Howdy Brian
I unsubbed and within a month got a survey from SE asking whats wrong. Also asking about fanfest. Which makes me think viewership was down.
For me, it’s more the lack of a rewarding grind, and because of the boring monotony along with the narrowing of classes and the narrow minded methodology to almost EVERY fight, it no longer gets me untreated to log in. I merely keep the sub going to get the fix handled on occasion. The game is already dead to me.
Criticism is valid as long as people stick to that and not bashing. If the game changes it will only be through players voting with their wallet and saying why. But I think there's way more people like me that think the game is mostly fine but could be better too.
I…thought you already did? Like 6-9 months ago? As I said before, do what is best for you. Just try not to insult anyone. I think that's just good life advice. : ) I watched Happy's final verdict/assessment (his personal one) of EW and felt I pretty much agreed with him. I say do what's good for you and try not to be down on people. Long as one does that, good times. Hope you're loving this (for now) pleasant Texas weather! If you haven't, you might give Haps' video a watch. I thought it was fair, though maybe it's just 'cause I agree with it…but I don't think so. Come back refreshed in DT! 😀
What sucks for people playing FFXIV is not about it being solo friendly. Queues are GOD AWFUL on Dynamis NA, so imagine it was not solo player friendly. The number 1 reason for people quitting old mmos imo is probably that queues are taking hours and there's no way to solo the content. So they can't progress.
We can have more group content, im all for that. But in terms of MSQ is should be completely solo friendly.
I personally feel Yoshi P has a huge blind spot for FF11 or outright hates it. He definitely has a strong preference for 1-6
Also, I get it's different being a content creator for sure. You need content so people will click videos so you can feed your family. Nothing wrong with understanding that. It's like you say with the Mog Station, it'd be stupid for a business NOT to do that if the demand is there (and it, apparently, is, despite me personally not liking it).
One thing that does get me when people complain about game systems and stuff – not you, this is just me doing a general semi-rant – the game has arguably been this way since SB.
When something is the same for years and then people start complaining about those things, it makes me think their issue is more burnout than it is the things they're listing. It's like someone in a relationship saying that something has changed, but then listing things that haven't changed in years as their reasons. While perhaps not true in ALL cases, that's often because there was either long-standing dislike and it just finally reached a breaking point, OR that those things weren't the problem then and aren't the problem now, the person's mind (because we're interesting beings who have a tendency to have to justify things to ourselves) needs reasons other than "It's not you, it's me", and so grabs a bunch of things that might be minor annoyances but aren't actually their present reasons and just bundles them together to justify their current dislike of the situation, when in fact those things AREN'T ultimately the problem.
For example, people mention Jobs being dumbed down, but when you ask them, they talk about the removal of Cleric Stance as a toggle. That happened six YEARS ago at the end of HW/beginning of SB. That isn't an EW change. That kind of thing, if you get my meaning?
There's less to do in downtime/content droughts, I think, but the fundamentals of the game haven't changed since SB except in a few cases. Likewise, Jobs haven't changed much since SB except in a few cases (SCH and SMN come to mind, but not many others). The fight design, cadence, Job design, etc has pretty much been this way for 6+ years now. One might argue they're running out of ways they can combine the basic stack/spread/light parties mechanics, but these mechanics have been around since SB, if not HW…if not ARR. If anything, that's more the issue; they're trying to combine a limited set of mechanics in ways that mask them and make them feel fresh and new while trying to add new things to the aged (and pretty rigid) combat engine. But the point remains, they're the same things people have done for a decade. Why was this okay until 2 years ago, but then suddenly not?
WITH A FEW EXCEPTIONS, Job design hasn't changed much, either. Most Jobs work very much as they did in SB. That was when Job gauges were added, when a lot of the older systems of ARR and HW were streamlined or removed (remember when missing a positional on Melee meant your combo didn't register so you had to start from 1- all over again?). SB is where you get the modern versions of most Jobs more or less as they exist today. WAR, for example, reached its more or less modern form in late SB. Most of those that didn't were changed in ShB, not EW. SCH was changed then, WAR was changed by the end of SB, MCN and NIN were changed in ShB, etc. RDM has been more or less the same since it was introduced, just adding another stinger to the end of its combo and balancing. WHM has been the same since 5.0, and was arguably (ARGUABLY, I did a deep dive on this once) more complex in 5.0 than it was in 4.X; you actually hit Stone more per minute in SB than Glare in EW, and there's some optimization to do around Misery; the issue is that we don't use GCD heals anymore optimally, and so that's what actually makes it feel more monotomous since we do healing with oGCDs, making them "seem" like not a break, unlike casting Cure 2 or Medica back in the day would be. WHM is, also, somewhat ironically, the least Glare-spammy of the healers due to Lilies. That dubious "honor" goes to SCH, which has no reason to use Ruin 2 in optimal play anymore, so it's just Broil IV all the way down. AST is about as bad, but more oGCD juggling makes it feel less so.)
