FFXIV: A Mind-Bending Masterpiece

The Twinning is seriously just a flex. Taking those three raid stories and pulling them together is a complete bulls-eye of storytelling.

  1. best thing about the FF storylines is no matter what they story they commit to it as a story. They don't feel the need to front load with exposition so you understand the mechanics of what all is actually going on, no matter how weird it may seem, they'll fill in the details as the story requires. Which really helps maintain the immersion throughout. It feels less like an episodic game, being played level by level, and more like you're in the middle of a book or a movie.

  2. You really should have done these before EW. Imo they provide contextual touches that improve the EW experience.

Anyhow I wonder what that world will do about Endsinger. Take the lopporits and run? Hope Emet and Elidibus never find a way to rejoin 13 so Zodiark stays asleep forever? Because after another rejoining, Venat is probably just done and the next rebirth of WoL will be 9/14, but so will everything else.

  3. Wow, when I did The Twinning, I just thought "oh, it's a cool dungeon." I didn't think it's that deep.

Also Cid and Nero are so hilarious. When Nero said "Don't be some mean to me, I'm someone who thrive with encouragement" and Cid responded "Then you would thrive at somewhere else with I encourage you to fuck off"

    Would never forget this exchange.

  4. So here is my issue with time travel.

So as you may or may not know, there are three types of time travel in fiction. Endwalker (and the Alexander raid series) presents time as the single continuum variety, where you cannot make changes due to time travel, because if you time travel, you were always meant to time travel. Hence why Venat had to subltely lead you to time travel without being obvious about it. That's great, I think single continuum time travel is the best way to go about time travel because it is a super easy thing to fuck up. HOWEVER, that is not the same type of time travel employed by Graha and the Crystal Tower in ShB. So, unless I'm missing something, we have two different types of time travel in FF14, which technically shouldnt be possible. The Crystal Tower scenario uses the infinite alternatives time travel scenario.

  5. I'm ashamed to say I was in such a rush to catch up and finish ShB to get to EW that I ran through the Twinning without taking the time to examine the lore behind it. I'm glad to have the chance to truly appreciate it now. They've really done a good job with the story.

  6. One way of thinking about it that I felt tracked pretty well- When we destroy the Tycoon in the twinning's basement, we're doing a hard disconnect on the tower (and our G'raha) from their previous future timeline.
Something that I think ties to that, is during the jump pad ride down there, there is a slightly disjointed WoL copy visible when you move your camera around on the green swirly background.
I think that kind hints that that part of the tower is out of synch now with the prime timeline.

  7. There is actually no time-travel related issues. In the concept of Block Universe (eternalism) with the Many-Worlds Interpretation, ultimately, everything is already exists. There is no past or future, or present. There is only space with matter in it in all possible variations of its states and dispositions. The "flow of time" is only a "memorized" experience of traversing that ever existing reality. But not all trajectories of traversing are equally possible or inevitable. There are chances to what trajectories have more chances to happen. There is no time as some kind of force of nature or "entity". You can't disrupt any "flows" by meddling with another "time" or space. Raha story is already experienced by him and can't be deleted or altered. That is the Many-World Interpretation part.

Raha has just jumped to another part of reality and, by meddling with it, redistributed the chances of the Source to go to another, more preferable, traversing trajectory through this ever present space-time.

  8. So, with the existence of alternate timelines, there must be one where Ascians succeed with the rejoinings and have their result. I'd be kind of interested in seeing what that looks like.

  9. Thank you so much for making this video. Firstly, I love how happy you get about the lore for ffxiv, you never seem scared to speculate because you always are content with the devs' results and that's awesome. Secondly, I had no idea about these references. I knew the main story because I played through it all, but I hadn't touched omega and Alexander. I knew that we died, but i didnt connect it's importance to the world at large. I had basically forgotten how gorgeous this piece of world building was because I was too busy with the gorgeous spectacle and loving lyna and graha and the whole first. There really is something for everybody in ffxiv.

  10. It's a bigger wiplash with Endwalker. The WoL dying in the first place was not the "original timeline", it was destiny snapping back into a perfect loop to become what it was suposed to be, otherwise a certain event in Endwalker would cause a massive time paradox.

  11. Alot of people that are into 14 seem to have never tried any of the single player final fantasy games, a bit sad really i wish theyd give them a chance. Well thats just me speaking as a way bigger fan of those games compared to any online game.

  12. Wait, have you done the previous alliance raids? Or is it just the normal raids? I don't remember seeing any vids about the former yet (aside from crystal tower ofc).🤔
The new raid in 6.1 is alliance, while everything mentioned here (Omega, Alexander) is normal.

  13. I can imagine someone asking about the subtleties brought by the combinations of themes and story implications and Soken just saying "I had some empty cups and I just wanted to make a banger :D"

  14. You know, we COULD go to the future timeline and save it. We have everything we need. We can't prevent the Eighth Umbral Calamity, but we can go there, kill Zodiark, and bring Meteion WITH US to broadcast her new emotions and new answers to her sisters in that timeline. In so doing, we'd also show the Ascians (and the still living Fandaniel) all that we know and there would be no need for further rejoinings. It's a bit of a retread of Endwalker, but done right it COULD be the last expansion in the game in about a decade.

Hydalaen confirms that there are multiple timelines that she can see (I suspect through Alexander?) and that the timeline CONVERGED with the one where you went back to Elpis, since that was the key all along. In any timeline where you did not survive to reach Elpis, the world ended one way or another. This is indeed the best of all possible worlds.

  16. It's really easy to miss until a second playthrough, but Biggs III wears the same sunglasses as, and styles his hair the same way as, Nero. I love the implication there that by joining the Ironworks, Nero eventually does in fact become as famous and respected as he always wanted to be.
