Gear progression in FFXIV isn't cyclic; it's linear. There are two form of progression in mmos that I am aware of, and that's horizontal vs vertical, neither of which are cyclic. I can understand how it can feel cyclic, but your character never gets weaker unless you're synced.
The impression I get is you guys are more burned out by this system than the general playerbase whom I hear very little complaints about the system FFXIV uses. It's all just numbers, and in all honesty, the devs don't even have to increase ilvs at all. They can adjust all content past and future to certain values and just keep those, but then players won't feel like they are getting stronger.
The only way to feel like you are getting stronger like this is by upgrading existing abilities, and we kind of have that now through the various mastery systems within a given job. But an upgrade to an animation and potency on their own isn't enough to keep someone interested in playing that job.
The question I have for you guys is why do you seek a finish line? If you want to talk about burnout, how will you continue to stay motivated to play if you cross a finish line? Think of it like the Beast Tribe quests: How many players continue to do these daily quests after achieving Bloodsworn? Not many, if any.
I havenât even been gearing this patch. Just working on relic and leveling. I almost never gear unless I want to focus on Ex farming
I like gear for the cosmetics, I think armor should only improve survivability and not dmg. Only your weapon should improve your dmg but the gear shouldât give you all that much of an advantage. Your skill should matter the most when it come to dmg output.
I give casual players in game the cold hard truth about gear. Your gear & ilvl does not matter unless you're doing Raid content. Some Ex, savage, and Ultimates. Quite frankly, there's more casuals than there are raiders an EVEN more players who don't know about The Balance Discord & what is theorycrafting. If people want to learn, awesome! However, that is not the case for FFXIV's majority player base.
My favourite part of the FF14 treadmill is that, unless you're on the cutting edge of content, there actually isn't one. With tome gear, dungeon gear, 24 man gear, marketable crafted gear, etc. it's easy to catch up if you do fall behind or take some time off from the game, but it's also easy to stay at least current in gear without needing to go out of your way to "gear up." The treadmill has almost completely been relegated to the content where the treadmill is required and enforced by the content, and those who don't want to be on the treadmill aren't forced onto it.
I donât even consider the game to have a treadmill outside of savage.
Even my static (group of mixed RL and online friends) does not require buying crafting sets or whatnot. Outside of Warrior, I gear jobs with normal Eden and tomestones. Both limited per week. Thereâs no hurry or compulsion to get 20 iLvLs ASAP. For example, for questing or dailies I use Dragoon. I geared it via Eden normal. 520 is perfectly usable, and when we needed an emergency melee for E9S I was able to jump in and hold my own. We cleared it without a wipe.
In short, you can gear and do any content in the game just by roulettes or normal raids. Crafted gear. Alliance raids. You can take time off from game, come back, and catch up without any insane grind.
Ya unfortunately iv given up on 14 after this expansion for pve. I get people enjoy it, but after so many years, and knowing it won't change (it's built into the game) it feels far to much the same.
I probably will return with updates to crafts, as building up my gil at this point is all I do. Want to see if I can hit a billion đ
I like that when playing ffxiv, I don't feel any pressure in getting the best gear available unlike in wow. I can do the majority of content with the crafting gear that's available. Nowadays, with the limited amount of play time I have, I tend to care more about things that doesn't have that expiration date.
You cant make that stuff optional. Blue mage being optional is why its reviled by the community. They made it optional because they were afraid of feelings getting hurt… And like considering how accessable relics are i dont understand why they wont grow a damn pair and put additional effects on it. Like legendary effects.
I want the Relic to be equal the Savage weapons.
There is no reason why it shouldn't be for how hard you (used) to have to work to get it.
I mean the strength of relic weapons is they tend to be the strongest weapon for any content that sync your ilvl down, given it's only the case for the final version of the weapon where you can customize the stats, for example for ucob and uwr, the eureka relic weapon is considered the best weapon because you retain more secondary stats compared to a standard weapon which looses any stats from melds, otherwise relic weapons tend to give an advantage within the content it is tied to like in eureka they increase your elemental stat. Otherwise they don't have much purpose, tho what SE could do is make relic weapons stats sync upward up to say a level under the next level cap so you could do the next expansion story and that weapon would be good until the final boss.