Aligning buffs already existed, a version of the 2 min meta already existed (just many Jobs were excluded).
The only real exceptions to this were PLD and SMN (changed in EW), MNK (changed in late ShB and into EW), and…that's kind of it. The PLD changes have been GENERALLY well received/liked, the SMN changes have been very well liked by the general community (and very hated by the vocal online community, which is…a weird dichotomy), and the MNK changes have been really well received. So of the EW changes there, most have been liked, not hated, with one being very divisive but having a lot of fans. (AST also changed, but it has changed LITERALLY every expansion to date.)
The 2 min meta we all hate, but it was already something kind of existing in ShB, it just excluded Jobs that didn't have/conform to it.
The only really major changes from ShB to EW – and really SB to EW – were (a) the story told, (b) the setting, (c) the patch cadence (2 weeks longer now + an extra 2-4 weeks holiday for the Devs per year, something the community cheered at the time it was announced), and (d) the available rewarding grindy side content (Eureka+HoH vs Bozja+Ishgard Restoration vs Island + Orthos + Criterion), and it wasn't that EW was so much lacking there in terms of the content so much as there were less rewards people wanted, less return during content droughts grind potential, etc. They actually tried a lot of experimental things to break out of the rut they've been in since SB, but as is often the case with trying new things, a lot of them didn't pan out well – though pretty much everyone liked what Criterion COULD BE, which is probably why Yoshi P says they're going to keep making them and look at the reward structure and stuff.
.
Like, seriously, you do you – before you call this a wall of text, at least read this part – nothing wrong with that.
I'm just consistently confused by people citing as reasons for the game's "decline" things that have been true for approximately half its lifetime already…
I've had issues with Fusion's commentary on the game for the past 2 years or so. He comes off as entirely disparaging and full of complaint after complaint. It's a stark difference between your commentary and his own because you always offer potential insight or a different outlook on situations whereas Fusion only complains without every praising anyything good or offering potential solutions. It feels like a fine line between criticism and commentary versus just straight abashing and hate. Maybe my take but only ever being negative never helps anything. Fusion for sure needs to step back.
Unsubbed, tried HorizonXI and was reminded that I can actually play that game casually 😂😂😂
I am excited for Dawntrail. I always have taken sorta breaks from the game. I currently am doing some of the tome grind for iterants because the new concept is pretty neat. Though which could do the ultimate one more than once. Was fun to do ocean fishing again. I think the idea they have with it is good, just needs polish.
I feel the biggest problem with EW was some of the new ideas they tried fell kinda flat. While I enjoyed Island Sanctuary, it didnt quite pan out as people had hoped. Variant and uh forget the name of the other type, while good, didnt have the staying power. really wish they had tied the relic to it. The new deep dungeon that everyone wanted, seems to of been a minor success at most. Like I hate when people say they didn't add content, the phrase might be better put "they didnt add content that was for you". Going back and adding all those trusts to the old MSQ dungeons presumably took up a lot of resources, part of the reason why i think teh relic steps ended up as just tome grinds, and why we got no eureka/bozja. Add in the graphics update, which for a game with as much content as it already has, to go back and update all that has got to be consuming a lot too.
Overall EW was fine for me. I personally enjoyed the Zero story enough. Could that msq part of been better, sure. Did I enjoy it because of FFIV nostalgia, probably. But as Preach pointed out, Zero, and Golbez may be back later. Dawntrail for me is exciting because new place to explore, and am curious to see what the future holds for a game i love, and been playin since Nov 2013. In the meantime, will do some mog tome grind, go back do content i never finished, or didnt do at all. Mount farm some mounts maybe, and all the while go play Diablo IV, Last Epoch, and other games coming out. I like the looks of Nightinggale.
I love playing the expansions for a few months, then putting the game down for a year or so. I love playing FFXIV but never really feel like grinding the same activities for months at a time. At this point I think I’m mostly an MSQ player and it totally works for me.
Also, then I get to experience other games
The incentive issue is really true. It feels like its massively changed the way I engage with the game as a whole and despite enjoying a lot of what I get to do and the community that's built up around it there is no question it takes a toll. The other issue is good health or no FFXIV is a niche of a niche which limits the amount you can ever really grow if its all you do. Despite all that still in love with the game personally -Elioaux.
