FFXIV Kicking a Hornets Nest of Problems with Add-ons?

Final Fantasy XIV started enforcing it’s add-on policy and some got caught, but this raises questions and challenges for Square-Enix and the FFXIV devs to solve. Does Discord count as an add-on?

  1. I think the bans are ridiculous. You can’t openly turn a blind eye to something for years and then all of a sudden start enforcing it. At least release something stating what’s about to happen to give people a chance to adjust.

  2. If Square made the servers better or made double weaving accessible to players regardless of server proximity, and if they added a DPS meter in the manner Brian and Chris said, I would no longer use either of the add-ons I use. As it stands, I can't play at my best without either, and that just isn't fun for me.

  3. For years, I've been saying people who use third party parsers are cheating because they're gaining an unintended advantage by breaking a rule . That's the definition of cheating. Truth be told, people who use a parser to clear content have cheated themselves and others; they are "wearing titles" they don't deserve.

Brief bans aren't going to stop this and, as our hosts noted, and can actually benefit violators. My suggestion: SE should 1) delete the character that is active when the offense is committed and prohibit the violating account from employing jump potions for a year, forcing the violator to start over. Further, SE should add in an-game, private parser that nobody else can see unless the player specifically shares it with a specific other player.

Chris, your hammers analogy is invalid. Yes, toxicity is against the rules, so disallowing parsers because they can foster toxicity is pointless. But, using a parser is against the rules as well. You're saying some rules should be enforced, and others not. That's a recipe for disaster.

  4. I love your honesty guys, i too use a Parse, not to give anyone agro, but for self improvment and some harmless competition amongst my static group. Although YoshiP doesnt want to consider a parse related system ingame, (i respect that to a point) he will have to research the progrqmmes used and the reasons why… Implementation of these things ingame seems to be the only resolve imo.

  5. I'm pretty sure yoshi p has made his stance on dps meters clear. I'd be very, VERY surprised if he changes his mind.
If they can take some of the graphical/quality of life add ons and incorporate the spirit of some of them into the game as the lodestone post alluded to, that'd be great though.

  6. I do think 10 days is excessive for the first time, but this is what happens when you make it hot. Using a blatant cheating add-on on stream was really pushing it. I hope what comes of this is implementing more accessiblility upgrades.

  7. I completely agree with the FF14 devs. It's best for everyone if add-ons (specifically the DPS meters) stay away and remain punishable. I've seen too much toxicity from people with them. Even with that said, they're still fairly lenient. You just have to not be public with it all, usually. How it is seems fine right now. No need to change what ain't broke.

For the "toxicity is already there" argument, I would say sure, but that doesn't mean we have to put weapons in the hands of potential (metaphorical) murderers. Sometimes, simply having rules is enough to deter many people. It's the same reason we have laws put in place for real life. We take all rules away and the closet-bad people will burst out. Same with FF14. Rules are in place for a reason. Saying "bad people will be bad" isn't enough and undermines all the work the FF14 team has put in to keep the game a lovely place to be for everyone. As I said, it's fine as is.

  8. It be nice if SE added a window that pops after a dungeon or raid that tells you your performance kinda like the stats window after a pvp match but it's just your own stats

  9. To be fair you can have bots run through discord that do call outs in fights done strictly through discord which is technically what the world first guy got banned for. I don’t think it’s people joking so much as trying to make a point on how vague the TOS of this game has.

  10. OK Guys correct me if I am wrong but as far as I heared the problem with the banned people was not ACT but more an ADD On that showed Buff and debuff timers wich makes a certian debuff interaction in the Dragonsong a lot easier. But I am not sure on that, its more what I took from a lot of sources for the bans.

  11. Youtube and Balance discord for improvement. Stone, Sky, Sea to know if you are ready for content. Listen to other people who want to give you tips and help you out. Ask questions. Your arguments come from a place of attachment to the way you've always done it. You feel threatened and are lashing out. DPS meters are not needed. Ultimates are cleared every day by console players.

  12. I would like to see my dps, heal, and damage mitigated numbers at the end. I also think they could put the number of your top number for the duty and see where you stand per class. I think they could add this into the log section and allow us to view the last 3 to 5 entrys for each duty allowing you to see where you did the best and what classes or fights you need to work ok. If they wanted to go crazy with it they could break it down further into each encounter. I agree dps meters can be toxic but if you don't have a toxic nature it can benefit the group.

  13. Yes, the ones who have no desire to improve their gameplay abilities or rotations should just run Trust. I strive to be a good player for my jobs, mainly to not let my teammates in whatever party I'm in down. That feels not just right, but the whole point to me… doing trash dps because I don't want to put any effort into it means I need to keep my ass in solo content. If you want to run with other players, strive to actually helpfully contribute, not do the bare minimum…

