FFXIV: Endwalker Thaumaturge/Black Mage 1 to 90 Leveling Skills Guide

This guide seeks to teach new Black Mages how to Black Mage properly, without getting too deep into optimization. I’ll be showing off and explaining some openers but not delving too much deeper beyond that and general skill usage. Endgame is a long way away and there’s lots to learn along the way. Start slow and work your way up one skill at a time! Then, graduate to more advanced guides.

  1. Yes I did call them "High Fire III" and "High Blizzard III" by accident.
No. I will not be re-rendering it now that I've only realized it post-upload. I have music to listen to.

Reaching out deep! Deep! Deep! Splash Free!

  2. For those who get lost in how many fire IV's to use.

Always cast your fire spells in sets of 3 to be safe. After your 3rd Fire IV you will either finish with Despair (when about to run out of mana) or continue it with Fire I/Paradox.

  3. The quality difference between these latest videos and your ShB videos is staggering. You've clearly found your confidence.

About tanks being bad for not using countdowns. I tried that but too often people will just pull during the countdown. Would love a seven second countdown when doing my normal mode runs on tuesdays but enough people clearly don't care. If you want to practise openerswith prepulls and whatnot then the best place for that is ex trials, that's the game mode where you figure that stuff out.

  4. I find that Aetherial Manipulation benefits tremendously from a mouse-over macro. Here's the one I use:

  5. I just kept doing the ShB rotation + the new stuff/changes but starting in fire really changes the feel a lot. It's faster but it's definitely gonna take a while to learn!

What would you recommend doing when for whatever reason you can't do a full fire phase? For example due to having to move around a lot I don't have Polyglot or instants I'll either abort fire phase with transpose -> umbral souls or if I'm at halfish mana but also astral fire is about to run out I'll cut fire short by casting despair way earlier.

I think that there are so many scenarios where you have to make a quick turn in the middle of your rotation and, personally, this causes me to tilt and I only have a couple of backup plans. But it's never enough because there are so many cogs to make BLM's wheel turn properly.

  6. Jesus Wesk! Not only do you help with understanding jobs and building base rotations, you're also hilarious. Loved watching your videos during Shadowbringers, especially the PLD one. (PLD main, of course) I'm dying to see the other 90 job guides. But, I shall wait patiently, because the ones that are out are gold.

  7. Well, after sage and monk, it'll be nice to relax and enjoy a simple turret mage for sees video length. . . . . oh.

Gotta say, I think sage is still harder to get. I think I've watched that one ten times by now, and I still don't feel like I get it (and not from a lack of you trying to make it make sense). Black mage feels harder to play, and it seems like every new skill nudges everything out of whack again, but I never feel like, wait, what does that do?

It feels sensible, if needing a lot of careful understanding to play at max damage, which feels like the exact player who wants to main BLM. The fact that you can start at level one and slowly build up is probably helpful too.

Except I never want to play leveling roulette as one. Battle leves until I can get to 50/60… roulette it is!

  8. I never got the muscle memory I needed. The class changes so much every 10 levels I just never did anything "optimal". Black mage is like apprenticing for years to be an electrician and they make you a plumber once you're done.

  9. And then after all that, there is the the Commend Rotation, where you throw as many Flare and Fire IV as you can all the time so people who don't know any better are so impressed by your fireworks that you get the vote.

Works more frequently than it should.
