Uptime and Downtime are fairly self explanatory as far as concepts go. Ability to attack the boss, or inability to. But there’s a lot more that goes into it, and a lot of ways it leads back to improving your play at a base level. So while this topic can go really deep, let’s introduce a few concepts to think about.

ABC
Always Be Casting. Even if it's the wrong skill, it's better than no skill.
You didn't actually explained the "updog" term! That was the only reason I watched.
Tbh its great that "ALWAYS. BE. CASTING!" from JoCat is literally a Gif in Discord in default 😀
It was also a nice change with Endwalker that Tank Range Attacks like Tomahawk etc dont break combos anymore (you can even use "Lightning Shot" (GNB Range) when you are in Gnashing Fang) what really helps to keep the GCD rolling^^
Nothing much, what's up with you Wesk?
I'm a RDM lol having a gap closer really helps having a gap opener really helps 😀 hehe but seriously on certain fights say Barbaria can't remember the boss name it was storm's crown that fight was so damny busy I was forgetting which spell i ended on to keep black/white magics balanced LOL
I adore the way monk plays and I'm not the kind of person that thinks it needs a ranged attack (even if it would be useful for niche things like pulling specific enemies out of a group in some places outside of regular duties like PotD or whatever), but I do think it's a pretty bad way to go about things to say that people who say monk doesn't have a ranged option are "almost guaranteed to be bad players". They don't have a ranged option. They do have a disengage option, and for the vast majority of situations it gets the job done where specifically keeping melee uptime on a boss is concerned, but that does not a ranged option make.
I like the video overall (and most everything you make), and think this is a super useful video for newer players, but that was just a really weird way to go about that imo even if I get the point you were going for. I especially think as much since most of the time I see people talk about wanting a ranged monk attack it's because they think a ki blast or something would just be cool, or for niche situations like I mentioned above. Love ya content and hope you keep it up as always, I just don't like the idea of people being assumed bad for acknowledging reality
Great video. I have been considering my Uptime recently as I've been Gunbreaker almost exclusively lately.
Oh god, the aoe spread is such chaos. Ive gotten to the point where, unless im melee and riding the rear with a buncha others, ill just stand still, because its normally easier yo let the lemmings scatter and just keeping the aoe stationary.
Edit: Ive never thought if using SSS for that, i should go monk layer today and give it a try.
Thanks for all you do for the community, Wesk. Awesome and really useful as usual
I feel like uptime and related subjects are actually kind of high level stuff in ffxiv because you need to understand a few key koncepts and be able to plan ahead. It's not like the game tells you that "this is your pixel, there are many like it but this one is yours" but I feel that the planning part is key in this. Planning requires you to know and to understand how to approach fights. For example I see a lot of people just stop casting because they are afraid to die and do not understand that the goal is to do mechanics and damage at the same time, not do one or the other.
I don't think it's an issue of people not understanding that potencies are weaker for melee ranged attacks but that they are preoccupied with not doing wrong (dying etc) instead of trying to do things right. Anxiety would tell us that we risk more with trying to do right than to focus on not doing wrong but it's usually the other way around.
I have decided to learn Black Mage for my next character – and learning to slide-cast on it has been a treat. (your Black Mage Levelling guide has also been good to learning openers.
Great video, thank you!
Classic advice:
– Hit it very hard
– Hit it very fast
– More DoTs
– More DoTs now
…
– Okay stop DoTs
I’m glad you’re back to making this content, you blow all other ffxiv creators away.
Thank you for making this video. I've always loved your job guides, but uptime is where new players typically lose the majority of their dps, no matter how well or poorly they understand their specific dps kit. It can be a difficulty subject to explain clearly and concisely, and you did a wonderful job
As a melee I'm very guilty of many of these pitfalls, I've always been slightly aware of it but never thought about how much I'm missing out with these small mistakes, this video was a big eye opener 🙂
I had no idea you could dodge Storge like that. I am humbled.
there is nothing your videos can teach me at this point
But I still enjoy just watching them
2 huge notes:
1) I love you used p9n because it has 3-4 players taking damage so the healers need to use AOE heals anyway so it's TOTALLY FINE to stand in 1 of the fires if it means you keep uptime.
2) everyone talks about max melee but this leads some people to think they ALWAYS need to be max melee or outside of the boss hitbox. This isn't the case, positionals work inside the hitbox just as much as outside, and sticking with the other DPS means easier to cure 3, healing waltz, baiting enemy AOEs all in 1 spot instead of all over Narnia
I'm glad I saw this I'm a casual player off and on since arr but I've heard uptime a lot and learned lot
