The problem with the "content" issue is that when people sub, they feel that they need to keep playing since they paid for a service. When they run into a wall of "not enough" content, they feel jaded because there is nothing that interests them after they paid for something. But in reality, these people need to just move away from the game and come back when something interesting comes by.
Saying that FFXIV doesn't have enough content is incredibly facile, especially when you consider World of Warcraft's current state. Exactly how much content is a video game supposed to have before you start running into staffing, storage, and engine limitations?
FFXIV never had the vibe of being the only video game in the world, and even their creators tell their customers that it's okay to play other things. It's not FFXIV's responsibility to be a person's only source of entertainment. Work through that Steam or GoG library and come back when FFXIV looks more interesting again. Otherwise, complaining about a finite amount of content without offering any solutions is just whining.
Hooty hoo!
What did the wise chocobo say? Hooty Hoo, hoo hoo kweh.
-.-) Somehow I saw this coming yet did absolutely nothing about it…
While I'm not a fan of subscription based games, I guess it's better than the predatory free to play model. I tried GW2 to see if I liked it that but it really wasn't for me. My main gripe about FFXIV is having to rent extra retainers EACH month. If it was a one-time charge… Ok; but this month to month thing is irritating to me. I think you can spend more on monthly retainers than the actual subscription!
I would love to see how the duty support system evolve over the years, who know if eventually they can tune the AI to the point you can do old sync high end content solo with AI or fill spots with AI.
Honestly this reminds me of that one scene in Monty python's life of Brian… "Ok but apart from the msq, the PvP changes and rewards, the new dungeon, the new extreme trial, hildibrand quest, omega quest, Tataru quest, beast tribe questline and adventure plates, what did 6.1 do for us?"
interesting how he talks about stuff like collecting minions/mounts, making glams for gposing, housing, RPing, etc. There's a whole host of "unguided" content that you can do if you choose to seek it out. Contrasted with "guided" content that comes mid way through like relic grinds, Eureka/Bozja, deep dungeons, Ishgardian Restoration, etc where there's a clear goal the game gives you checkpoints and goalposts to work through that feel more videogame-y. But who knows. Who. Who-tee-hoo.
“Or you can take a break from the game” is the biggest true that has ever been trued
but then you end up behind in gear and trying to get mounts etc if you go take a break
I like that the game has a patch cycle with periods where I have more to do and periods I have less to do. In the periods I play less I do other things, like play some games in my backlog, for my static we now do older raids min-ilvl just for fun as we wait for the next savage tire.
I love that there are many things to do in the games but nothing that I feel that I have to do.
Labeling dissent as "haters" wholesale annoys me greatly every time.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but FF14 has the most frequent content drops of any active MMO to date. "How can people complain about lack of content?" I hear you ask. Well, this content has a very short expiration date. And it's also very predictable. I've been away from the game for a couple of months now, but I can already tell what I'm going to do when 6.2 drops because in a sense I've already done it since 2 expansions ago and one day, I might not feel like coming back at all. Of course, there's always a chance that one of the new features knocks it out of the park and has a longer shelf life, we'll see.
This makes me think how after 15+ years of history of MMOs not many are pursuing the mythical "evergreen content".
My worst time with FF14 was immediately following Heavensward. It felt like the only thing to do (because I'd completed most of the ARR content) was to do the raid content after I completed MSQ. Heavensward's MSQ was amazing. The first tier of Alex and 3.1 were… not much.
Since then, I tend to play the .0 release (the big MSQ chunk), and then after MSQ, take it easy until around the X.3 patch once they've really gotten the relic weapon stuff going. By then, they've solidified a lot of the end game grinds, and there's a bunch of stuff to do.
FF14 is just a more chill MMO. The game does quality over quantity. Take it easy, eventually there will be end game grinds that feel good to do, and you won't feel like you're wasting time with stuff like world quests.
I know I have probably got the wrong idea or whatever but Destiny 2 was filled with content then the dcv happened and removed 70%ish of the content in the game would you rather ff14 potentially reach that point where that card is on the table? I know it won’t happen but it’s still a possibility that’s all.
