FFXIV's new Variant Dungeon is Great! (Patch 6.25)

Seriously I think I ran this dungeons like 6 different times with one of my friends before even thinking about committing my thoughts to a video. So here it is! I think this new Variant Dungeon system is an amazing addition and I hope to see more like it in the future!

  1. I remember geeking out to my mate when they announced this because I'd seen your video on Ul'dah and was instantly sold on more lore. If they make another one on Gelmorra I will lose it.

  2. Hey, Scribe.

I've been doing the Variant dungeon since it came out, and you hit the nail on the head about the fun of being able to do it solo—as that's how I've been doing it the whole time. Exploring, taking my time, absorbing everything I can and learning as I go.

It might be considered a spoiler, but I think it's important to also point out that the music used in both the Variant and Criterion sections are remixes of the Thanalan themes.

While it may not say much aside from reusing assets to make something new, I think that may also be a very small clue that it's possible to get Variant dungeons for the Shroud (a recently unearthed part of Gelmorra) and La Noscea (possibly a pirate's hoard related to Admiral Merlwyb and the Bastards).

In the same vein, there might even be some for Ishgard, Ala Mhigo, Othard, and others if the content becomes quite popular for a good number of players.

    Ah, one can certainly hope

  3. I want blue mage spellbook style descriptions for every job action,
    I want an in-game bestiary,
But most of all I want them to give players the in-game character and organization glossary that is unlocked at the end of EW much much earlier.
Like beginning of A realm reborn earlier.

  4. I kinda love your point about worldbuilding cause you're absolutely right, ffxiv story is a character driven ensemble cast and they have always been the focus. Variant Dungeons give the enviroment a voice, and a narrator to go along with it, and its amazing – just a few little nudges can make reading and thinking about why and where a whole lot more. Also holy heck Criterion is good as a bridge between extreme and savage 8 person raids! Win win!

  5. I hope we get another variant dungeon but for gelmora/twelveswood and Kan-E-Senna will be the companion for that. This could cover quite a few bases, for example more lore about gelmora, the duskwights, the elementals, the padjal and seedseers and a few character moments with Kan-E-Senna. And to get a bit in conspiracy theories here: In the last alliance raid we fought NaldThal the patron of Ul'dah and a patch later we got the underground of Ul'dah as the variant dungeon. And next patch we very likely fight Nophica in the alliance raid so I will prophesize that we will get "the twelvewoodian subtereane" in the patch after that 😉

  6. We need a Variant Dungeon exploring the Mun Toy Cellars and/or the Gelmorran Ruins in the Shroud, maybe one in La Noscea too; maybe the old 1.0 dungeon that was never released. They have a lot of potential weaving in old 1.0 stories that were cut or changed or were rumoured to come. Obviouly they can do it with newer areas too… but having a reason to look back on these 2.0 places helps re-explain the fundamentals people may have forgotten over the years, give more new information as well as give veterans a blast in the past and something everyone can do.

  7. I…*really* need to get in on this!

On an unrelated lore question, is it possible for someone to posess the Echo and not know it? I'm working on the lore for an rp character and I wanna fact check before I have her think that she just has a knack with understanding what people are trying to say and with making herself understood

  8. I took my time, tried every combination, poked at every option, and found where all the clues that become solutions are. Admitedly I looked up what the note means, and that it was a solution… because even with the 2 clues I couldn't put it together myself. The rest I worked out, while doing the runs solo, over the course of two days.

The note says "SE" so that one was clear, but I ask you, how did YOU figure out what the second sack was?

  9. I've run it three times so far – with friends which was fun 🙂 I want to see every path, even if I already have the emote from it… there is a particular mount with my name on it.

  10. I am right there with you, I am playing through it multiple times both in parties and alone just enjoying the story of the past and am overjoyed to be learning more, both about a dear friends history and the worlds.

  11. I'm going through the paths for myself and am not checking out any guides until/if I hit a complete dead end and can't figure out what I'm missing (7/12 so far) and it's been really cool. Very good addition, please do keep at it SE!

  12. Yes, HECK YES! I loved the New Variant Dungeon! I finally got the 12 pages of the normal version & now have the awesome mount too! I am going to replay them just like you! Then after a while I will try the Savage versions! I knew some lore for this place from your vids but I love the story added to this variant dungeon! I hope more of these come in the future! I hope you do Hildy & the new Tribal questlines; those are both rich in lore!

  13. I had a feeling you would enjoy these dungeons. ^_^
My friends and I had so much fun figuring out every path. And it was fun to put my Lore knowledge to the test. Thanks in large part to your video's and encyclopedia. ❤️
The history of Ul'dah is a subject close to my heart. So much so that the hole time we were running them
I was wearing my traditional Ul'dah clothing. 😊

  14. Me and three members of my FC have been having a blast with this. We've even gone as far as to act as a D&D party and dress the part. We're ignoring the online guides cause it's a lot more fun to figure it out and throw wild ideas at it. I can't wait for more of these in the future cause this is a great piece if content aside from throwing my face at EX trials, dailies, and raids everyday

  15. I recently watched your Amalj'aa & ifrit video and when I went into the dungeon and saw a quiz to which the answer I learned from you, I got really gigitty! I am not usually very deep into lore, and I am bad at retaining information. So thank you for your wonderful videos <3

  16. I really enjoyed the Variant Dungeon and the book entries that you unlocked with them. I finished it all in a matter of 2 days. (Yes, shame on me, i used a guide, but I just don't like doing the fights even more, that's just not for me. and don't get me started on boss in note 12. I NEVER want to see that one again. holy jebus xD)

The lore you get was fantastic and I loved hearing the endearing and tragic past of Nanamo's parents, as well as each route being completely different in look and atmosphere. I can't wait for more Variant Dungeons in the future. Now, pray excuse me while I go on a cleaning spree with my giant sponge mouse.

The possibilities for lore of this new variant dungeon mode. This is just incredible content!

I've listed as many as I could think on top of my head of old civilizations. Am I forgetting something else?
