Lemme no what you think of Myth post graphics update ! I love the cheeky little devil x
Pineapple do belong on pizza.
Myth: The game should have more starting points to give new players a chance to play with their friends.
Square Enix: A free story skip without holding the player hostage for months before they get what they wanted at the start, such blasphemy.
Just counter point, you can play with your friends at any point. With level synch, a feature that WoW took for themselves cause it was a good idea, you can join them along for everything that isn't a solo duty even on your max character. I think a bigger issue is the culture of trying to get your friend to play a game and than ignoring them until they reach max. The game already has in place incentives to make you want to do that content with friends, though I do think that it is the part they could expand reward wise as well as advertise more along side the free trial.
I am a pineapple on pizza enjoyer.
If I had the opportunity to think of a way to introduce knew players without the 400+ slog through the story, I'd probably have a series of alternative MSQ quests that give the general information needed for understanding the events of ARR – Shadowbringers,.. and I'd start it off in Old Sharlayan. Imagine being a student or gleaner that is helping to archive and preserve knowledge, thus giving us a reason to understand the story elements from previous expansions without fully engaging with it, and cutscenes provide some narrative. You character starts off at level … hmm. maybe 70,… You're effectively starting at Shadowbringer levels. Then give the player 80 hours to level and get acclimated to mechanics and leveling system, etc. Then they go through Endwalker much the same way as we did, leading into the beginning of Dawntrail.
This is of course just a preliminary suggestion, but of course it has massive holes, I'll admit.
So here's the main issue with doing a story skip like this:
The entirety of FFXIV is based solely around the player's character IS the warrior of light, joining forces with the Scions to deal with the Boss of the expansion.
So unless they introduce a story that at least manages to take care of the "Warrior of Light actually starts off in Old Sharlayan" or at whatever X point that makes the most sense, I'm not sure how they can build the WoLs connect with any of the other Scions without completely altering dialog for that route specifically.
As far as the connection to the Scions, it could be said, being in Old Sharlayan for example, at least the alt WoL would have at least "known" or interacted with the Archons at least, or grew up with them.
But really, I don't know how they would manage it without breaking some lore, or creating side lore. /shrugs
As a fellow Lalafell, I both appreciate the fast talking (love people who don't waste my time) and agree with you on many points. However, this is the first time I've heard disparaging things about Endwalker, I thought it was largely positive?
I think they should find a way from now on to stop locking new content behind msq progress and unintwine a section of multiplayer content from the story. Everything in the game can stay as it is and even the stuff in dawntrail will have to but for the next xpac i would like to see the features like field operations, raid series, lifestyle content, new features and area/ city unlocks disconnected from msq. perhaps you could give new players a big xp boost when they first get the full game which could get a job to max so they can engage with current content even if they aren't caught up on the story. Imagine if as a new player going into dawntrail you start on the msq in ARR but all the while you are trying out the new field operation in tural with your friends where all the content is disconnected enough from the story to not make it seem weird to be there. while you are playing through level synced dungeons you could also be learning the latest savage raid at current and be working on your gear. perhaps make half the content at endgame available to progressing players so there's still incentive to get through the amazing story to play the fully featured endgame.
(Also, on area/city unlock, the final secret areas for each expac would still need to be unlocked through msq completion and norvrandt too of course but most areas and cities could easily be made accessible with their optional dungeons/ old xpac endgame content, this could be useful non story leveling content for players going to current endgame early)
Of course hes a Lala. What else? xD
And a good looking one.
I think i can understand why they're afraid to shake the boat, but you're absolutely right that change is needed.
Frankly, I would do a full level reset, start a MSQ-2 off from post-Endwalker in the New World (with the new story starting us in Old Sharlayan and sending us off in a boat after Scion Storytime).
Yes, full level reset. Condense all the jobs as they are at level 80 down to level 1. Endgame is now level 20. (This allows them plenty of room for new/updated spells/abilities/traits)
This would also allow them to do a major stat crunch, reducing number bloat. Could even eliminate materia bloat.
They could revamp the New Game+ feature to allow players to experience the "first campaign" of the MSQ again.
Unfortunately that would be a major undertaking and shake the entire playerbase to its core. There are a lot of items and monsters and old fights that would need heavy TLC to make sure they aren't totally ruined (especially Ultimates). It would also take a lot of time, which CBU3 seems loathe to spend on anything because if how it affects their release schedule. They very much LOVE their established formula (and i think that has to do with Japanese business culture).
We really do need a segway to get people to current that isn't playing the last 10 years of the game as much as it is good and it does keep the content ever green it's getting too big.
My suggestion be new player experience starts you off on another shard and your soul merges with the Warrior of Light of our cannon and sort of "Echos" you the the past.
