  1. People prefer the DPS side of things to be the main factor, but they have roles for a reason. WAR has the best Defense and Sustain, for themselves and for the party. Hand down…

  2. Something people gloss over from PLD is they can block on their own outside of Holy Shelltron and Passage of Arms as well as parry, while the other tanks can only parry. The biggest difference is can block works for both magic and physical attacks for something 25% midagation (at appropriate ilevel) while parry only works on physical damage is a flat 20%.

Also shout out to the devs for finally fixing Living Dead on DRK, in uncoordinated groups / inexperienced healers is was down right infuriating

  3. If Criterion Dungeon Savage ends up being challenging and fun, Warrior’s pros could shine a ton. As for the tanks themselves, Dark Knight used to be my favorite with its Heavensward design, but I’m not a fan of the modern design. The super busy burst phase into the most boring non-healer downtime for 2/3rds of most fights is just unpleasant for me, made worse by button bloat and the job’s lack of sustain feeling bad while playing solo. Probably going to switch to Gunbreaker, which is a shame because I still love Dark Knights thematic and story.

  4. Warrior: play this class if you don´t wanna have fun and just get the job done in the least amount of button presses
Dark knight: fun during burst, outside of burst it´s warrior level boring
Gunbreaker: the most fun tank on average
Paladin: rotation is quite enjoyable and is really fun with bad parties where you are main tank and main healer

  5. As a Dark Knight main, I can definitely say that DRK is a glass cannon which can be fun but clashes with its role as a tank. I’ve said this to friends but DRK has shadowbringers level mitigation in Endwalker content. Without major changes, I’d add self heal to C&S and have 23 and maybe even the 1 in the 123 combo get mana and self heals, rather than delaying both vital resources. Also blood weapon needs to gain a heal on hit. Lots of DRKs damage and resource management tools can easily be turned into mitigation tools without drastically changing DRKs gameplay (and even than DRK needs to do something that makes it less of an edgy WAR)

  6. Warrior can use Infuriate under IR now, they updated IR to only be consumed by Fell Cleave and Decimate.

Also I think that TBN should be listed as a pro and a con. The con is that it's not nearly as good as what the other tanks have for dealing with smaller hits like autos, it's a very all or nothing skill. This is different than "lack of sustain" because it is also a lack of sustain on the other tank if you're the off tank at that time.

  7. My list:
    1. GNB. It's literally a dps wearing a tank disguise.
    2. PLD. Big swords go swoosh.
    3. WAR. Literally the embodiment of "local man too angry to die".
    4. DRK. Really cool, and has the best job quest story, but it's way too squishy for a tank.

  8. I personally have gnb as my main tank just because it doesnt feel as boring as the other tanks to me i havent leveled war yet but i am because they look fun i used to main drk but they dont feel right to me even though they are like gnb and pally might feel good but its such a slog fest leveling wise but beyond that i love gnb i personally though dont understand the whole weaving in mits and moving troubles might be because i dont do ultimates yet and i have only just started progging p4s but if anything i do see the want for no mercy to have its duration increased

  9. I’m still in the camp that WAR is overturned, it’s mitigation, specifically self healing is way too high (easily doubling other tanks self healing and matching healers healing output). Sure we can buff the other tanks to be at warrior self sustain but at what point does it turn the tank role into the “solo majority of content” role

  10. Another big issue with gunbreaker is recovery after death. Its burst is entirely resource dependent, and getting its full burst requires 3 cartridges. With bloodfest being a 90 second cooldown, it can't be relied on as a recovery tool. If you can't build up enough resources in time, then you're likely pushing Double Down, 1200 potency, outside of your own buff and raid buffs permanently.

This is pretty unfortunate, cuz back in ShB, you could pop no mercy whenever it came off of cooldown even with no cartridges, and you'd have enough time to hit your 123 combo, gnashing fang, sonic break, and all its ogcds that you want. Also for boss movement, you could use burst strikes if you had extra cartridges to move them, or needed to create space for weaving mitigation. And doing this wouldn't be a damage loss since you want to use them in no mercy anyways. Now that it has a continuation on it, you have very few options. Sonic Break is basically the only thing. You can technically use lightning shot also, though that is a damage loss.

