I'm sorry imo JP voices are so much better. I switched and never looked back.
Something that's more clear in Athena's Japanese dialogue: that might have been Themis's actual soul. The one stored, and then used up, in the Crystal Tower. This implies that Hydaelyn brought his soul home to the Source once he sent us on our way, like she did with Hades.
Rough translation of her dialogue after P9:
"And… I'll send another guide your way later on.
"I thought the soul I got was too full of holes to be used,
"but with the memories I've just gotten, I may be able to fix it a bit…"
I really felt bad for Themis. I usually play my WoL as snarky, but instead of choosing the "I'd hate to wipe the floor with Elidibus again," snarky option, I chose the "…" because he did not want to do this to the kid. Giving him this closure felt good. I can imagine the soul of Azem within felt a little lighter after this speech.
The English voice acting has improved vastly over the years, but I've definitely preferred the Japanese voices far more.

Something to note is that this voice was used for Elidibus throughout the whole game, to the point it felt off at other times. However a lot of the reason this felt off is that he is a somewhat different character in Japanese. This goes for almost every character, most famously the more muscle-lusting Haurchefaunt, and the much less tomboy-based Alisaie, but even others like Minfilia and Thancred are very different at times. And here, Themis is no exception. His speech is somewhat changed from Japanese, fitting the language better, but changing stuff all together. A lot of people want to say already that Japanese voices are better, however this isn’t a case like FFVII, VIII or X where the translation was just horrendously botched, no the translation falls more into an adaptation of the language and scenes. It’s not inaccurate, but different in its entirety even if to a minimalistic degree. This is also something people have noticed with FF16, where aside from Japanese and French, every version uses a translation of the English script, but those two are a variation of the original script before it was put into English, remade to be more fitting with the English scenes. Adaptation, not proper translation, a harder art this and 16 both do amazingly imo. This is why I’ll always use English as my primary language in these games, as English was made and adapted specifically for the language, while Japanese was made in and for that language. There is no better or worse, but rather what you prefer.

Themis's English voice, here, is a classic example of a very good performance that is, nevertheless, inappropriate for the character. I can see how they thought they had painted themselves into a corner with their casting choice for Elidibus, but if I were in charge, I would have bitten the bullet and cast a different actor to do Themis in Pandæmonium in English. Having a single VA do old Elidibus & this Themis in Japanese does not mean one has to do the same in English.
In their defense, the probably casted the English VA for Elidibus before we knew how young he was.
I know plenty of short guys with light frames like this with a deep voices. I get what your saying but I have those kinds of people in my life so I wasnt thrown off like everyone else.
I think they both sound great. They each suit their language well.
Some people saying his voice is too old or too deep but I don’t hear it. Just because he looks young doesnt mean he cant have a deep voice.
He has a very refined and soft demeanor and both languages convey that well.

After being shown how smol Elidibus was before we imprisoned him in the CT, showing how young he really was when he joined the Convocation, I was under the impression that the voice he used all this time was his pre Sundering self choosing that voice, its timbre and baritone vibrato, to prove that he could stand alongside his Convocation contemporaries, to be as mature as them in his role as Emissary of Balance in Etheirys. Most male adults have a deeper voice then their teen self, after all.
Then, as we learned more about the World Unsundered and the Ascians' origins, it became a sign of how zealous to the mission of Rejoining he had become when we first saw each other, how much he believed in Zodiark and his potential to return the star to its "proper course."
Tldr; the "femboy" JP voice fits pre Sundering Themis and his relative naivete to the Convocation, while ENG voice fits post Sundering Elidibus, perfectly reflecting the accpetance of all he has done since, from Rejoining #1 to our fight atop the Crystal Tower in SHB, as well as conveying pure tiredness from do so for 12,000 or so years.
The Japanese voice is also the same as Kaworu from Evangelion…
Which is probably why they had him on a the moon a lot early on.
To be honest I think the biggest issue with his voice isn't even the casting or voice actors fault.. the FF14 community has an unhealthy and unrealistic view on men with a love for Femboys.. real life men can have this type of voice at the age of 20 and Elidibus is most likely around 20(which is practically a child for an ancient) honestly his voice is perfect in the English dub and frankly it fits his type of character.. tbh this obsession with femboys in this game really kinda attacks masculinity in characters which is kinda annoying when you hate seeing every character male and female be sexualized through the rough when the writers are trying to write a good story and character.
Now, is that Japanese voice the same one used for Elidibus in Shb? (I'll go check that out after I post this)
It's obvious that in the English version in Shb they went with a more deeper voice to emphasize Elidibus' sense of menace and control since he was the antagonist and for English media that is the way they tend to want to make them sound as.
NA takes a more "realistic" age appropriate sounding voice, basically.
Obviously, we later find out Elidibus is actually a "younger" person than the rest of the Ascians but I wonder how it would come off in Japanese if Elidibus, in Shb, sounded as he does here because he was older looking in his white rob version and in Ardbert's body, I don't think this voice would match those looks then. My 2 cents.
Either way, besides their sounds, the 2 actors did a great job and I will admit the Japanese one sounds more appropriate for Themis' look in EW.
My own playthrough is with Japanese VAs since they use alot of VAs I’m familiar with from anime. But hearing the English I’m always stunned how good the performances are.
