FF14 New Player after 15 years of WoW – Becoming a DRAGOON and trying the Gladiator – Day 6

FF14 First Impressions:
I’ve played WoW for over 15 years but given the state of WoW right now and the lack of content, I’m trying FFXIV for the first time and documenting my journey throughout the game.

Throughout I will be comparing FFXIV to WoW and referencing the differences between the two. Obviously, I do have some bias, but I will try and keep an open mind all the way. As always these are just my thoughts and opinions.

Also if you have any tips for new players in FFXIV please let me as I’m probably making a lot of mistakes.

  1. Loving the videos. I have decided to come back to FFXIV. Started off a couple years ago, but WoW Legion was pretty good for me, so I didn't get far here. But WoW isn't that fun anymore and I can't wait to get back into FFXIV.

  2. make sure to do Dark knight you thought dragoon was good, Dark knight is nothing but feels. Its class quests are special in the fact it mentions what has happen to you during the main quests

  3. As a long time player, I’m digging your video journey though your early days in the game. It really reminds me of my first few days of the game back when I started in the ARR alpha builds. You are in for a super awesome journey.

The only thing getting to me is the UI setting, which are mostly default. There is a epic ton amount of UI options which in WoW terms, is like bartender, arkinventory, bongs, and stuff built into the game. I understand not messing with it on your game sessions. There is just SO much awesome stuff to see for the first time they the game.

Again, thank your for sharing your journey and thoughts. Welcome to the best gaming family on the planet.

  4. If you decide to play a healer make sure to go into the UI layout editor and drag your party list box down beside your action bars on the left between the chat box. Also..you can resize eat hotbar in the editor by tapping CTRL and HOme keys together. I've seen WoW players also make their UI look a bit more like their old WoW layouts so that's somethin to try as well.

  5. Just binged watching your ff14 vids and welcome to ff14! I don't know of anyone has told you this but you can level your Chocobo to be a Tank, Healer or DPS. You can raise them to max on one and then level them again to the other roles. To do so you just have to set their stance to either healing, attacker or the shield

  6. I find myself looking forward to each new video more and more. FFXIV has so much to offer and such a wonderful community. I love watching these videos since they offer a new viewpoint of the game from the eyes of an MMO Vet. Its probably been said but the event for that car is coming back this year. And it costs MGP to buy it. So make sure you save up for it.

  7. One thing that is pretty much a rule in FF14 is almost everything starts slow and later on pickup the pace. I have paladin, scholar, monk and redmage on max level and each class and their quests started pretty basic, but got a lot better as time went on.

It's probably the devs trying to easy people in, specially with having so much in the game already. So rule of thumb, you'll start seeing what your class will really be around lvl 40.

  8. Hi! Glad youre liking the game. I am newish myself, so its cool seeing other's opinions.

I never discovered the retainer thing till after I beat the base game, but its super useful, so I would keep up on it. On that topic, I'd check out the market board for awesome glamour items.

  10. Have you visited the achievement shop NPC in Gridania yet? The more achievements you get done the more currency he gives you to buy different items like mounts or minions.

  11. This brings back wonderful memories of when I jumped in FF14. I remember having a difficult time connecting with players in WOW. In FF14 I’ve played on and off since 2.0 and over the course of 6 years I have consistently had a circle of friends I play with and chat casually. This has become my safe place. I’m glad to see you are enjoying playing the content and even connecting with the community.

  12. I spent about 800 hours going through the MSQ while constantly getting sidetracked by leveling different jobs and doing unlocks. I got halfway through SB before having to take a break for a few months. Came back because of all of the hype and finished SB this week and it was amazing. Now I can go back to focusing on everything non-MSQ related, so I expect to spend thousands of hours experiencing everything there is to offer.

  13. Great video, I will Say i have played Wow for 15 years also and just started to play FF. my experience was MUCH different from yours. At level 2 logged off and the next day i came back i zone in and Boom i was in Jail, that's right i said in jail lol. I was trying to be funny with my sir name and it apparently was not ok, so i spent 1-2hrs in jail and met a GM had a convo with them. I actually though the experience as a former wow player was really cool and the way that a GM talks to you when you did something wrong is like a prison guard in the Medieval times with you in a jail cell. I am loving the game and love the fact that I can play 1 toon and be so invested in my toon (only level 15 on my first role).

  14. I’ve recently returned to FF14 after playing Ff14 back in 2017 but I quit it coz couldn’t get my friends to move from wow so I ended playing legion since I’ve returned I don’t half regret it even the MSQ is entertaining and it sucks you in for hours time flies

  15. Well Coerthas isn't Ishgard
You can actually see Ishgard from the map where you unlocked Dragoon but you won't be able to go in before end of ARR, starts of Heavensward
Finally being able to go into Ishgard was something I've waited so much when I was discovering the game like you best city so far

  16. Loving the videos! Glad you're having fun! I've played the game almost every day for 10 years and I have still not done everything that's available in the game. I've played MMOs for all my gaming life and this is the only game I've never got bored of. You'll really love what the expansions have to offer, WAY better experience than ARR. Once data center travel arrives, I will come give you a visit 🙂

  17. About burning out from the main scenario quests: The MSQs alone will take over 300 hours to complete. And those are 300 hours of well-written quality content. About burning out from other things? I have 1300 hours of play, I may have used like 30~40 hours of those in grinding content (Relic Weapons), and the rest has been just me discovering new things, new content, new side stories. And I haven't even unlocked some stuff, I have unlocked like 40% of the jobs and finished about 15% percent of them by reaching level 80 and doing all the quests, and they all have their own story arcs (some are amazingly well written and executed), and their own playstyle. Dungeons? Didn't even unlock them all yet. Raids? Unlocked most, haven't tried many of them yet. Hunting logs? Fishing? Crafting? Gathering? Sightseeing? Glamouring? Housing? Just scratched the surface. If I don't know what to do in the game, it's because there's still so much stuff to try that I just can't pick what to go for next. I'm blissfully swimming through this game.