The official forums tend to be on the extremes. The amount of negativity and doomsaying there is mind-boggling. I actually saw someone calling the devs lazy and complaining about the fact that Endwalker had one or two less songs. There are also the fanboys who attack those who have any kind of constructive feedback as well. But for the most part there is a ton of hyperbole on both sides, leaning to the negative from my experience.
Personally, I love the FFXIV. Very few things are required, most of it is optional, but encouraged so you don't get those crappy forced engagement mechanics that you find in WoW. I also play Destiny 2, Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, Fallout and Cyberpunk. There are days I just want to log in, spend a day doing my raids, my roulettes or do some extraneous stuff like mount farming or Gold Saucer. Then there are days I don't feel like logging on and want to play something else and FFXIV let's me do that without fear of missing out. I love it.
If they focused too much on engagement or on one aspect of the community, that's how you end up in the WoW situation where people eventually get burnt out and quit altogether or realize there's nothing to do outside grinding Mythic+ or raids.
I think the player leap into content they haven't tried before is the real crux here. One of the biggest advantages to the lull periods in-between the content cycles for FFXIV is the opportunities to try areas of the game you haven't tried, or never even experienced before.
Case in point, during the most recent Make it Rain event this year, I delved into Chocobo Racing. Last year's Make It Rain, I did Triple Triad (I got well over 320 cards and built up 5 decks for a variety of situations and can now compete in the live tournaments). With the Chocobo Racing, I was honestly shocked with how complex the system was, not just with the races themselves, but with the breeding, and mount customization. I lost myself during this month doing the Chocobo Racing and made roughly 1.2 mil MGP alone almost exclusively doing the races/breeding. I now have a pedigree 9 Chocobo with 4 500 stats (all stats are 4 stars) and can confidently get 1st place in most races. I really enjoy this mini-game and will do this weekly to do my challenges at least. It was fun to discover this nook of content to absorb myself into. It didn't involve combat, it didn't even really incentivize me in terms of giving me anything beyond it was just fun gameplay and complex mechanics that intrigued me.
I totally get everyone is different. But I 100% agree with Quazi here that you should give a college try to the other content that exists in FFXIV to see if it interests you because you may be surprised what pulls you in.
totally right the FF14 community are toxic.. bring up that u want chat boxes they scream go play something else..l bring up mythic+ cry about toxicity.. bring up PVP they'll say its not a pvp game.. they think the game is perfect when many other games do much better on some points.. gw2 open world is better than any mmo and alive.. FF14 open world is dead.
If I comment on an MMO video, it's safe to assume I watched it all the way through. 🙂
Good video.
So, two things it was ultimate seekers not savage that had to wait pretty big difference in player base. Also not 100% true about painting a wall is free in fact can paint cost you 20ish dollars. I get where he was going with the analogy, but always found it a bad analogy
I'm still playing every single day and I've been sucked into doing…SIDEQUESTS. I've discovered so many good stories and they even reward amazing stuff like emotes, glam and titles. Too many people skipped them thinking they're just throwaway XP and I think they're missing out. It's been super enjoyable especially during the down times. I also love making new glam. I think there's still too much content.
its not that there isnt any content, my problem is that a lot of the content is copy and paste material and assets from Final Fantasy XI and blatant copy and paste ideas from older final fantasys.
brand new fresh content appeared the most from Endwalker.
Heavensward is still the best story because it was the most original as possible, a whole lot of nothing new or complicated happens in Stormblood, in Stormblood in general terms, ala mhigo and hingashi and othard get liberated from the empire. But nothing happens that forever changes the story.
Shadowbringers although introduced emet selch, it offered like, nothing to the source and zenos, because it was an isekai.
as for endwalker, i havent finished it yet, but it seems better than the last two expansions so far.
