  1. The other funny thing with this theme there is a 3rd version. "Forbidden Archives (Ink Long Dry)" Piano. Comparing the two it feels more lively and somewhat funky in a way. Plus the reasoning it is like that is due to the civilisation that used to live in Dravania (Sharlyan Scholars) eventually abandoned the area leaving behind the library itself as well as what remains of the settlement.

    The 3rd version however plays during specific moments of the story when you visit the City, Old Sharlyan which takes place 3 expansions after Ink Long Dry (Normal/Hard). If you are able to squeeze it in, i'd like to see your reaction to that piece as this is still fresh in the mind.

  2. You kind of nailed the vibe with this one. It's trying to be unwelcoming. It's a place that's been sealed away for decades and it's grandeur is long gone, replaced by a haunted legacy.

    When you brought up Mortal Instants, I remembered some thoughts I had on that reaction but never shared. I think it and tracks sharing its motifs tend to get overhyped by fans. Don't get me wrong, it's one of my favorite tracks in the game, but what makes it good is the associated context of 300+ hours of story. And sometimes it's easy to forget that someone without that context isn't going to have the same appreciation when purely listening to the music.

  3. I love this theme, the chaotic first theme fits well with the library being overrun by the local wildlife I think. Second is is very melodic, I mean… piano, and more sinister as the library is cleaned by the player the first time, suddenly stuff from the (state underfunded yet mandatory) forbidden sector of the library start to wreak havoc inside there.

I remember my first time running Gubal and the music starting and I immediately got chills, it really felt like the song was fighting itself in attempting to make a coherant song, almost like the library is now suddenly needing to prepare itself for its brand new guests that they havent had in so long

    In Hard mode, it felt like the library was welcoming you back, guiding you to look for the new knowledge you were seeking

  5. Oh hey Bibliophobia, a track my FC uses in our group house (or at least did idr if we've swapped it out). We like to keep calmer music in our FC house lol. Also Bibliophobia with its strings and piano always remind me of Yoko Shimomura's work on the KH series.

  6. Man, I know not how many times I've been through the normal version of the dungeon but I had NO idea it sounded that 'broken'. Yet had you made me listen to it without context I would likely have been able to recognize it as Great Gubal.

    The Hard one really feels like it was ripped right out of Kindom Hearts to me.

  7. I'm glad you got to hear this one. I know the first version is a little chaotic, but ya there is context that you are missing. For me its one of those songs that i do like because its so unique. It totally fits in with the story and setting.

This was before the "incident" with Soken happened, so people were already used to show footage with the songs to induce a mood I guess, but in the expansion after this some people actually uploaded songs that were from exclusive savage difficulty more fights without footage because they hadn't been able to get there, and Soken got annoyed about it (it was on the last phase of Dancing Mad actually), so people understood that it's kinda expected as a courtesy to show that you're actually putting in the effort to get there and actually run through the content. Those days in the recent expansions Square Enix has also cracked down regularly on uploads of music especially the most recent ones not yet available on spotify, so including gameplay into it is even more of a requirement now.

    A good way to think of the hard versions of dungeons are the second visit to them so in this instance it was a sealed library and the second pass was after we'd cleared out a lot of the dark entities within

  11. Imagine if you will, a city fallen into disrepair after it was abandoned by the scholars who inhabited it 10 years ago within a single night. You come here in search of Matoya, your friend's master and the keeper of the secrets left behind in the hurry. The information you require from her is held in a tome, hidden in the center of a library full of familiars and mammets (mechanical creations fueled by magic) left there to guard it, as well as magical beings who somehow made their way inside or were created by dangerous tomes, left unatended for too long.
    You make your through the chaos, smashing the guards left and right to get to your goal on this surreal adventure. And after that, you leave in hopes to never see the place again, trusting that Matoya and your friends did well in creating replacements for the guards you "walloped".

    Alas, they did not, as you find out at a later point in time and you have to go through the place again to clean up the bigger mess you caused (hard version). A common occurance on your travels so far. You're long used to cleaning up after your prior adventures, so you make quick work of what you find. Somehow, traversing these halls is way less unsettling the second time around, the enemies something you understand, rather than sprung from a scribe's nightmares. Perhaps it is the different path you take this time. Or you might just have gotten used to the insanity that is the Sharlayan way of hiding forbidden knowledge.

