  1. The XIV coin thing is so strange – I wonder why thats a thing? I already own the game on PS5 and PC so it won't actually effect me at all as it says existing players will still have the option to use alternative means (which I will continue to do)

The wording suggests that perhaps the mogstation is built into the XBOX launcher? So you won't actually have to use a different system and a web browser to browse mogstation and buy stuff? MAYBE thats why they're doing it this way? and MAYBE it's something that will come to PS5 eventually but it is very strange.

Requiring Gamepass is a strange situation though as I had thought that was one of Yoshi-Ps red lines and why it hadn't been done sooner cause he didn't want people being forced to pay more then one sub? Either way I have gamepass anyway so it doesn't affect me but it seems like a collection of strange decisions to me?

  2. I think the coins are there because usually Microsoft takes a cut from purchases on that plattforms and the coins are a way to distinguish purchases with from the xbox from other plattforms

  3. The entire coin system is just as a way for Squarenix and Microsoft to get around from needing to get XBox to have to approve the literal entire mogstation

I have seen this many times in the past, its nothing new in gaming. Just a way to skirt around in-game shop agreement issues. (Sides Microsoft can get its cut of the sale from purchase of the coins and not need SE to share its shop data)

  4. For sure Micosoft required the use of the FFXIV coins as a 'transaction fee' since MS gets a 30% commission for every transaction. So if 100 coins cost $100 USD, 30% of that goes straight to MS. Square obviously has no control over this. Take it or leave it; Square had to comply or simply not provide add-on content at all.
Granted, the online store is really just for some mounts, minions, taunts/emotes and some cosmetic (glamour) gear, but having a 30% mark-up just for playing on XB is definitely a deterrent for some.

  5. Just like requiring Game Pass Core, this new currency is another money grab from Microsoft. I'm starting to understand why FFXIV avoided launching on the Xbox for so long.
That said, I am happy they are offering the pre-order bonus rewards. When I started this game back in 2021, those earrings were really helpful in leveling my character. Since I already have Game Pass, I am probably going to get the game anyway because I would like to have a backup option in case I can't play on my PC.

  6. "FFXIV Coins"? That's interesting. To me, it sounds like Xbox (which needs XIV more than XIV needs Xbox) is still making some really silly demands, while essentially getting the least accessible port of the game by making it their own subscription a requirement, on top of thr existing XIV subscription.

And buying a "Coin" to sub isnt a problem either and i dont see how it could be .

  8. They already have a micro currency it's called crysta.crystal. and you will see them already on the mogstation. I'm going to assume what happened is SE said we ain't paying the 30% or what ever theirs tore fee is and Microsoft was like then we need a way to differentiate your ffxiv transaction from all the other SE transactions so the ffxiv coin was developed.

  9. I'm assuming the coin system is because of various factors, such as international transaction fees between MS and SE, % of cut MS wants to take of all in game sales, taxes, all sorts of things like that. Coins can help abstract it and make things simpler and less expensive. For example, let's say there's a $1 FLAT fee for every transaction, that means if someone were to buy a $1 emote, SE didn't make money or if there was such a thing as a $0.50 item, SE would lose money. So using coins that are set to let's say $5 minimum means that even if SE loses due to the transaction, it's not a negative loss. Those are the sorta things that I imagine as the reasons.

  10. Honestly whole FFXIV Coins system is confusing as heck. Does that mean that if I link my current Square-Enix/FFXIV account that I've been using to Xbox one, I have to buy the base game for that platform, the patches and subscription again?

  11. SqEx wants its NFTs.. why not specialized currency for micro-transactions! In all seriousness, it's probably because Microsoft takes a share of the sales and this is how they determine what sales are attributable to Microsoft.

  12. Great video! It's funny how just getting and playing FFXIV is like fighting the first boss! As for the FFXIV Coin, this sounds just like AC in Phantasy Star Online 2: NGS. In that game, you cannot purchase most things directly from the store, instead you purchase AC first. And for PSO2, this same system exists across all platforms of the game, PC (Windows, Steam, EGS), Xbox, and Playstation. So the FFXIV Coin is not really a Microsoft thing. They're just doing following the PSO2 model. Not that I personally like it, but I thought it might be useful to note this.

  13. As many others have said, the coins are likely because of Microsoft

The reason MICROSOFT wants them is definitely because then they can essentially control the cost of optional items by controlling the cost of coins

  14. here's what purchases on the website experience is like. You have to find the right website because for some reason ff14 has more than 3 different bloody websites. You log in on the right website, you click something you wanna buy and then your asked to log in a 2nd time. and just when you click to purchase you are asked a 3rd time to log in. It probably wouldn't be so bad if didn't need to use my app authenticator every single time too!

trust me the coins will save you from the headache of dealing with ff14 backwards website(s)