  14. It is getting really sickening to see so many people wanting to always blame the WoW vets. Every time there is a problem there are always several comments blaming the WoW refugees. I have even seen people do it in game. And yea I was one of the worried players that worried it would bring the WoW toxicity to FFXIV. However; Many WoW players who came over really have enjoyed not NEEDING addons. Yea you got some like Limit who honestly made it worse by bringing that mentality to FFXIV. But if you look at other players (Rich, Asmon, Quazii, Preach) and others they are totally with the No addons. Also the addons have been being used since before the huge WoW exoduses. I know we want to blame these problems on the WoW players, but in all honesty it isnt them. Most WoW players left WoW because of crap like addons. The problem are the players who agree to a ToS without reading it, then complain when they are being told they are breaking the ToS they signed (sometimes 10 years ago). A great example is Xenosys Vex. He is a great example of the FFXIV playerbase that complains when they are being told they are breaking the ToS. ANd he is in no way a WoW player, he has been in FFXIV since the begining. So if we wanna solve this problem lets actually target those who are really creating this problem, and not the WoW players. (Also I really dont think the issue here was dps parsers. It was cactbot which I tried once to see how it worked and yea it calls out a whole fight. FFXIV fights are scripted they are not hard if you know what is coming up next (well not AS HARD ults are still hard but lets be real that reduces the difficulty by a large %) This is what I heard was being used in some Ultimate clears. And that makes the world race actually illegitamet. It is like having a marathon where some people are using rollerblades instead of running. Even though it might be a small boost, it is still an advantage. But in short let's stop with the witch hunt against the wow players. Instead let's actually call out those who are really responsible, regardless of the game they came from. As for Yoshii P, I think he has deserved the respect to follow the rules he has placed for the game. Every one of his rules has had a purpose behind it, and it is one of the reasons the community is so good. I will be the first to admit if I could I probably would become toxic when running end game content with a player that is not ready for it. Instead of being polite when they keep dying to the same mechanic in a farm party I would probably be a lot ruder. The rules keep my in check, and I am sure it keeps a lot of other players in check too.

  15. I don’t really have anything much to say about the more significant add ons (dps parsers, tts call-outs for mechanics etc), but I think some of the qol add ons are great, and arguably things that ffxiv should have natively. My first mmo I played in 2006 had text speech bubbles, for example; and many other games have far better Color blind options. I do hope square consider adding some of these kind of features to the game (and to be fair they do mention they are looking into this, potentially).

  16. As a console player, i'm not really bothered by add-ons and stuff. But for me, i feel like one of the factors that SE has why add-ons are not exactly being 'supported' is that it'll give a certain kind of advantage for PC players over Console players. Unlike WOW which is a primarily PC game, FFXIV is also a console game, which is probably why SE are being a bit iffy about third party add-ons as the last thing SE would want to do is alienate the console players due to being more lenient to add-ons that will only be available to PC players.

  17. While its true toxic ppl will be toxic, why provide tools to enable their toxicity. Currebtly if they wan to beat some one up with a hammer, some might refrain cos hammer is illegal. By legalising the hammer, they just will say the hammer is illegalise so i just using yhe tools provide u to beat u up. Some wont even say anything n kick u if they see u parse lowly. By not providing a means to do so, they have no concrete reason to remove u

One can say why attempt this why u suck.
My feel of the game is tat this game allows of both hc and casual to enjoy the content. Why provide a gate ppl to use to gate keep ppl from trying harder content

  18. Ps5 player here so addons don't affect me but if they did a personal dps meter (only showing ur dps) and update the ui for the timers debuff/buff/cds and make it more user friendly some things are a real pain in the ass lol.
Hopefully they address these things the rp chat bubbles and stuff like that don't hurt any1but they could add it to the game.
But triggers and stuff like that should be addressed because if it is wide spread enough what happens when the dev team choose to design a fight because of them. u will get wow eventually

  19. People who think Discord is a third party add-on is engaging in a bad faith argument. The same goes for the people who are going after gshade and other tool assists for non-combat purposes. They know EXACTLY what YoshiP is talking about. It's not your add-on that makes it easier to compose and coordinate songs. It's that add-on that's literally shouting "STACK" in your face along with showing you what the next 3 or 4 mechanics are.

  20. I think it's fine to use shadesrs, harmless mods, qol features (that don't give you a advantage), dps meters

My problem is when u force players to use them (maybe outside where dps checks are important its kinda hard to not implement dps meters and have dps checks and not know why) or others are getting benefits that play the game for them

  21. Nice that they’re considering adding some of the more popular QoL/Accessibility/UI add-ons into the game, but in the meantime I think we desperately need a TOS update clarifying that these types of things are allowed. No one in their right mind is going to wait till next expansion for reasonable colourblind settings or the UI options to graduate beyond “decade old MMO desperately in need of a sustainability update”.

Also the game could really benefit from a full DPS meter (or allowing it as an add on, of course). Encouraging Self improvement is obviously a benefit, but if your group keeps failing the DPS check then obviously something needs to be looked at in your group as a whole.Toxicity is already something you can be punished for, so worrying about that seems more like a misguided attempt at removing any potentially negative interaction between people at all, which sorry to say isn’t going to happen in any social situation without just removing the social aspect entirely.

Last point is just to reply to a lot of the “then don’t stream with them/don’t stream at all” comments I’ve seen. Okay, but is that really what you want? World first players aren’t going to just remove all their add ons for prog/the race, they just won’t stream. So do you really want us not to have a major world first race at all? Do you want FFXIV to go back to the “MMO with no endgame” meme among the greater MMO space and just be viewed as a single player RPG that happens to have other players around? Streaming is free advertising, and explicitly not advertising to hardcore endgame players (which is the kind of group that is only really going to be swayed by something like world’s first ultimate) feels like the Square Enix shooting itself in the foot.
