  1. As a long time Xbox player I personally don’t see any issue with this I understand that a lot of people could but to me I’m going to be paying for ultimate anyways so it being a requirement doesn’t affect me in the slightest is it a little scummy yeah but if people really just want to play final fantasy not any other game in my opinion it would be better to just get a pc I play Xbox because I understand and like the way it’s treated me for 15 years I can’t just change my view of things

  2. This kinda sucks I would love to try out the beta since I had a free trail account thought I wouldn't have much trouble but it's heartbreaking to wait even longer just to be safe with my account to play crossed platform

  3. Modern Sony is very much like the Xbox of old. They've adopted console exclusivity as their primary selling point. But why roll that back? Sony, Microsoft, and Square Enix have all seen some pretty big losses in 2023. One of the things that the court case between Microsoft and Sony did not reveal was how much that exclusivity costs Sony on a regular basis. Games like God of War and Horizon Zero Dawn and even the recent Palworld showed the potential of an untapped market. But if you wait too long with a game like Ratchet and Clank or Final Fantasy 7 Remake, that market is permanently lost. DRM like Denuvo is also eating into their profits and their PC launch sales.

If I had to guess, Square Enix wants a certain cut from each each account that downloads FF14, hence why it will be blocked off to a higher tier. They likely came to a revenue splitting compromise with Microsoft.

So why do I think they've not had a good year?

Sony had a pretty big drop in profits for the latter half of 2023. For Sony and Insomniac, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 only sold 6.1 million copies as of December 2023. This is bad because the leak revealed how much of a cut Disney/Marvel takes from their sales. If the same numbers from the leak apply, they needed to sell 7+ million at full price to break even. This means that right now, they are still 1 million short and sales have slowed down immensely. That's only on the royalty side too. God of War: Ragnarok does make up that difference, but if the Insomniac leak is to be believed, there are going to be very troubling times for Insomniac (and thus Sony) going forward if it can't hit the 7 million launch figure for each of its subsequent Marvel games.

Square Enix's console game development is bad. It has been pretty much funded by their mobile games. Even the cash cow that is FF14 relied on Luminous for its game engine development to cut the actual costs associated with the game. Meanwhile, games like FF7R and KH3 are developed largely with partnership level support from different companies. They've reached a point where they're actually struggling and people seem to forget that this is why their stock tanked after the release of FF16. That partnership level support just isn't enough anymore and it isn't worth justifying such a large payment. I wouldn't be surprised if Crystal Dynamics had a similar agreement that Insomniac did and that was why Square Enix had to shed the studio or else they would be in an even worse situation. FF14 needs additional support going forward.

  4. It is possible that the XIV sub could be rolled into the cost of Gamepass. I wouldn't hold my breath on it, but I'm not going to get riled up either way until more information is released. But it is good to see that exclusivity is becoming less of a thing.

  5. I play on steam but was excited to play on xbox. As much as i love xbox they make weird decisions that seem to confuse their playerbase. Unless the sub price is rolled into gp not sure i will play on xbox. Is it square or xbox making this choice.

  6. It's not a big suprise to me, it nearly always been the case with xbox to require some kinda of payed service for multiplay. Just because there deal with sony made it so that you didnt need ps+ to play (plus more ps players have + due to needing it to play online now), never once has it made me believe if it ever came to xbox it would be the same. Most if not all xbox players have game pass so the requierment wont even matter. I dont even play on xbox and i still have game pass for PC (i and my partner do have an xbox though).
I also think they dont want current 14 players to link exsisting accounts, because there may be something in the works for at the very least square enix copys of 14 to link and be played cross platform, steam versions less likely, but they are both now labeled as "windows/microsoft" versions of the game. but thats tjust a throey on my part.
Deals have been made and its finally coming to xbox and thats what we should be thankful for and thinking the most about, honestly though in my opinion though, I dont really know how much of an impact its going to have, im happy for it but it also feels a little to late.

  7. This might come across wrong but this is hilarious! Way to shoot yourself in the foot before launching 😂. So Xbox people essentially pay two subs to play this? I wonder if they will reduce or include the 14 sun in the Xbox sun and that’s why it’s being done. Give everyone who pays for gamepass a free 14 sub?

  8. So you assume Square is gonna go bankrupt and close down because 1 platform if it uses Gamepass to access FF14 is gonna drain them of all there money? Then where the seven hells are the other money going for the other platforms? Its not like its being tossed into the Aether and it being lost. The Hell man. The cash I spent on FF14 (PC)'s shop on the website BETTER be going towards FF14 and its servers not into the void.

  9. Didn't they said last time that it was "Technically impossible to make the game free on xbox live" I assume since its a game you need to pay for… and I remember some indie games on 360 bypassed the need for xbox live to play… so they probably slapped a fix that seemed good enough but… haven't thought of games like FFXIV that did not exist at the time (Buy + pay a subscribtion) HENCE why Spencer wanted hiFFXIV on Gamepass ! Makes a lot of sense to me !!

Seeing the reaction of Square enix boss on stage with spencer at the reveal… Either they had an Amazing agreement to make a deal on Gamepass… either Square enix is hella pissed at Sony… which seems to be more likely lol !

  10. Starfieild on ps5 isxa rumour, stop spreading gossip. If this is a full version to gamepass, dont require purchase, perks incoming. Best option for se, in gamepass. How so, it goes on pc and cloud and tvs. I already am getting my character on PlayStation caught up ready to switch acct to xbox,,so i can wait till after free trial. Se is bleeding cash thanks to sony exclusivity deals. They need lots of exposure on many platforms for new customers. Xbox is not in trouble sony is, microsoft is a 3 trillion dollar company.
