Great, SE is gonna be doing something about this, and it will affect other people’s fun.
Another elephant in the room is that Windows simply allows user mode programs to do such operations without protecting against it.
clearly not understanding github .. yes it has TOS but anyone downloading from there should assess whether they trust the individual repo they're downloading from or not, its just storage for developers with useful features for sharing work
Wow No matter what they do going foreward they pretty much fucked themselves, no rebranding or goodwill will ever fix this and I'm kind of confused that they didn't see this would be the outcome? A prime example of someone being brilliant and booksmart but stupid in basic social skills and societal norms.
I hope they didn't develop this under their real names otherwise there future as devs is toast, this is the nuclear option. Its like priority #1 on the list of what not to do as a developer, the user puts immense trust in you to deliver the mod/software as Intended without any malicious code, you start adding in things behind the curtain that fuck with a person's computer whether harmful or harmless and you've immediately lost that person's trust because how can they know you won't do it again? better yet will they even realize it if you did? Most normal people won't be able to sift through code to find out, to them it's all gibberish so they would be safer just blacklisting you and not using any of your software going forward.
6:50 hogwarts legacy
This dude being reacted to is so dumb. Of course applications you choose to run on your computer can fuck up your computer, anyone with even a laymans understanding of computers knows that. The SURPRISING part is a developer saying such stupid things like "We could be doing worse" and using underhanded tactics in the first place. Someone saying that shouldn't be trusted EVER with your computer. It doesn't matter if they take accountability, they should have just lost your trust FOREVER.
I uninstalled GShade and will never be installing it again. Who's to say this guy doesn't decide to just brick people's PC's in the future for no reason?
It's too bad, it was a great shader for alot of games.
Asmon's view point on github is a bit skewed. It's a free for all yes, but the nice thing about the repos is the whole code is right there. So anything malicious could easily be found out. Difference between something like a mediafire/megaupload from github is that everything is in plain view. People won't stop using Github just because they host some malicious projects, which they probably do. Github isn't a place that you just download software from, it's a tool for developers for version control and development tracking. (This only pertains to public repositories, you shouldn't be downloading random software from private unless you understand the risks)
Do people really not understand that anything you download that's not official, especially these mods and addons, can potentially have these things in them? This is no different than the triggernometry addon drama years back (basically, if you were in a party with anyone on the modder's blacklist, you got added to the blacklist and were unable to use the tool suddenly). Then I hear things like the fan launcher and think, "man, how easy it would be to secretly track everyone's logins."
Really? I thought it was fake news.
Funniest part is that Reshade IS the original program
Github is just a repository for code and software.
They don't take responsability for what is uploaded or what you install on your machine
Something he forgot to mention is that if you uninstall GShade, it creates a Backup of GShade in your Users/Public folder, even if you tell it NOT to.
Now imagine Miscrosoft doing the exact same thing since Windows 8. Forced restarts, forced updates, slowed system, removed settings, ignored user settings.
I'm a huge tech nerd and might explore programming/modding eventually. I really like your point about how a lot of communities have a lot of very nice modders because when you get pricks like these, the damage they could do is massive. As someone who comes from the Linux community, seeing people have a hissy fit over what should essentially just be open source and collaborative efforts is just absolutely sad.
This is exactly why SE does not allow any mods or addons, If a dev decides to do something malicious like this, eventually people will start blaming SE by complaining why they allowed this mod/addon in the first place
Well, I switched to ReShade after this. GShade had too many odd things in their DLL to begin with. What's a call to DuckDuckGO doing in there, for example. This was removed in the 4.X release.
as someone that doesnt play ff this seems incredibly stupid
"This was meant to be a lesson to you specifically"
He said as he shot himself in the foot
i heard its spyware made by the CCP, like TickTok
Seems like a big misunderstanding.
The payload was triggered because the program was incorrectly launched. If you cheat in a game, it would also do this (trigger a payload via incorrect launch). It kicks you out of the game, and exits the program, a pop up box with code calling you out. That's what it's set to do there. And you praise it for that.
It has the potential to restart you PC as well (depending on the game). But it doesn't either. Guy just said a little too much, and now people think he can launch nukes.
The guy who made GShade, is smart. I'd use his programs from what I learned today lol
The Reshade guy, is an asshole who's going to look good from this because most people aren't going to look deeper.
I don't play FF anywho, but more things that make the devs sneer at addons more. GG to all involved.
The reason why its so rare that this kind of thing happens it because you dealing with tech savy and passion community. You know what happen when things escalate between passionate being.
These are the real example.
don't use an unauthorised 3rd party program. /thread
Similar story to a wow add-on that the creator tried to put behind a paywall. He was killed for it and ended up reverting back after backlash
