Another day of tank job balance in FFXIV being absolutely awful as Warrior & Paladin mains swap to Dark Knight & Gunbreaker in 6.2 for the superior DPS.
It’s been over 5 years now and Square Enix still fail to design a system for tanks that is unified in stats, gear, and overall design.

I agree with this entire video. I forgot about the DPS accessory days until you brought it back up (I've taken multiple breaks over the years) but, now I do remember them. it's been uh, quite the ride in XIV as a tank to say the least.
yes yes, I am literally nodding while watching this video.
not being able to use Tenacity always felt bad to me. I remember how hyped I was, when I read the description for Tenacity on Stormblood release.. only to realize that it was basically as useless as parry.. smh
it currently feels to me like SE is not only simplifying the tanks, but to cater more towards their “roleplaying aesthetic”, eg Pala the glamorous boy, warrior the selfhealing beast etc. that’s also what you hear most peeps atm praising.
oh look how shiny Pala actions are, look I can solo a dungeon as warrrior.
when they could actually pay attention to what the jobs really need.
the new change to auto Crit/DH is also really lazy imo, they should have gotten rid of those guaranteed hits, but now it looks like there will only be more of them.
You and I have had this same discussion several times over the years. Square just cannot understand that the players are playing differently than what they design. They test fights in what is essentially God mode where tanks sit around and absorb the big hits while the dps go feral. I'm sure they've gotten better at fight testing than that more recently, but as far as tank and healer balance, I'm willing to think they still use older testing methods.
90, if not 99% of the tank issues would be easily remedied if they gave players a ptr, or some major way for people to contribute towards the next balance patch.
The haphazard handling of tuning and balance is what's keeping me from raiding. Knowing the hours upon hours needed to pour into pulls just to make absurd checks with designs that feel hostile to progression.
I don't know who is in charge of role, class and overall balance. It could be a single person, groups, a team, or the whole development crew. Either way they have some very odd decisions at times. They know how to balance DPS for the most part depending on much damage they are doing and what kind of group buffs or lack thereof the class has. When it comes to healers they stumble and when it comes to tanks they trip over themselves.
The tank that has been developed the best so far? Warrior. Its gotten the lions share of developer attention in how its kit works and performs. Gunbreaker has its issues but between the four tanks its probably the best overall designed of the tanks. You can see where they are going with Paladin but it always falls short due to "purpose and lore" or some out of play nonesense. Dark Knight is a mess thats just being held up just because of its DPS and it needs an overall workover.
You can cut all four tanks into basically 2 classes; DPS/Magic Damage Reducers (DRK/GNB) and Lower-DPS/Shielders (PLD/WAR). In the end all tank buster mechanics are viable on all classes some a little but easier on others but still viable. Where S-E trrips up is where they run into PLD/WAR purpose and lore and they lower their personal DPS because (drum role please) "utility". A skill thats on a 90s cooldown that protects a little bit of damage IS NOT worth a 5-10% reduction in damage especially when its on raid content. I don't care about dungeons or even Extreme but when it comes to Savage and Ultimate its not an acceptable decision.
Stat wise I also completely agree and have been saying it since mid ARR that S-E doesn't understand tank stats. Parry was Trash and I don't use that term lightly and was replaced by Tenacity which in theory was a good change but they never went the distance in weighting it so that it was a desirable stat only a less trashy version; think recycle bin instead of garbage. Piety has almost the same problem but at least the healers know what they are getting out of it. Get just enough Piety for consistent MP return and then hard avoid getting any more of it. It doesn't help that S-E constantly thinks that the next item level patch will be the patch that will make Tenacity the new tank think and they cram it down our throats on what feels like 50% of the equipment. DH and Crit and even Det/SKS provide much better consistent performance even with one or two melds than ANY meld of TEN.
Tank Rotation Paladin has the worst of it I agree, its a very rigid rotation where its only flexibility. I see where they are trying to go with it but compared to the other tanks where their quality of life has them on much smaller overall rotations it just makes Paladin feel less rewarding when you are doing more work and keeping track of a rotation but not getting the return from it.
I haven't played in a year but I love Paladin and playing it but is it that bad overall or is this aimed more at the highest tiers of play?
One of the great things about FFXIV is that if your job is not doing hot anymore just switch jobs as needed if you have them all leveled up and then practice your rotations if its a lesser played class. BUT that shouldn't be the ultimate answer to this, it should be that the FFXIV team needs to rebalance the classic tanks. But as we know this harder due to them having a MUCH smaller team than say WOW and they don't have a PTR. I really hope they can make Paladin and Warriors end game worthy at some point.
Honestly one the biggest graps about pld at the moment is that pld holy spells are not affected by skill speed but instead affect by spell and which make pld rotation feel chucky since you have to skip some atonements procs to line FOF with your rotation. Also Paladin have least 3 useless skills that barely or never get most of the time. (Cover, Shield Bash, and Clemency) Also divide veil not working on paladin is just a dumb design decision despite WAR literally do the same thing without being heal. Overall great video man just really hope they fix pld in the future.
I hadd disagree on paladin routation i love the routation and at 2.42 gcd you dont need to drop the atonement at all
Several problems with a video:
1. 0:30 Graph don't start from 0 and don't end on, say, 100. This in effect makes perceived difference much, much bigger than it actually is. When ACTUAL difference is just a few percent max, if even that. (3,3% between mediantop GNB and WAR right at this moment)
2. What is a point of talking about ancient ARR stuff? There was no balance anyway, not even in general gameplay. Remember how long it took to clear raids those old days? Months
3. In exchange for slight difference in dps WAR has selfhealing like no other tank. It helps in dungeons, it helps in raids.
4. Point about "nobody uses tenacity therefore tank design is shit" is wholly wrong. Every class has a one or two "dump" stats. Dragoons and reapers with skill speed, healers with piety, etc. Why? Because if SE would remove it our BIS compilation would cease to exsist. Imagine if ALL tank gear would have crit and DH, and only those 2. Wouldn't it be "fun"? You need "bad" stats to differentiate one gear item from another, because it gives you some target to strife for.
I saw Xeno rage like that live. He was pissed because they kept dying to DPS check on door boss but soon as he (and only he) swapped from WAR to GNB, they cleared it, obviously denoting WAR damage wasn't enough to clear it. So will SE buff lower tier tanks or nerf DPS requirements? Hmm…
The problem with PLD it's not just damage but the gameplay aspect feel very outdated for me, spamming 1 button spell feels boring, skills like cover are so useless, shield bash been a weaponskill and not a ability, the way that divine veil works to activate, these are some stuffs that I want SE change in the future so pld will be my favorite again
I dunno if it's a pride thing or not but it feels like it
Tenacity is great since it makes you tankier thus letting your healer dps more lol.