As a longtime fan of Square Enix, I've been a bit disappointed in where they are now. Overall, I still love their games, but the way they sometimes run their business just gives the vibes that anyone that isn't in Japan is just a second-class fan. I still have a bitter taste in my mouth with how they handled the FF pixel remaster shadow drop (I got one and I'm still upset the way they did it).
Endwalker has the biggest whiplash of quality/quantity compared to Shadowbringers and SHB wasn’t perfect by any means.
The 2-minute meta forcing a 1 size fit all and forcing of a completely unnecessary rework of Paladin to fit into the 2 minute meta. Where they dumbed down, simplified and homogenized the jobs.
Myths of the realm lore wise was amazing fight design wise was completely lack luster and a letdown compared to Void Arc and Ivalice.
Pandaemonium had fun fights, getting more depth with Lahabreaha, Eric, and saying goodbye to Themis. (P6 & P7 we’re the biggest letdowns of the raid)
Variant and criterion while nice, Criterion and Criterion Savage Fight design was refreshing but it heavily lacks satisfying rewords, they tried with the last one but it still a missed the mark.
Relic have been one of the biggest disappointments, doing Fate, Doing XYZ dungeons and/or Raids form the Previous Expansion went to a quest where if you have 1500 tomestone you can finish the quest before you even started it and get your shiny tomestone weapons.
I don’t log really log into endwalker not because of burn out but because of when I do, what’s there of substance that want to make me log in.
Hello ^^
I know how it feels to be on this point where everything is just frustrating in FFXIV and I've took a break for several months, now I'm slowly coming back… but I'm still jumping between 3 MMO's and some Offline games. And it feels good. I'm really stoked for Dawntrail and can't wait to dive into the story^^ with my female Hrothgar then^^. But this advantages for Japan in case of merch… this is what I've observed with nearly all asian games… they put their ppl always above NA and EU…. I don't like this either… nor do I like the absolute ridicilous prices at the square enix store…
100% agree. SC content creator Salt-E-Mike is 100% the kind of person who should NEVER play an alpha like Star Citizen. He is very impatient, cannot handle the bugs & missing features and is extremely ignorant about the game development process. But Star Citizen gets him the views. He forces himself to play a game he hates more and more every day. So it's been like watching him go down this toilet bowl of hate. He despises his viewers, the game to the point that he felt the need to change his name from Twerk to Salt-E-Mike.
But he cannot stop. He can never stop. His entire livelihood is based on a game he can't stand. To the point his audience left is primarily people who don't play, they just want to hate on tor vent about he game. Meanwhile other content creators who love the game and are passionate about it pass him by like he's sitting still. I do not want to watch a man torture himself for 6 hours to play a game he hates. If he stops playing and covering it, he loses everything.
Now he's so thin skinned, angry and jaded. He is putting his need to make money over all else. He's dsperately chasing this dream of playing games but it's turned to shit. He is putting that dream above his mental health. Hoping the next patch or the next year will be "the year" where everything magically changes but it never will.
The man despises people who have things like the 890 Jump and has said so several times. He claims he supports the developers but he's called them stupid, morons, and more. He cannot stand people who disagree with him or still enjoy the game. He's just broken inside. He 100% blames CIG for his lack of success. He started another YouTube channel where he primarily just shits on people who enjoy the game.YouTube's algorithm rewarding hate over praise isn't helping him. He's now bringing that hate to other channels.
He has put thousands of hours into the game. A normal person would get bored and take a break for a patch, or a year or two. He can't. So I just see him as this sad, pathetic man. He can't even cover the news without that cynicism, anger and hate coming out. He should never play Star Citizen as an alpha. He can't handle the roller coaster ride.
Your mental health should be more important. I follow you for SC content, but.your happiness should be more important than what I want to see. If people unsubscribe, that's fine. It happens. Follow your passion and the audience will find you. You have the right mindset.
Thanks for sharing Brian 🙏. Glad I didn't drink the kool aid on housing…it's a subscriber retention tool…..I'm sure SQEX uses housing vacancies as a KPI.
ALSO to go back to the older MMO format(s) is a fools errand in my view …. hell I'd like to go back too but jeez….. the number of hours it took to form parties in FFXI O_o and the penalties for death, good times yes, and communicating with people…..this is what I think made it special and what I think this guy misses too.
I felt that in Overwatch 1 (not 2 yes I am sad 😭 don't remind me) , the team in a competitive match (typically) had vested interest in winning and something at stake…..in FFXIV….there are few stakes and MMO players are very focused on their time.
TLDR time to take a break it's a game and find something else to play or do….heck FFXIV should have a gym feature (or partnership with planet fitness for XP?) that's something a good number of people (including myself ) would benefit ….😏
I really feel him and understand him all the way, because this is how I felt, but I'm giving DT a chance to change my mind and if I see no big changes then I will have to quit.
