FFXIV Combat is VASTLY Superior to WoW

Final Fantasy’s combat is actually kinda deep and genuinely amazing. Let’s talk about it!

  1. Thanks for the video explaining the difference between WoW and XIV's combat system. I don't play WoW so I cannot say which one is better and which one I would prefer. But, I want to add that XIV also has optimization in their combat system, mainly from the way we weave in OGCDs between every GCD. The 2.5s GCD seems to be designed to allow time for weaving OGCDs. Some jobs even require us to double weave in between GCDs for optimization (e.g. MCH). Some combos have branch which may provide us different buff or inflict enemies with debuff. Knowing when to weave OGCDs, and when to use certain combo path are keys to optimizing damage in XIV. The thing is, the game doesn't punish you too much from not doing the optimized as long as it's a proper combo. As long as you use your OGCDs at proper time and on cooldown, you may still be able to clear Savage contents as long as you are doing the boss mechanics right. I really like this combat system because I can still freely modify the way I weave in OGCDs to my comfort (due to ping, etc) and still be able to accomplish stuffs.

  2. well and then theres these ppl that want to play a pacifist-healer or ice-mage, tanks that keep all their cooldowns for bosses and flame healers when they during die wall to wall pulls.
and these guys that bring lv 1 gear in a lv73 bossfight and wonder why they die to every bit of grp dmg.
There is a fine line between beeing supportive of ppl that don't know better and enabling leaches that don't care for anyone but themselves.

  3. By the time WoW came out, I was already in my 3rd MMORPG. So, I'm no stranger to multiple MMORPGs out there. From my experience, AION v1.0 had combo system just like FFXIV but their GCD was a lot faster. Because of this, the game mechanic revolved around stun or be stunned strategy which limited the play style. FFXIV approached it in a unique way where their battle system derives from tactical tab targeting like in the old FF11 online but at much faster paced. This still allowed dance like rhythm into the fight. Making the fight more spectacular. For example in E12S raid, there's a gather and spread mechanics. At a first glance, it may appear as just stack and spread but if you zoom out, the pattern looks like a flower blooming as players spreads out from a stack. The best way to describe this is like the synchronize swimming.

  4. Great video explaining the combat system in ffxiv. For new players might need to get used to it, but once you are in, it’s a second nature to weave in OGCD (which is called abilities in tooltips) in between 2.5s GCD which btw can be shorten with combat speed stat. Lots of skills/spells in FFXIV has a chain combo. You use first one which enhance the second one which enhance the third one. Don’t worry it will blink to let you know what’s next combo.

It’s true that the devs want you to follow the rotation of the job class as it was designed, but it’s up to the players to optimise that in their own playstyle including designing your own hotbars config, which OGCD to use, which opener to use, which to skip, what is the oh shit button, etc.