I don't have a problem with Gear Treadmills – I get GW2 went the Cosmetic Collection Route which sounds okay I guess but it is also a game with very limited amounts of new endgame content. Coming from WoW I followed Gear Progression from the Tier 7 Item Level 200 in Wrath to the Tier 21 Level 1000 (or whatever it was pre-squish). I saw 6 different systems but was kind of always partial to the one from Wrath.
I like the way FFXIV does it. Very deterministic – unless you are relying on Raid Drops. Crafting isn't ignored. I currently have GearSets ranging from 490 to 517 and haven't missed a week farming my 450 Revelation. Will it get replaced eventually? Sure.
There's so many other things that can be done to sway off the burnout from the gear treadmill. At the least the game is not out of content to do because there's so much side stuff… but… I will admit that the Gear treadmill needs an overhaul because it's incredibly repetitive and too grindy for me (Edit: At least, for me).
The impermanence of it all is what keeps me strictly on the âwalking onlyâ portion of the treadmill. Get the minimum iLvL for the new content, enjoy the story. Maybe grind the new content for glamour or if the encounters are really fun (hello Nier Raids), otherwise play them once or twice and move on (hello Eden).
The "boredom" defense of the current gear system is pretty weak imo. I already get bored just with the idea of undertaking the gear treadmill 4+ times per major patch, I would much rather just knock it out early and not have to worry about it and spend all the extra time playing all of the other facets that make this game so great. Grinding out gear for a number is not fun.
15:00 Well… the bridge is they locked some TT cards behind some Savage content… so, I have to do that to get the chance at the cards.
I'll tell you how I deal with the gear treadmill. I never get on it to begin with. Haha. It's too much like dailies to me. If I play again for those reason, I'll not be playing that game long.
I'm just coming up on the gear treadmill in XIV. I was halfway through getting ilvl 500 on my main when the next sets dropped. Having come from GW2 with its laterally-focused progression, it was a weird feeling to watch the ceiling rise. While GW2 has introduced new rarities with slightly higher stats over the years, it's been few and far between, and I generally find myself satisfied with being able to say my build on a toon is "done." I've even left some alts on exotics (the original highest tier) for years because ascended gear was only required for a specific kind of content.
While running the treadmill is optional in XIV, the rising level caps and ilvl requirements for duties will always require me to eventually upgrade my gear. However, there are some benefits to that. Something often overlooked is that, at least with XIV's approach, the gear treadmill requires SE to create new glams for the new sets that are released every few months, which are attainable via gameplay. A complaint that a lot of GW2 players have, myself included, is that a lot more resources seem to go into making new fashion-related stuff to go in the cash shop than in the actual game.
Chris is a modern day analogist and philosopher! Love it đ
Sprint when you have the time and energy. I capped for the first time in 5.2 so it was my first savage and i sprinted to BIS. Later I got caught up in wow and i mainly stuck to normal content. Now Im over Shadowlands and Ill be back in 14 full speed
I skip a patch the return rinse n repeat and I love it
Frankly the speed at which 14 trashes gear is what discourages me. If I can get into a piece of content, why should I care? In like 3 months it becomes garbage anyhow, generally. That or the alliance gear is on par with it. I haven't capped my weekly tomes since the expansion launched, because why should I care? Glams? I'll get the dyable version in the next expansion without having to do savage, from uncapped tomes. 1% more damage? I'm a tank why should I care. Etc.
What makes you think they do something for loyalty? Veteran awards havent changed or been updated since day 1.
really great conversation. really great descriptions of the as is in mmo world, chris, and brian. thanks guys.
Lateral gear progression requires solid resource sinks. It's the big argument in the New World community if games don't implement solid resource sinks that remove items from the economy the game just ends once you have BiS gear why go and fetch marginally better new gear when the gear you have suffices for all content in the game. The only thing that keeps MMO's alive that don't have proper sinks in place is expansions and level increases creating this never ending treadmill you speak of.
