.
like i understand that u dont wanna make that 630 so easy to get but who fucking cares about 620 ?
lemme farm that 620 on my 5 toons, like why the fuck not ?
just farming gil and than buying craftgear for my 5 toons sounds fucking boring to me.
Bozja had several different levels of "catch-up gear" that was great for us casual players for gearing up alternate jobs. Would love to see something similar in EW.