Gunbreaker just feels a lot more punishing and restrictive to play in EW, which is a real shame since part of why I loved it in ShB was its fun rotation while still feeling flexible. It still has a fun rotation, but I hope eventually it gets something to make it more comfortable to play like all the other tanks have gotten so far. I don't mind some tanks being harder to play than others, but these aspects of gunbreaker feel more like design oversights than an intentionally designed difficulty it has to deal with.

  11. i went back and forth for my favorite tank now that they're all to 90, but I have to settle for DRK. It's just more fun to play for me and now that the invuln is basically fixed I have no complaints besides "I need to pay more attention during big dungeon pulls" lol I do believe criterion dungeons will likely favor the other tanks more, but I'm still gonna try DRK in there too!

  12. I love DRK, mage tank is the coolest thing for me, I’ll trade self sustain for the job fantasy any day, I’m with a healer most of the time anyway.

Though shout out to GNB and it letting me take down Hermes when the rest of the party died at 85%

  13. PLD also can block or parry too, be it randomly throughout a fight or via there block rate boosters (Holy Sheltron, PoA) it is a nice ~20% dmg reduction when it pops. I find it satisfying when you just randomly block a big hit if you somehow forget to pop sheltron or have no gauge for it. Minor correction for Blade of Faith combo, Confiteor doesn't proc it, it specifically says it pops when requiescat expires (which confiteor does, but say you have badly timed your requiscat during a long down phase and it expires naturally, or you mess up and do 5 holy circles/spirits, it gives you blade of faith ready regardless.

  14. Playing WAR since 2.0. Before Nascent Flash is was really the unga bunga big dick fell cleaves that hooked me. But since then its simply the insane amount of healing/self sustain you have which I just love

  15. personal opinons on each tank :

paladin: honestly feels terrible for me. the ranged part of the rotation is neat but your dps suffers incredibly if you dont crit confiteor and also its a super restrictive rotation that you need a literal spreadsheet to change if you want to optimize per fight. if you are top 100 at the job you are incredibly valuable to any party that you are in. if you are average you are usually better served by other tanks. personally i dislike it but it has its crowd. however the restrictive nature of the job is hurting it from being alot better and or more flexible

warrior: currently the most durable of the tanks mitigation wise, i only wish shake it off went out faster since if you use it in a tight window it might miss the shield on some players but so far the only thing holding it back is the crit buffs not affecting its damage which might change next patch so waiting to see.

dark knight: its edgy warrior with a shit ton more damage and less overarching mitigation with emphasis on magic damage mitigation which depending on the fight can be a godsent or straight up useless. rotation is simple but you have to manage both mana and blood so its pretty engaging. would not mind if they separated dark arts from tbn taking away its mp cost but also making it a 30 second mitigation but thats just me who likes using mitigation for reasons other than damage. the ranged and aoe skills needing spell speed is still annoying but it doesnt hurt the job that much now that blood weapon has stacks.

Gunbreaker: got too clunky in endwalker but the mitigation got better. the rotation was near perfect in shadowbringers but now its bloated and strict and has way too many ogcds which makes it annoying to mitigate or move the boss. please if nothing else remove hypervelocity and make double down a 1 cartrige skill while going back to 2 cartriges again. will make the rotation less annoying if you die aswell. extra points if you make burst strike a ranged attack so moving the boss isnt as annoying.

  16. Gunbreaker is similar in concept to dark knight in how both are busy button mashy dps jobs, but I love gnb and despise drk because gnb feels much more structured, it flows super smoothly and feels like each attack had a purpose, like it was from me doing something such as continuation procs. drk feels incredibly messy and they just sorta throw a bunch of things at you and you just sorta push them with no real flow or plan

  17. Good vid! I think you're one of the only people I've seen mention that PLD has lost so much of its defense in comparison to the other tanks. I still see people talking about it being the defensive King, like yeah maybe 4-6 years ago it was lmao.

