  1. Reason why Tactics may sound like 12 to you is because of 2 reasons. 1, same composer, 2, both take place in Ivalice, though 12 is a prequel taking place around 1300ish years before Tactics

  3. If I were to give any recommendations for Final Fantasy Tactics, "Precipitous Combat", "Apoplexy", "Ultima's Transformation", "Ultima's Perfection", "A Chapel", and if you enjoy those, I'd check out the music of Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together as well.

  4. Hitoshi Sakimoto also composed 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim which everyone should play.

Antipyretic is a song that plays during battles that can be very long. It was designed to either grow on you or have staying power so you wouldn't just outright reject it after the 5th or so loop.

  5. Hah, it's a bit funny because the reason it sounds "modern" in XIV is that it's a better rip, so it's clearer to hear. It's the same exact song reused, which sometimes XIV does, where they just rip the old soundtracks and play them as is.

  6. I think FFT songs definitely tend to "grow on you" as you noticed, the melodies slowly start to stick out more, and eventually the sweeping orchestral chaos starts to turn into nonstop earworms. Which is good because these battles are long and you listen to these tracks on repeat for an hour sometimes.

  7. Musically, I think FF10 and 13 might be the only games to not have any musical presence in 14 whatsoever, but there's other titles that also only have one or two tracks or even just musical motifs from the other games. Outside of music though there are SO many allusions to each game as far as story beats, characters, locations, monsters, item names, and more. 14 is basically a giant love letter to Final Fantasy as a whole and is very good at reinterpreting the other games references and making them fit within Eorzea while not alienating those who know the source material.

  8. The ost is by far my favorite in the franchise. The seriousness of this game is also why it’s my favorite story, even tho ff4 is my favorite ff game. You should listen to the whole ost. If not then some tracks u can check out:

    Pressure (Tension) No.1
    Run Past Through The Plain
    Trisection
    Desert Land
    Under The Stars
    Decisive Battle
    Apoplexy
    Antipyretic

Just to name a few. Whole album tho is a banger. Also the ff14 development team Creative Business Unit 3, along with Yoshi P and Soken are huge fans of Matsuno and fftactics in general. With Yoshi P saying in interviews that after he played ff tactics he wanted to work at Square in order to be able to make games with his idol Matsuno.

  9. FFT is Tense. most FFs are mostly whimsical with seriousness when necessary. Tactics is mostly intense very little silliness, and most are in like sidequests.
i like how 14 is just a perfect recreation of FFTs music. as it shouldn't be changed that much

  10. Sneakily posting FFT and Legend of Mana when I'm not paying attention. Hahahaha. It's two of my favorite games of all time.

Final Fantasy Tactics was released in 97, War of the Lions was a remaster for the PSP. The original had some in-game cutscenes but the remake made these drawing-like 3D renders that are very painterly for the cutscenes, otherwise the soundscape was very much preserved.

I'll mention that the songs in FFT, since the gameplay is more tactical, is very made to give you the vibe of being in an open field in a tactical battle. Sometimes it feels more grandiose, sometimes it feels more like a skirmish (and far more anxiety filled.) I'll also mention, FFTA and A2 (stands for advance and advance 2) songs are more cheerful and playful, and generally have more energy.

There was a couple of sequels made, FFT Advance and FFT Advance 2. FFT, its sequels and FF12 are actually in the same world, called Ivalice. But FFTA and A2 were more in proximity to FF12 timeline-wise and in style, to put it simply. They all have a similar soundscape. Yoshi-P, the director for FF14 and 16 said that he drew some inspiration from FFT for FF16.

I'll also add, I hold Final Fantasy Tactics with the same regard I do FF9, both of them are a couple of my favorite Final Fantasy games, I feel.

  11. FF Tactics is a truly amazing game. It is a game that takes a LOT of time though. Unless you're super familiar with everything, most fights will take an hour to do. The story is incredible though. No joke, it shaped my views on religion for life.

The FF14 version is a straight lift. It's not an arrangement. It is in fact the original. This was almost like a Sommelier telling you the differences between 2 wines when both samples were poured from the same bottle XD I think more than anything this track demonstrates what the FFT OST is supposed to do. The fights are so long and you hear some of the tracks so many times, it HAS to grown on you the more and more you hear it. You will hear Antipyretic at least 15 times (so like 15 hours) over the course of the game. Every track on the OST is like this. It constantly grows on you.

If hour long battles sound scary… it's not. It's just that the game plays like a battle in Dungeons and Dragons. You have a board with a grid, you have a movement and an action, sometimes a reaction (no Bonus Actions though). But you have to plan things out. And it moves 1 character at a time based on the initiative, just like DND, though not 100% exactly like that. That's just the simplified version.

Notes: War of the Lions is a remaster of the original with additional content. It is a reference to the English War of the Roses. That's as much as I will give you without touching on spoilers.

There are 2 other Tactics games with Tactics Advance originally for GBA, and Tactics A2 for DS. All Tactics Games are part of the Ivalice Alliance series, which Ivalice is the world 12 takes place in. Tactics does not take place at the same time period in the world though.

There have been FF15 and 16 Collab events. They were limited events but they do occasionally rerun them. But they will probably include more references to them in the future. The 16 cross over featured a fight with 16's Ifrit alongside Clive. They also give you actions to replicate the gameplay of the other games in these events. Both events give you music from the respective games, an outfit/hairstyle matching the main character of the games, and most importantly a mount. FF15 gives you a 4-seater mount in the form of the FF15 car The Regalia, and FF16 gives you a mount of Clive's faithful Wolf companion Torgul.

  12. Tactics was probably my favorite game growing up, it was really the first game that made me realize how special a video game story can be, the impact I felt because of my connection to the character was my childhood realization of my love of rpgs and roleplaying and immersing myself into fictional worlds. Tangent aside, it really feels nostalgic whenever I hear the music, like the beginning of a fantastic tale only heard of from legends passed down, which is very fitting thematically. Easily one of my favorite story's even to this day.

  13. Tactics is a phenomenal non-numbered FF game and honestly succeeds in story, music and gameplay. FF XII and Tactics both take place in Ivalice, so honestly, well done making the connection through the music.

If I’m not mistaken, Tactics was potentially inspired by the book, English Wars of the Roses, just as Game of Thrones is believed to be. So yes you are right, the tone of this game is far more mature in many regards.

  14. Regarding your question if FFXIV includes all other FF titles, the answer is main titles and tactics. The world of FFXIV is constructed in such away that it assumes all FinalFantasy universes up to 13 exist there to an extent, which has a very interesting lore reason, while 15 and 16 have been connected through events in a different way. Even the Nier universe got briefly connected through a raid series.
Some titles already had big appearances, the latest being FF9's heavy connection to Dawntrail and the current FFXI alliance raid, others have only been hinted at or inserted as fanservice through smaller references.
In general, FFXIV is a loveletter to the series that even has been acknowledged (and thoroughly enjoyed) by the original creator Hironobu Sakaguchi

  16. Tactics is the only golden era (ps1) Final Fantasy you haven't played 👀 it is a convoluted, dark and deep story about political and religious war with some great plotwists. The gameplay is not for everyone, but is almost the gold standart for tactical rpg.
And the music is just as grandious as the overdramatic game, it is fantastic as a whole.
