I also learned that depending on the security of your failure to meld, that the explosion and sound effect get louder and more obnoxious.

I like to just grind out level one materia. They'll sell for a few thousand depending on the type. It's a surprisingly pleasant passive income I can generate with low level accessories while I'm gathering materials or something.

When i overmeld for a friend : got 3 overmeld under 15 materias. True story
When i overmeld for myself : got 2 overmeld for more than 80 materias. Also true story.
I never do overmeld for myself ever again.

Sometimes I get super lucky but every so often bad luck comes and punches me outta left field. So I got superstitious and will keep the materia in my saddle bag and pull it out in lots of 5 or 10 to trick the game into thinking I don’t have a lot so it doesn’t need to break 50-100 to reduce number of items. It’s dumb but it’s my superstition and it feels like it works most of the time 😂