I think tank preferences really depend on the type of player, who you play with, and if you're gonna do something harder than Aglaia.

Personally, I swapped to tanks after maining the healers during ShB. I like them all for different situations. WAR is my main, i guess, since it is the one I cleared P4S on. And with our newbie healers, I honestly don't think I could have chosen a better tank. It's pretty flexible and not complicated, so it was great for me as a newer tank trying to focus on learning my role and learning the fights blind.

PLD is fun but it is defensively weak, and I would not want to optimize it during savage with its strict rotation. My cotank's performance really suffered when she needed to adjust for the group's needs, and frequently I was using Nascent Flash on cooldown for her.

DRK is fun too because it feels like a busier WAR, but I would never play it with my untrustworthy healers lol. If you have good healers, it's worth a try at least. It's good during a fight that i know well because i can plan its mitigation better.

GNB i think is fun in Fates and solo play, I just don't enjoy it if I need to tank for people. Just imagining weaving a reprisal in during burst window gives me hives.

  18. So when it comes to casual content (As of 6.1), Warrior is definitely the best tank by far. Its Damage is fine, which definitely doesn't matter in normal content, but its self-sustainability is unrivaled. Its ease of use is also a huge plus where its the go-to tank for first time tank players.

Criterion will obviously change the high-end content perspective, but currently Dark Knight is the best tank in high end content. Being the most used in Extremes, DSR (by far), and second in savages for tanks for EW. It is also the most used class overall (dps tanks healers) in DSR. Its use is insane, and with it being the highest damage tank, its the best choice.

  19. As a PLD player, one thing I will note, is in EW it is very fun to play, syncing down to UWU, there is something to be desired on the mitigation front. The Job gauge feels more like a limitation than a reward for building gauge if you consider that the other tanks' shortest CD isn't on a gauge unless you count DRK's MP as it wouldn't have it's newest one at that level.

  20. I like tanks, but they do all feel like the whole "60s burst" issue hurts them the most.

The game just really needs a drastic shift to how cooldowns and OGCDs really work. I unironically think DRK is the most well designed Jobs in the game, purely because alot of their skills are tied to Charges, Gauges or MP. MP especially if something completely ignored, despite the fact it can act as a flexible cooldown timer.
Imagine if DRG could have High Jump tied to MP (or TP if MP can't be tied to physical skills due to spaghetti code). You could hold Jump for a long time until you NEED it or when you can USE it, and eliminate cooldown drift entirely.

  21. For tanks i would usually go more toward GNB but i started playing PLD alot recently and i fully enjoy what pld brings to the table and that fantasy of being a holy knight really shows in its gameplay and that's why ive come to love it but when it comes to dmg Ill favor GNB more times than naught

  22. They changed Inner Release so it Chaos/Cyclone don’t use stacks anymore. It’s perfectly acceptable to use Infuriate under IR now as long as you can still use all 3 stacks before the timer runs out and you don’t overcap your Beast Gauge.

  23. While both dark knight and gunbreaker do have more problems with managing their defensives during bursts, I’d say dark knight is much better in that regard as you can move your Edges/Floods and even a Shadowbringer around in your burst to create room for other cooldowns while gunbreakers are forced into using Continuation after most of their burst buttons, creating less weave windows, with only Double Down and Sonic Break giving them some breathing space

  24. One thing I would also add to dark Knight is the leveling. Dark Knight before you get TBN at level 70 is honestly the worst of the tanks, dark mind is dead in the water and that means you’re only gonna have Sheltron, Shadowall, Arms length and Reprisal. Which really isn’t a lot compared to just about every other tank.

  25. Hey all! Correction on the IR/Infuriate interaction. I forgot that with the stack change that was fixed. Shadowbringers habits die hard it seems.

    Can use them without peril!

  26. So I’m trying to go thru and max each class when I was leveling sage, DRK was the worst to heal, and now I can see why it has a massively higher skill cap than the other three, gunbreaker was a close second.