There is a problem that I think you have overlooked, and your ideas honestly will only make worse. Basically, it a case of diminishing returns as the game goes on people complete the objectives you have mentioned. So, they are taken out of the pool of people wanting to complete these items making the overall pool of people doing the event less. On top this people reaching cap much faster as they start out at higher level making anything to do with exp mean absolutely nothing. Which bring up the 2nd part harder more challenging content. While yes is short term it sounds like great thing and I think it a must have, however putting this as a foundation is not good. At end of the day what do people do with fights they don't like? They don't come back to help others, and this leads to issue which has only happen recently there very few party finders for shb/ew (non-high tier) trials or raids and the few that do come up most are duty complete. Now you're going say go discord find people or join fc that center around this and you be correct but also most won't do this. This is compound by SE making Bonja both easier but also harder than eureka. Easier because the average person has completed a relic by now and the grinders have completed all relics. Harder because they made CLL, Delubrum Reginae, and Dalriada progression gates that need to be done, but people do not want to do them if they completed that step. Making finding 1 run a trial heaven forbid if you try for many. Also, when they do get a group its small one which far less fun. So, I agree with both sides there always stuff to do just completing it not as easy as it used to be in past expansions.
There is no content.
Housing? They gave very few people some housing…. Now it's the same that it is always been: bad.
PVP? Not interested since it is boring.
There is not enough content for MOST of the community. There is Savage for the high end, crafting and glamor for the low end, and nothing in the middle.
-They keep making ilvl mistakes. Make Savage HIGHER. Make it MEAN something.
-The 24 man should not be obsolete 2 weeks into the cycle.
-Bring out dungeons with better gear, better LOOKING gear. MORE DUNGEONS.
-I remember 3 dungeons per patch. How about OPTIONAL dungeons? Dungeons that may enhance the story, but have them be, you know, GOOD. Hard. Not casual bullshit that you can ram through.
-World Bosses? How about amazing story-chain fates? Something that grabs you and says YOU NEED TO DO THIS. Rewards that are WORTH IT.
-Speaking of rewards, how about rewards and gear/glamor that LOOKS GOOD. No more frog heads, elephant bodies, and ridiculous looking anime crap… how about some FANTASY in "Final Fantasy?"
We need content. And we need it now. 4 month cycles are bullshit. They had the best year they ever had raking in the cash, hire more people and make stuff.
I'm all for getting off the gear treadmill and I agree gear only matters the the x.4-.5 patch, because all content can be done at minimum ilvl, which is the ilvl of the gear given by the current dungeon.
The problem is, 14 doesn't have end game like gear grind and weapons grinds like 11 did, because on 14 even if you do the ultimate or extreme fight those weapons will be useless 2 to 3 months later….in 11 you grind for them and keep ep for a long time, it makes the game better because you working your ass for something and get to use it for awhile it makes the grind worthwhile. 24 don't got anything like this. It's just dailies or weeklies for upgrades and that's it. 14 just need something to keep players playing for a long time like 11 did. I played 11 for 10yrs and my only break was 2 months and never I felt like I was done. Lol in 14 atm I do feel like I am done and taking a break and went back to 11 because I still got a lot to do there.
I stay in my circle I play everyday 1-3 hours FFXIV helps me escape reality especially these past few years. New content i play finish and go back just hanging and some PVP.
The reason why there "isn't enough content" is simple. Eureka happened. People forget that Exploratory Missions like Eureka and Bozja swallowed up 1 dungeon per patch as well as the entire relic questline. There has been nothing to replace that questline since then, resulting in much less PvE content and the complete absence of a catch up weapon. They NEED to introduce something to fill that void left by the Exploratory Missions taking the traditional catch up weapon or completely separate the relic weapon from the Exploratory Mission.
EDIT:
And no, Bozja doesn't count as it wasn't completely separate from the Resistance Weapons. You NEED to do Bozja and Zadnor to advance the relic weapon, which means that the Resistance Weapons are directly tied into the Exploratory Missions.
Even after 3k hours I still have so much left to do… to the point I don't even have time to play the ff7 remake. I'm barely 12 hours in and I bought it two weeks ago.
There is plenty of content, you just might have to broaden your options. I never thought I'd spend 40- 50 hours in just potd. Or another 70 hours doing maps. 30+ hours doing bozja/zadnor.
I think in 6.2 we're getting round 2 of raids, a new extreme, a new expert dungeon, start of the relic weapon, a Criterion dungeon(waiting for more info on this 😁), more story, updated rival wings, and Island Sanctuaries(waiting for more info as well).
That sounds better than 1 new zone, 1 new 10 boss raid, a few new reputations, and a whole lot of crap you have to grind.
