  1. About growth tree, I'm torn on it, I would have loved to see something similar to DMCs skill system or Tales of Arise, where you unlock stuff and choose what to use. Although in DMC you have to use everything you have to keep getting SSSs

  2. Personally, I'm not big on graphics. But I often imagine what if FF14 had the same graphics as FF7 Remake or FF15 or FF16. Or just cinematic quality in general.

  3. Sakaguchi was the Dev along with Tabata (Lead for FF3,FF11 and FF14 1.0) that fought with the higher ups at Sqauresoft to ensure that Final Fantasy 11 retained it's mainline series entry branding (the alternative was to call it FF Online) the compromise made was that it would be called FF11 Online which is why FFXIV is also called FF14 Online in its logo, and if it wasn't for Sakaguchi and Tabata ARR would not have been possible because FF11 wouldn't have secured the mainline entry branding that would eventually carry over into FF14. And FF11 may or may not have started Development due to Sakaguchi getting obsessed with Everquest and other MMOs lol.

Also Matsuno was originally hired by Square because Matsuno impressed Sakaguchi with the games Matsuno developed/wrote for (Matsuno handled the plot of the games while also being the lead Dev overseeing them) at game company Quest, such as Ogre Battle and Tactics Ogre Let us Cling Together. Sakaguchi hired Matsuno because he wanted to bring those kinds of ideas to the FF franchise. This eventually led to Square buying out Quest after making FF Tactics and that's when most of the Devs who would eventually work on FF14 would be hired by Square (minus those who were hired with Matsuno earlier/were grouped into his Dev Team from within Square for FFT). This led to Matsuno being chosen by Sakaguchi to helm FF12 with his team (he had Sakaguchi's utmost confidence). While unfortunately Matsuno never got to finish helming FF12 due to falling ill he left his mark on the franchise before departing Square Enix (and subsequently hired back on a contract basis for the PSP remake of Tactics Ogre and his collabs as writer with the XIV dev team).

IF Matsuno was never hired at Square due to Ogre Battle leading into Tactics Ogre we never would have gotten Viera (which debuted in FF12), we wouldn't have had the UI for FFXIV (developed by a FFT veteran Dev Minagawa-san), the Team Matsuno Dev team members wouldn't have been able to work on ARR or HW and then have a number of them break off after HW wrapped to found a new team under Yoshida to develop FFXVI. To say nothing of the quests in XIV like Return to Ivalice and Bozja. Square was very fortunate in who it hired/had on staff not just for FF1 and FF3 but FFT as well and we wouldn't be enjoying the FF MMOs the way they are today if none of those things turned out the way they did. There is a reason Yoshida-san enjoys working with Matsuno and a reason why he keeps FF11 up and running. He's very aware of those who came before who set the stage for what has become his life's work.

Also one minor correction Matsuno did not write NieR crossover that was Yoko Taro who developed NieR and Drakengard, Matsuno's writing credits for XIV include Return to Ivalice and Bozja which pertain to the Eorzean versions of the cities and locations and races first featured in FF12. And yea I would be unbelievably hype if Sakaguchi and Matsuno got to work together again alongside Yoshida, it would feel like some sense/part of the old Squaresoft finally coming home after so long and getting it's shine on just like the Team Matsuno Devs got to experience after finally hitting it big with FF14, as they did a lot of non-FF side games for SE post FF12 and they hung in there long enough that they're now getting the recognition they deserve and another shot at a mainline FF entry on their own terms (FFXVI). As a long time fan of theirs I couldn't be more happier for all of them.

Edit: Loving your videos btw keep up the good work, hope you and yours stay sharp and keep safe out there.

  4. This interview is so amazing and we ended up getting some amazing info on FF16. Two absolute legends just talking about their love for video games! The fact that Sakaguchi is loving FFXIV is so amazing and I can't imagine how happy Yoshida must feel about it.

  6. At this rate, I'm thinking a Fall 2022 release for FF16 seems like a good call. YoshiP said he didn't really want to show the game or even talk much about it until the game was basically playable, so a Fall 2022 release and YoshiP's comments would line up well with a full reveal and new trailer at E3 2022 in the summer just a few months ahead of release. That would even leave enough time for a demo/trial release after E3.

  7. Ah yeah, I remember that uh, it was either 2 live letters ago or the 14 hour stream, but Yoko Taro was present on one of those and was trying to get Yoshida to slip up some info on XVI, before he asked if he could help out with the mainstory or voice something. Iirc Yoshi-P then replied to him that just last week they finished recording the last few voicelines for the game and that the main scenario was actually done quite a long time ago, which made Yoko-san sadge,