  12. As a player I always feel weird with the slow, chill pieces or when they just break out into jazz. I'm not sure it would be quite right to call it 'immersion breaking' but it's an unexpected style or tone when they deviate from the standard formula. Conflicted is probably a good word for it. I don't have a solid reason to hate it but it's not like I embrace it as a rule, even if most music in FF14 is good. EDIT: This is the context of dungeon or battle music.

  13. If you're itchin' for overworld, then I'd recommend 'Divine Words' or 'The Nautlus Knoweth'. Those are both super chill and pleasant to listen. I'd also maybe selfishly recommend 'The Labrynth'. I don't think it's a popular one, but I like it.

  14. These are dungeon themes, but whenever you listen to zone or city themes, they often have a Day / Night version. So when those start coming in I'd recommend listening to both. I think you'd lose something if you came back to listen to a Night theme 4 months after a Day version. Though the Night themes are pretty soft and quiet, so that might be a weird note to end on in a video 😛

  15. I feel like the way that the hard mode one is less chaotic makes sense from the perspective of your character. The regular version is your character's first time visiting this spooky mysterious place. The hard mode version is your character returning to the place, and it's still foreboding but it's less of an unfamiliar unknown place.

  16. I would have never thought of asking for this song honestly. Yeah it's pretty unique in its own way but it never struck me as being noteworthy to listen outside of its intended purpose (IE? while being in that dungeon). Probably the fact that this game has so many outstanding songs also makes iot hard for this one just has no chances to stand out though.

  17. The vibe I get from Ink Long Dry is a turn of the century luxury liner reappeared as a ghost ship and you snuck into the first class lounge because you heard music playing. I do think it works for the setting but it's almost TOO broken and freeform even for an ancient haunted library. I do appreciate that the hard version unexpectedly gets the "fixed" version on the theme.

  18. Great Gubal Library is a huge Library that has been abandoned for decades as the schors who built it went into exodus for fear of invasion. It was left guarded only by enchanted books and ink pots and owl and frog familiars.
    The first version has you head into the basement while the hard version has you going upstairs to a much more well kept area thats more brightly lit and cleaner

  19. FFXIV is such a good 'vibe' game, just going around and chilling in your favorite areas enjoying the atmosphere and music. I've queued up for specific dungeons just because I want to hear certain songs! Playing the game, you get to enjoy all the little themes that you wouldn't really dedicate a video to, or sit down and watch on their own. A few of the FATE themes, events, etc… I nearly cried when I heard the Firmament theme for the first time!

Normal mode always felt like ambience to set the mood, like the feeling of searching for some spooky old discordant piano in a different room somewhere and thinking "will i even find someone playing when i get there." Very unsettling and interesting, but I definitely prefer hard mode as a song.

I really love Ink Long Dry because it's like the closest thing FF has to Freeform Jazz, it's like really challenging to follow, it's bizarre and mysterious a lot like the library that you're descending into, it feels like as you're passing by all these books it's constantly butting in with different vibes like different genres of said books. It's definitely one of the more experimental songs in FF, I personally love it a lot but it's kind of divisive I think.

  22. I did this dungeon on release with Heavensward in 2015 and it still continues to be one of my favorite dungeon themes to this day. An old library abandoned and riddled with ancient forbidden texts, overrun with monsters and demons for you to clear your way in search of a specific text to aid you on your journey. The theme of this is something I've always wanted to get lost in and it's something that the moment I hear that sound I remember every out of place book on the walls and every corner and dim light; it's a magical place I wish we spent more time in rather than a dungeon we slipped through for story progression. Thank you for listening, I hope more people take the time to send dungeon music!

    If I could pick a pair for you to do someday it would be Crimson Sunrise and Crimson Rise; one being a city locale theme and the other being an arrangement of it for a hardcore dungeon. I would honestly just love to see you do a compilation of comparing FFXIV's leitmotifs and if you think it was handled well or not someday — maybe after you complete the world record FFXIV music library. 😂