I think that 14 is doing a great job. It could always be better but it could be much worse.
I think that's the reason I can't stop playing. I'm just having alot of fun.
I used to enjoy playing the Sims and building houses. I understand people do that in 14. For those folks I hope they love it! Its not my thing anymore but I don't have to enjoy it to hope someone else does.
I ❤ the roadmap. Of actually knowing roughly whats coming out and about when. I might not be able to tell you what Island Sanctuaries is exactly but I know its coming.
Eh, Brian if I get burnt out you have the right to call out my bs. 😁. I don't want to get as emotional as I was over WoW.
Omg, Brian i want to share macros outside of discord to my friends. I have quite a few ps4/5 friends and I want to help them out so bad!!! They struggle to make macros and I just want to send them my guaranteed 100%.
What time on the first Brian?
People have played Overwatch for years without updates. People love good pvp.
I was a high end player in WoW. I now look at content in a new way. I now ask the most important question first. Is it fun? I never thought there was fun casual content. How stupid I was.
This game has been evolving slowly since Yoshida took the reigns. Not into the game he necessarily wants to make but into a game the fans and company can be proud of.
I'd rather log off than just go through the motions. I don't want to do forced content. Took me 3 months to force myself through the 9.2 campaign. It wasn't that long or hard just the have to do made me not want to do.
I can't forget what I did in 9.0.
I started out Brian by liking the video as always buddy.
I don't do daily activities if I don't want to. I think I have one friendly tribe and not anywhere close to unlocking the arkorsodara. Yet I'm halfway to Ameliance turn in.
I watched it when it aired and it was a good vid.
Hooty hoo good sir.
About to watch this, but I had to click. One of my biggest issues with this game is that it has TOO MUCH content. Every time I login to FFXIV I feel overwhelmed by it all and either end up trolling in Limsa for a few or just logging off.
I would be contrarian, but I feel that game doesn't have enough strictly 8 player content. That being only Trials and Normal raids. I would want to see 8 player dungeons, maybe with split between light parties at some moment, with approach in style of Bozja raids – where party has to do different objectives during raid and not just get to the boss and kill it.
I would also want to see optional missions involving G-Warrior for those who completed Sorrow of Werlyt – I would have loved to play 1-2 extra missions piloting my giant robot.
Zones like Eureka but with approach that would allow players of all levels to get into a party (my biggest gripe with Eureka – I can't find a party for it – everyone either too low level or too high level to go with me) and explore massive zone, maybe with approach to settlements like with Tribe Quests – do certain amount of things you have to do and little settlement will grow, expanding list of services in the zone.
Expand ARR zones a bit, combine cities from two regions into single entities.
Make recovery items more useful.
I guess that's the wishlist I have regarding FFXIV. I am not surre if I ask way too much from the game though.
I think the amount of content is different depending on the player, some of us don't raid, we don't collect minions/glamours or mounts and we don't grind for gear, or relic weapons. For a solo player, there can be a lack of playable content, if you don't want to party up with others. I get it's an mmo but some people either can't or don't want to team up. In the end there is always going to be complaints about content whether it is not enough content, why can't this content be easier, why can't we have better rewards for this event, why can't we have better events…. etc. etc. But ffxiv is a game where you can walk away if you need to. You don't have to login daily and play if you don't want to.
My biggest issue with FF14 is that I don't enjoy the story. I have 1000+ hours in 14 between 1.0 and beyond. I'm the type of gamer that is 99% gameplay focsued. But when I talk about this online I just get mobbed on by people who love the story. I'm sorry but JRPG stories are just not my thing and literally make me cringe. However, I often love the gameplay in them. So I kinda understand why some ppl say there is "no content for them", considering over half of the content is story based. But that's ok, after 13 years I realize I'm just bored of the gameplay on FF14 and that means I need to move on.
I just hit max level after 5 months of casual leveling and still haven’t even finished shadowbringers MSQ. It is really surprising as a new player to hear that people are having this issue because I am overwhelmed with all the stuff there is to do. And honestly my biggest struggle is figuring out what things I want and can do now that I am max lvl. Luckily just joined a new FC to help me figure this out 🙂