  18. The Regalia Car was a limited time event, part of a ff15 crossover event. I got lucky and managed to get 5 of them on my "main" characters. Not sure if they will ever do the event again, kind of hope so. Though it is nice to have something that is fairly uncommon, it also isn't fair for new players if they will never get the chance to get one. There are a few crossovers that I know of, most of them are ongoing or seasonal.

Don't rush to get through things in FF14. YoshiP has even made the comment that he thinks it is fine for players to leave the game for something else for a while, then come back. That way you don't burn out on the game and quit permanently.

Oh, and on Chocobos, you can change their color as well.

  19. The duty finder is a great way to level extra classes. Using the party finder is a great addition to gathering a party for specific quest if you want to grind for items or experience. It might be a little overwhelming at first but once you figure it out it’ll change your world. Thank you for the content Marty. Looking forward to the next video

  20. You should head to Limsa and try the Arcanist. It’s unique in that once you hit 30 you get 2 advanced classes, the Scholar (healer) and Summoner (dps). Because they share a base class they level at the same time.

  21. Just stumbled on your videos today. As a veteran player of 10+ years, nothing thrills me more than seeing a new adventurer setting out on their journey. Not sure if you've considered it, but I'd love to see your reactions to the FFXIV trailers. There are 6 main trailers which act as intros to the content you will unlock; Final Fantasy XIV 1.0, FFXIV A Realm Reborn (also known as the End of an Era trailer), Heavensward, Stormblood, Shadowbringers, Endwalker. You should be able to watch the first two spoiler-free, the others are for expansions. Also, if you need any questions answered in regards to the game, give me a shout! ^^

  23. Some other people have probably gone over this, but chocobo companions will grow naturally to rank 10, and that will give you enough points to completely fill one of the skill trees for the combat types they have. Whichever one you fill completely FIRST will give you a barding (I personally like the Dragoon one from the dps tree the best) but you should probably go look them up to see which one you'd want.

You can reset their skills with a… Reagan Pepper, I think? That you can get for Allied Seals from your Grand Company, so you can mess with what skills they have at any time if you're willing to get the seals for that.

You can also get them to rank 20, but you have to feed them a Thavnairian Onion every single extra rank you level them, and those are only acquirable via a couple of 1 time quests or by gardening, which basically means buying them off the marketboard or spending weeks learning gardening and trying to grow them. Rank 20 will let you have literally all of the skills, and all of the bardings, though.

A lot of people don't really make use of the chocobos, they're not exactly necessary, but I managed to get mine to 20 (slowly over many years lol) and use mine all the time when I'm doing solo content in the open world or if I'm farming FATEs for seals or whatever other reason. My birb has saved my butt so many times it's not even funny. lmao

Really though, it's like most of the systems outside of the actual Main Scenario; not for everyone but really rewarding if you're interested in it.

(You also get a chocobo suit for getting your chocobo to rank 10 as an achievement reward, and there's a little head piece barding you can get for training other peoples' chocobos in stables. You can also train your chocobo in a stable or feed them color fruits to change what color they are, but you have to leave them in the stable for like 6 hours for the color change to take effect, and you can't have them with you in combat or access the saddlebags while they're in there.)

  24. My headcanon when I started the game was somewhat immersive, going through the MSQ made me feel like I should have a secondary job, and I was heavily influenced by the limsa storyline / rogue storyline when I'm roleplaying, so I kept 2 faces of appearances on my character:
My 'light' job – Arcanist/ Scholar / Summoner , Gladiator / Paladin. Straightforward jobs.
My 'dark' job – Rogue, which then becomes ninja. That's my true job when I play seriously which is focused on killing things and taking matters into my own hands, but also needed stealth for my own purposes.

Little did I know, the MSQ's direction did wonders to my RP headcanon, and it felt great to have ninja leveled up for that reason.

  25. My last mmo was ESO and I'm playing HOTS since there is no mmo that convinces me to play and I was thinking many times to try this game, but the only thing that is making me not do it is New World. I don't want to start a game and then leave it in a few months. When I see FFXIV I see a very interesting game but is impossible to don't see that is something old. All that skills in the front bar and the movement… is kinda old. New mmos you can roll, you have a sight point and only 5 skills with an ultimate if not less like New World. Also the pvp is kinda bad in FFXIV. But if New World is not good I think I will try FFXIV.

  26. Per your comment on trying out Tank/Healer (9:25)
If you wanna try out some other stuff and eventually move into Healer, you should try the 'Arcanist' class… it starts out as a DPS but when you hit lv30, it becomes two jobs – the Scholar and the Summoner. So not only are you getting to try out healer, you are leveling two jobs at the same time. 🙂
